The issue with diamonds is that not all are suitable for use in jewelry (I've read once that only 30% of all diamonds extracted are suitable). Diamonds can be used in various equipment such as oil drill bits. In this case, they don't need to have more specific patterns like for a jewel (purity, color, carat, etc.). So that's why it can cost a lot.
