I lived in Tyler Tx for a couple of years 1995-1997. I work at UT HEALTH CARE in the ICU Department. I have awesome memories of Tyler, my co workers/friends, trips to the zoo, (is it still free admission?) Big ol pot of slug bugs (crawdads), Waffle House, Churches Chicken and good hot tacos. I rented a 2bed/2bath house 350.00 on Vernon Ave. I would love to move back to Tyler, maybe some day. I am from California, but Texas has always held my heart. My Daddy was born and raised in Denison, TX, so it was bred into me. I enjoyed your channel about Tyler. It brought back lots of good times.
A couple of extras Tyler is a very closed community I moved from West Texas, known for being open and friendly, NOT TYLER I’ve been here 40 years and am still considered a new comer. There is also a true CLASS system, one in particular “old money vs new money Also, the streets literally roll up at 9pm-Tyler was dry up until a few years ago Those things being said, it’s a nice, small city. I’m not sure about the current population but whatever it is, the same amount of people come into town everyday for work, etc. Therefore, there is a dramatic drop in traffic during school holidays and such. There has been a significant Jewish population for many years and recently a Muslim and others. Great hospitals and superb medical, University of Texas campus, Tyler Jr. College and new Nursing School. A good family town and family and Church activities!
You made it sound like we have three months of temperatures over 100 degrees. We actually have 3 months in which we MIGHT have temps over 100. 2023 saw 26 days over 100 degrees and 2022 saw only 10 days over 100. I have been here 10 years and although I have heard it can be cold to newcomers I have never experienced it. When my California Cousin came for a visit she couldn’t believe how friendly strangers on the street and in stores were to her. I am not big on church but most of my friends here are, no one has an issue with me not attending church. Yes, Tyler tends to be politically conservative. Home prices are high everywhere and Tyler is not exceptional in their prices.
People leave Tyler because there are no jobs. I have been thinking about moving down there as I am 15 years away from retirement, but the home prices are crazy high. I'm glad I have some land down there. That area you showed with $300 a month HOA is ridiculous! In the big city where I live, the HOA is not that high!!! However, you get the high crime with the big city life. The sound of gunshots in the big city has almost become the norm, sadly.
100% TRUE, no work mandates relocate to live. I looked at the weather data there, LOL, 3 months MISERABLE, Add two months for oppressive more time and add two more months general Humid thickness. Its actually too humid 7-8 months. High suggest visit in June or July and you’ll ponder can you handle the thick air? That alone will be hard to rationalize .
I live in the Tyler area and My HOA is $500 a year and there are nice subdivisions that don’t have an HOA and thus no fees. Regarding the weather 2023 had 26 days over 100 and 2022 had 10 days over 100. The heat is hot but seems it is being exaggerated. The humidity is a reality, so we do spend more time in in the air conditioning those months.

70’s with Fall color? Sounds absolutely miserable. No big snows after Christmas? There goes the waistline. I am used to shoveling snow to slim down after the holidays. As a Christian Conservative, the more non christian people there are the more ripe they are for the “harvest.”’So not only does your home increase in value, but so do your opportunities to “witness” to the love and mercy of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Tyler has done well by us. However, we have noticed it getting more crowded in the last few years. We will be leaving Tyler for Utah for the dryer weather.
Born and raised in tyler. Spent 3 years not living here after college, finally moving away again this week for good. Tyler is great if you have children, a very good job, and have a very specific political and religious viewpoint. It severely lacks 3rd spaces, is largely racially divided by literal train tracks, and does not have the infrastructure for the current growing population. It’s a very hard place to live as a young person, and even harder as a secular person. If you make 6 figures, like a small town feel with city amenities, and go to church every Sunday, it’s the town for you.
I like living in Longview Texas which is approximately 40 miles from Tyler Texas. But I like the hospitals they have in Tyler much better than Longview.
Everything you mentioned will be found in most Texas towns and city’s . Fire ants, hot, cold, bugs,snakes, property tax, lack of true seasons, high home prices ???? This is ALL of Texas, you need to travel more.

