@@fleatactical7390 Friendship is not a one-way street. Canada has always had America's back. From the taking-in of 33,000 stranded Americans on 9/11, major disaster relief after Hurricane Katrina, secretly orchestrating the escape of six American diplomats during the Iranian hostage crisis of '79, and even sending water-bombers to California just a few weeks ago, Canada has always been a true neighbour to our American cousins. We also answered the call when America invoked Article 5, and spent billions of dollars fighting in Afghanistan, where many Canadians fought, bled, and died. All we've ever asked for in return for being good neighbours is a fair trading relationship and to be treated as equal partners.
As thanks, the new US President just this week threatened us with annexation. Whether it be by 'economic force' or otherwise, that is not some mild threat. That is nothing short of a knife in the back. He has threatened our sovereignty and our freedom. Anyone surprised by Canadians booing the US anthem right now needs to give their head a shake. You'd absolutely be booing ours if our head of state threatened your sovereignty and freedoms. We're a peaceful people, but don't mistake our politeness for weakness. Canadians are more united right now than I can remember seeing them in my lifetime.

Canadians have never tied the National Anthem to honoring military service. We see it as a patriotic element of the nation and so we are happy to share in our neighbor's love of their nation with our own rendition when necessary just as we sing our own. As such, if it's about honoring the nation, booing is about denouncing the nation.
Most of the time, booing at games is booing the anthem as a stand in for the other team and that is stupid and wrong - regardless of rivalries, denouncing a nation because their team happens to be playing games is utterly poor. But this is a correct representation.

His tool of choice is to hurt Canada financially by shrinking exports into the US, devaluing our dollar, forcing interest rates higher, along with unemployment. This is an extortion. And I'd agree that it is important for people to understand in no uncertain terms that there will be suffering on both sides of the border if they proceed with a trade war. But for whatever reason tariffs are coming back in vogue, and the only thing that gives us any long-term barganing power is a commitment to greater independance and self-reliance, even if that involves recession in the short term. If the plan is to threaten the economies of Canada, Mexico and the EU every month for the next four years, we may all decide that we would rather respect Mr. Trump's stated wishes for no one in the world to do business with America anymore. But if we simply continue to grovel to maintain the status quo, we lose ground inch by inch.

When relations are good Canadians sing along or boo depending on the situation. It's about the game. This is about the current political situation, not the game. It's not a slight on the people in the stands, or on the ice. It's aimed entirely at the government.
I found the booing of the Canadian anthem at the Nashville game silly (not being hypocritical, they can boo all they want) considering Canada hasn't done anything to America, but it was just a few people. I think the vast majority of Canadians and Americans can understand why this is happening. It's not rocket science, we're scared, anxious and pissed off and we as a people don't have any direct platform to America. The US has a $55 billion trade deficit with Canada. Canada has been implementing all sorts of unfair and unjust tariffs on the US for decades. One extreme example is dairy products having a 240-290% tariff in the US depending on quotas. The US has been getting fleeced from Canada for years. I don't understand why a 25% tariff is such a huge deal. It's been a one way street for decades. Canada makes it really difficult for our stuff to come in and in some cases impossible meanwhile we've been letting everything in. Why should the US continue bending the knee to Canada? We're just matching fire with fire. Shouldn't the US be able to use it leverage and negotiating powers to benefit its own citizens? The US government has no duty to Canada or its citizens. It's job is to protect its own citizens. And when you've been a bad neighbor for such a long time you should expect us to eventually fight fire with fire.

Do you know why he only put 10% on energy? because we supply so much at a huge discount, dont even sell to other markets and if we started taking market price and shipping our energy products to asia that would hurt you. Similar story with our other natural resources. 22 billion in annual tourist revenue that most canadians I know are refusing to travel to the US to provide. Energy alone pretty much negates the trade deficit argument (which trade deficits arent inherently a bad thing.) and there's just so much more id assume you're choosing to be ignorant to. the damage guns from the states do versus the 43lbs fent going the other way that i could carry in a single backpack...

