Why tf a french director would be making a musical about a stupid situation about the horrors of mexican narco?? The movie shows an extreme lack of investigation about the latino narco problem. Its like if a mexican director making a movie about that french theatre massacre
I saw it at the Morelia film festival. It is rubbish that insults the thousands of victims of drug trafficking. It is a way of trivializing a problem that is very painful in Mexico. It is a film that looks with the eyes of a European tourist, like a good European using all the clichés of how they imagine Mexico and its problems. The director himself said in an interview that he did not investigate the Mexican reality. All that was left was for me to bring out Mexicans with charro hats and maracas dancing the cucaracha or cielito linda. An insult to the families of missing drug victims. And then trying to redeem the "handyman" by turning him into a "saint" is like trying to turn Hitler into a saint if he, after sending the Jews to the ovens and concentration camps, took them out of the pits to hand them over to their relatives. And all of them, but particularly, Selena Gómez acting as if she were in a soap opera, not even a good Mexican soap opera, but a gringo telenovela from Telemundo.
I am currently on vacation in Mexico, they are DESTROYING this movie down here, they think its bonkers bad and this pos winning at the golden globes is sending them though the roof, trust me the performances were far from "right", to put it modestly
This movie getting so many awards is the most confusing to me because everybody who has watched Emilia Perez says it's trash 😂 I mean I'm not Mexican much less Hispanic but I refuse to watch it out of principle as I think it's very disrespectful and insulting to the Latin community and the fact it was written and directed by a white Frenchman who outright admitted he couldn't bother to do any research on Mexican culture was enough for me to say nah I guess this Hollywood trying to be inclusive but at the same time they're lowering the bar for so called inclusivity
La actuación de Selena Gómez es terrible, su español es muy malo, y ni se logra entender nada, ademas es algo ofensiva para los mexicanos, cuando se estrene le va a caer mucho hate.
@@angelayinde6413 the thing is, she does not sound like that either. We know Selena does not speak Spanish, but her dialogue was written for someone who is native. It felt extremely odd.
That’s is the least of the issues with this movie. The director should be embarrassed for this movie, holy fuck. Sicario movie is a perfect example on how to provide respect to such loaded subject.
I watched the film last night. Absolutely wretched. Terrible music, flat performances and a story and message constantly undercutting itself at every turn.
I didn’t finish it. I watched about an hour of it and just couldn’t take anymore. Please enlighten me. Why should anyone care about this movie? Why is it receiving critical acclaim? The random songs are atrocious, and I’m supposed to be sympathetic to a cartel leader who wants to fake his death and get a sex change? Horribly mind-numbing.
because europeans think narcos are sexy & fun! ofc you gotta forget that narco killed a bunch of people lol. The movie is much worse if you speak Spanish. They don't speak Spanish
It’s literally just pretentious rich people trying to out moralize each other while simultaneously being completely tone deaf and having zero actual moral standing or conviction in anything. This film is genuine garbage but because it’s about a trans character and is in Spanish white saviors NEED to praise it
Selena is horrible in this. Yes, she doesn't speak Spanish, but there are English speakers who put more effort to pronounce than her. What a terrible performance. If you speak Spanish, you're going to hate this movie with the plain awful actings. If you don't speak Spanish, maybe you'll think they're doing a good job... Believe me, they aren't!
This movie is garbage. If you understand Spanish and know something about the culture, you realize that the plot and character development are completely stupid. The dialogues and performances are terrible, and the worst part is the representation of Latin and Mexican culture, shown through the typical Hollywood filter that Gringos love.
The middle of the film has some amazing emotional scenes but overall I was disappointed. It felt like a few different films in one that can work but I wasn’t feeling it with EP.
Seriously Austin, do you believe that Selena, Zoe and Karla were great performers in this movie? This film shows a very superficial view on serious problem in Mexico, I do not know how a person can buy the story that a violent drug dealer leader can change his mind overnight to become a saint. Sincerely, I am struggling to understand why this movie is having so much hype, music and lyrics are just gross, as all the movie, please help me to understand how this movie can be an Oscar contender. Americans also suffers the effects from all the actions these people bring with the drugs, how you can buy a film like this?
The depiction of Mexico isnt bad. As a Mexican i am not mad at it. The acting itself is good. The story is at least interesting, what gets me is having Zoe be Dominican and no very clearly indicate that she is and is now living in Mexico and working there as a lawyer and it isnt dawning on anyone that is what is happening. There are black people in mexico she could have played a true mexican, by getting the accent right , but i feel like this movie did not make the efford to cast any mexicans as the main characters or give the actors the time to sound and feel mexican. Selena is supposed to be a mexican american women that still cannot speak spanish fluently even after living in mexico for years, just give the girl more time to get it right. The lady playing Epifania is the only mexican actress in the cast and she does an amazing job. I think from the mexican audience she is the only that makes sense in this story. Everything else feels fake. Like a soap opera by way France. The other issue i have with it is that the main character is one of the most violent man turn trans women. The trans part is not the issue, the issue is that i am supposed to believe that a men that has inflicted so much violence and death and was probably one creating many of the death and missing of my country has a sudden chance of heart and now wants to help people find their missing death. The story just didnt give me enough to belive the change. Just didnt.
I agree with you, i felt really annoyed that the victims of the narcocartels are carrying and statue of the ex-druglord, now Emilia, as a saint!!! Sorry, but once a criminal, always a criminal, regardless of your gender! why are the victims carrying the criminal? I don't get it.

I agree with some you mentioned. Although, it was a new idea and a thought provoking concept, the execution wasn't as satisfactory for me. It probably would have been better if it wasn't a musical. Some potential spoilers follows; It really should have dove more into the background of each characters and made a more compelling personality for the drug lord. You could have shown more of a struggle with what they are doing in the beginning with running it. Or showing them fall into it by their boss dying and being raised around this kind of life and showing the cruelty others have towards people who are weak. You could have even gave them flashbacks later on when finding the missing persons and having been involved with some of them and really seeing the impact it makes on families and showing it break them inside. There wasn't enough storytelling and details to flesh out a proper character that you could care for. They really should have been struggling a lot more than they were. And since there wasn't enough struggle being shown and mindset being shared, it made it hard to care about any characters in the movie and whatever happens to them is met no emotion because of it.