I'd like to tell those transplants from places like California (and other parts of the West-Coast), as well as Chicago, Colorado and the North-East, our reservation of ya'll moving here isn't from a personal dislike towards you, but, instead, it's from what most of the folks from these states had "unintentionally" (or not) brought to this state. What do I mean? Politics and a choice to drive up our cost of living (which has forced our housing market to begin to climb as it currently is). I get it, compared with your previous state, the Texas housing market isn't as out of control as is most west-coast, Chicago and east-coast real estate markets. When you choose to bid high for a property, just remember that choice will drive up the Texas housing market. I'm not suggesting to bid low. Just bid fairly. As you see, a typical (2100 square feet) home in Texas doesn't cost in the millions. So, please don't bid on a property thinking that you are back in your previous state. That will hurt us all. For example, our county politicians (not tax assessor offices) determine our property taxes. When a home is bought at a certain cost, all other "like" homes will be adjusted to reflect the new "market value" of our homes. The result is a housing market that begins to look like the housing marker where you came from. Once that happens, Texas will not have its appeal that led you to move here in the first place. Please don't drive up our housing market. It happened to Austin in the past several years. Now Austin, Texas looks pretty much like LA or San Francisco. In Austin, Texas the transplants brought their politics as well as desire to drive up the cost of living in that city. Will Tyler someday be like Austin? I hope not! Please, please don't do this to Texas!

When covid came on we dutifully wore masks and competed for who had the best black lives matter yard sign. It was all well intentioned love thy neighbor stuff but the native blue collar washingtonians were soon outnumbered 3 to 1 with California transplants topping the list of newbies with money. Now $ 1 million might buy an older 1200 square foot home that needs work. P poor planning. But then we sold out for all that equity and inclusion. Especially equity in home values.
Compared to Illinois, taxes are super low. RE taxes are roughly half 4.25% of value is the norm in Illinois. Chicago's sales tax is 10.25%. The Income tax is 6.95% for corporations and 4.95% for individuals. WInters in Chicago are brutal, think -20F with 20mph winds and a foot of snow. Texas sounds like a paradise.
Tyler is charming in many ways. Cool little places to eat and grab a coffee that aren’t corporate. The Grove is a cool place. Vast shopping but very small stores so variety is limited. Downside The humidity is disgusting. Moved here a year ago from Collin County to look to buy land nearby because my hometown is overrun. We will be leaving very soon. It’s too hot and the storms are unpredictable and frequent. Traffic is terrible and people here drive like they are beginners, most are since they are college age. Not enough nice apartments and the one we chose was infested with roaches. Many fast food restaurants are filthy and lacking customer service.

I went to UT Tyler. But later moved to DFW for more job opportunities and much higher pay. Now as I’ve gotten a little older, I’m moving back to East Texas… to Gilmer.
Im guessing from the accent your not from round here...are ya, 1st off, we did NOT just have a record breaking summer, yes temps hit 100+ throughout summer i've only seen it over 60 consecutive days twice, once was 1980. This isn't the desert... As far as rainfall, North and East TX get alot, look at a topographical map, thats the green part. Not sure why your picking on Tyler. Also, isn't the population increasing... yes, it is.

I have lived in Tyler since 1971. The seasons are different every year. Summer lasts from late May until mid-late September, with the hottest being late June til late August with temps usually up to 95+. Some years there may be 30+ days over 100. But the difference between 95 and 105 is very negligible. It is freaking hot. Your AC will be running a lot. It is late July now and it has rained about 10 times this month. You never know from year to year. Fall lasts until after Christmas normally, but sometimes it gets cold early. Winter usually lasts from January until late March, but sometimes later. Most years there is only a light dusting of snow, but we had had up to 12” at one time. Spring lasts about a month where it is really comfortable. The saying about Texas weather is true: if you don’t like it right now, wait 5 minutes. The weathermen are wrong 90% of the time, so you just have to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. The part about religion is not true. No body cares if you go to church or not. Yes there are mosquitoes and bugs. Snakes are pretty scarce in town, but they do appear occasionally. Copperheads are the most common, and yes they can climb trees and walls. There are raccoons, possums, and an occasional coyote in town, but they normally stay hidden during the day. There are definitely social classes here, but there are everywhere. The public schools are not that good, but there are several private schools that are very good.

Considering the high amount of people that are Christians in the area you will find a good amount of people that disagree with your lifestyle. However that doesn't mean they will be rude or mistreat you. You will have a harder time fitting in based on politics rather than your lifestyle.

There’s not a lot here in Tyler, good paying jobs are hard to get, prices of things are still better than a lot of places but still not good
