Very interesting. As somebody putting up long hair on a regular basis, I'd suspect that throughout the period covered there were wooden hairpins being used that haven't left any archaeological trace. Cheap, easy to make with a bit of whittling, and most effective at actually keeping hair in place because of the slightly rough texture.
