Thank heaven for those recording devices, without them, all ofthat would be lost .Allthe bands were excellent, but Benny Goodman was totally unbeatable.

Veramente molto bravo Benny Goodman e very very good il pezzo da lui suonato all' inizio: si vede che i signori di Praga voleva proprio lasciarli a bocca aperta per la meraviglia. 27:30

Everyone puts Benny down for his bossy temperament , but he could make humorous joyful quips when he felt at home with the fellow musicians, as with Chechoslovakian or Danish rhythm sections he had not rehearsed with before. All geniuses are often misunderstood for being “ know it all’s “

You had to be a tough guy to keep 18 or 20 musicians in line.

The drummer here, Barrett Deems, was from Chicago, Benny's hometown.

What a difference when leading a big band that requires 'bossy temperament' just like that of any conductor of any ochestra, vs. playing his clarinet specifically in a small formation. Later case absolutely ready to cooperate, even subordinate his part and instrument. Though dominating, that is quality.

Looks like Britain’s own Lenny Bush On Bass and the mighty Barrett Deems at the drums.
Beautiful rendition of Dave Brubeck’s composition ‘The Duke’ by John Bunch.
    Lovely tune.

Man, Buddy Tate was a beast on tenor. You don't mess with Lester Young's counterpart in Basie's classic lineup. He was also one of the sweetest clarinet players around. He and Benny clearly enjoy playing together. What a treat.

Damn, I think I like Goodman's playing in the later years, he seemed a bit more wild in the upper registers. Maybe he started smoking hash.

It's was noticed cause Benny G. was always in such perfect key and a perfectionist that no one in the band could hide mistakes...his licorice stick was meticulously picked by him and tuned ...unlike his hair style.

There may be a few clarinetists who might be his equal-perhaps Artie Shaw, Pete Fountain, Buddy De Franco, Ken Peplowski to name a few-but I doubt anyone surpassed Goodman as a jazz clarinet virtuoso.
What is noteworthy-at least to me-is despite his clarinet fluency is how wooden, almost professorial Goodman was addressing his audience.
I get it. They didn’t have come to hear him speak.
However, Goodman was reputed to have prickly personality and it’s not a stretch to imagine.
The ‘Goodman stare’, for instance, was often trotted out to quietly admonish some hapless musician during a performance. I’ve seen it in a UA-cam clip that i can’t name at the moment.
But hey........what a musician. So I don’t suppose his personality is of much importance.

What fascinated me seeing Benny Goodman 1981 in concert was the fact that he was still at the top of his skills. The sound and technique was the same as I had heard it from records in the 30s and 40s. And whatever people tell about his unpleasant ways with sidemen, during this concert he was joking with them and applauding their solos.

The musicians called that stare "the BG ray"; and, I once was on the receiving end of it after he gave me his autograph.

He was raised in abject poverty in a Jewish slum in Chicago and his dad shoveled raw lard for a living. As soon as Benny and his brother showed musical talent, he told them to not follow in his footsteps. Goodman never lost sight of his roots and was driven to never be in that situation again and he expected the same work ethic of everyone around him.