Agree on the dairy thing. Canada is overly protectionist of that industry for long held political reasons. As a Canadian, we like American cheese and it sucks we can't get it here. However fighting fire with fire would mean matching dairy tariffs, not 25% blanket tariff on all goods, crippling the Canadian economy. Regarding trade deficits etc, that's gone both ways depending on year and which industries you include. America is not bending the knee, both nations benefit from trade. The fact you support a trade war with your closest economic ally is mind blowing and probably reflects the frighteningly low levels of education in the US. NAFTA allows for a huge discount in free trade between the two countries especially as Canada exports thousands of barrels of oil to the US for a discount to be processed, only for us to buy it back at a premium rate. @VE3LIX We do need Canadian help in securing the border against illegal immigration and smuggling of fentanyl and other drugs. A border is far more secure against this sort of low-level crime if it is secured by the governments on both sides. These problems along the Canadian border do not get as much attention because of far bigger similar problems along the US-Mexican border, but they are still problems which need to be addressed.
Trump's tough talk is very familiar by now as a negotiating tactic. I personally would prefer a more diplomatic approach which doesn't show the "stick" unless and until the "carrot" is refused, but we didn't have a presidential candidate who follows that approach last year. Our choice was between one candidate who charged at the problem in an undiplomatic fashion, and a candidate who just ignored the problem and let it fester. In view of that choice, I make no apologies for going with the first option.
It looks like Canada will soon have their own change of leadership for the better. Once that happens, I am confident that a deal can quickly be made which will benefit both countries. Once a good deal is reached, Trump's blister can abruptly turn to high praise. We've all seen this movie before...

This will never be spoken of by our current PM as it doesn't fit his narrative for his version of gun control which totally misses the point; guns out of the hands of criminals. Your boos mean nothing, I've seen what you elected! ;)
But really, go ahead and boo. if you're not happy with USA, I think you still have some semblance of freedom of speech in Canada. Yer not the UK yet!
I understand your anxiety about America using it's economic power as a bully pulpit. I won't sweat it too much. I believe the desire is to get Canada to the negotiating table about border security. The tariffs are the stick to get Canadian leadership to realize they need the USA more than they think they do, so they will be willing to work with the USA on things important to the USA.
Quite frankly, the USA has been in imbalance for quite a while giving away far too much and getting too little in return. The people of the USA elected Trump for the USA to put Americans first rather than the rest of the world first and Americans second/third/last. But the counter point to this imbalance now the rest of the world needs the USA far more than the USA needs them. So there will be some more strong-arm/bully-pulpit type moves until the situation is a lot closer to balanced.
I don't believe USA nor Trump want to "crush" any of our existing allies, but rather get more balance with them. There will be some temporary pain/anxiety (even for Americans), but I feel in the long run everybody will be better off.

No tariffs were actually put in place and the Canadian government agreed to put in more border security to help stop the flow of fentanyal into the US. Fentanyal is a huge problem here, see san Francisco, and the fact it is coming across both canada and Mexico makes it extremely hard to control. Would I have done the negotiations the way trump did, no probably not and I think it did hurt some relations. On the other hand I will say it did not seem like canada was too keen on helping the US with the drug trafficking problem

70lbs of Fentanyl has come across the Canadian border, compared to 20,000lbs on the Mexican border. Plenty of US guns cross the Canadian border though.
But here's the thing. Their whole argument is incoherent. At one moment it's Fentanyl, the next it's Canadian military spending as a part of NATO. Half of Trumps cabinet don't know what excuse is the excuse. But also, how do tariffs stop Fentanyl? Or is Trump using Tariffs as a bully move. Allies usually opt for diplomacy. Canada were already increasing border security. As were Mexico. All this is a show to lay up easy wins. Meanwhile damaging America as a trading partner or an ally. Trump might get a win, but it's not a win for America or American people.

Something like 0.2% of fentanyl entering US came from Canada. A literal fraction of a fraction of 1 %. And the supposed concessions that US got out of all this anxiety-inducing nonsense with the tariffs are things CANADA WAS ALREADY DOING OR GOING TO DO ANYWAYS. That's right, the adults in the room were already doing things to improve the situation ---fentanyl is a problem for Canada too btw --- and the adults had already figured out that its necessary to tighten up the borders to stop the easy flow of drugs in or out of our country. There was NO reason to threaten or impose tariffs. Furthermore, tariffs haven't been fully taken off the table either, so the nonsense could continue at any point. That's what you get when a literal idiot has been voted into the office of President of USA.

Wake up, you're being lied to.
Also, way more illegal guns, people, and drugs flow across the border from US to Canada, than Canada to US.... are we whining and crying and planning tariffs? Trump just wanted a quick win and is too stupid to realize this was not the realm to find it in.

Please read: This recent uproar is not a "trade war", this is a "drug war" as far as the USA is concerned. Trudeau was reluctant to act to curb the flow of fentanyl into Canada from China then make it's way from the ports, eventually getting across our northern border. Trudeau visited Trump and that is what they agreed. Trudeau did his thing however, he actually did nothing about what was agreed. This prompted the tariff response. He then committed to doing something about the drugs so the tariffs were postponed. However he immediately reneged again then slapped retaliation tariffs on American goods etc. so the tariffs went back into effect again. The US administration is only trying to stop the dying from specifically fentanyl flowing into the country which is becoming the number one cause of death of young people. Canada could do with less drug overdoses as well so one has to wonder why Trudeau would escalate this is into a trade war. Maybe he needs to improve his image in Canada or maybe he has other agreements that the citizens are not aware of or perhaps he seeks to destroy Canada on his way out?? Trump only mentioned the annexation to stimulate responses to getting action not words from Trudeau. Mexico on the other hand avoided tariffs by sending 10,000 soldiers to their border and their ports to at least slow down the flow of drugs from China as well. Please research a bit so we all know the realities of the recent events. It is a known fact that China makes and distributes the chemicals that are required to make fentanyl as well as the drug itself. I am not picking sides, I am just trying to smooth international hockey relations. I live in a border city and have been in Canada well over 200 times and counting. Anyone booing a national anthem at a sporting event needs to grow up.
Do you have the right to do it? Sure, free speech so have at it. But do it knowing you're just brining negative attention to yourself. At least now we know where the grown ass adults who choose to act like children are sitting.
Be above that. Leave your personal political signs (what this essentially is) at home. Go to a hockey game to watch your squad compete against some of the best players in the world and to share that excitement with 20,000 other people regardless of the color of their jersey, or their flag.

    As an American,
I wish I could say this doesn't represent the majority of us, but the polls don't lie. This is what we voted for; act now, think later politics. Selfish politics. America first politics, in a country buily by mixed races on stolen land.. its *depressing*

Worried about your kids futures? 😂 a couple tariffs aren’t gonna destroy the entire nation of Canada buddy. Holy drama queen

This didn't come out of nowhere. Canada has been doing these same sort of tariffs to the US for years. Additionally, President Trump has said he was going to do it. As an American, who voted for President Trump, I will say that Canadians booing our national anthem means nothing to me nor anyone I know. We just laugh at it.

if canada wouldve just listened and secured the border which shouldnt have been an issue in the first place we wouldnt even have the talk of a tarrif. but good thing canada folded anyways. also if you look up even on canadian news sources we are producing tons of fentynal HERE, not china..... HERE. look up all the new people from canada being caught with smuggling drugs in the USA. its not as bad as mexico but its not really a problem to be ignored for so long.

Its pathetic how naive you are. Canada didn't fold you moron. They have always been planning to spend 1.3 billion dollars on border security. It was voted through months ago and has been in the process of being implemented since then. Whether or not Donald ever talked about tariffs, this plan was happening... and nothing about it has changed AT ALL. So the tariffs achieved literally nothing, except pissing off America's largest trading partners. Even the "win" that Trump mentioned in Mexico, with them sending troops to the border.... they already do that every single year lol and have for several years in a row now. In fact, they sent more troops last year than they commited to this year. Also, last year 42 pounds of fentanyl were seized coming from Canada into the US.... 29,000 pounds from Mexico to the US.... yeah, Canada sure is the problem. Jesus, what a boob.
The tariffs didn't do anything at all... Trump just underestimated how hated they would be, even by most Americans, and needed some sort of "win" to point to when he folded and recalled them.... and rubes like you just gobble it up and think it was a great idea. Do some research and get informed, its just sad.

Idk it's disrespectful to boo at another nations national anthem. The national anthem was around long before any of these politicians were around makes no sense to boo during a song. It's trashy on both sides of the border. It really does suck that our relations are starting to sour. I'm starting to think becoming one country isn't a bad idea because this would never be an issue if that was the case. The European Union pulled it off and the differences between those countries are far greater.
