My only visit to Philly was in 1980; great town. My wife's grandmother was from Philadelphia. Of the three cheese steaks, the last one is how I prefer the meat. The only really good Philly cheese steak I ever had was from a street vendor in Las Vegas, some 30 odd years ago. Great video!
As a transplant to SoCal from the Philly area, this was fun. Didn't know Pops was a Jersey boy, I got to knuckle the bell as a kid too. This is Through My Lens come full circle. Oh, and Jim's, no question.
From S Jersey, too! Loved your tour of Philadelphia. I went to Geno's several years ago but Jim's is in my list now! Thank you for taking us on all of your trips, my 1st was Route 66 ❤
Hey, Josh! I am always impressed with where your lens takes me! I especially love this video because I am a history buff and never really considered visiting Philadelphia. After viewing this video, I really want to go! Thanks for sharing.!
I also recommend the Rodin Museum on Ben Franklin Pkwy which is a great place to see his works like the Gates of Hell and The Thinker. Another one of my favorites is the Mütter Museum, which is a medical history and oddity museum that has stuff like the Wax Lady, a wall of ancient skulls and a piece of JFK's brain tissue.
Another tremendous video, Josh. Philly is just about the perfect place for you to make one of your "perfect 24 hours" films, as there is SO much packed in the historic Philadelphia area. Independence Hall always brings tears to my eyes, knowing how God blessed our nation with so many gifted men in a burgeoning colony of only 3 million people, who sacrificed their livelihoods and even their lives to allow this nation to take roots in the fertile soil of democracy and freedoms. Keep up the great work -- your videos are a blessing!
Wow, I have never been on that city hall tour. Didn't even know you could go up inside the spire. Lol. Born and raised in Philly and never knew that. 🤣 Looks awesome! Next time I'm there, I'm gonna do this.
I visited Philly back in 2019 and visited 75% of the places you did. No doubt it is a history lovers paradise. I was told by locals to avoid Geno's and Pat's and instead go to Joe's Steaks and Sodas Shop in the Fishtown area. It was so awesome. They even had a hot pepper bar. Also another cool historical place to eat is McGillins Old Ale House. Great video as always
Thanks so much for this video. In 1976, I was lucky to go on a bicentennial tour through my Jr. High in Santa Cruz, CA. What I value most is being to run my fingers over the crack in the Liberty Bell in Independence Hall. It impacts me to this day. Thanks for the great video 😊
I’m born & raised in DE, about 2 hours from Philly. I grew up on chopped cheesesteaks and didn’t realize that the famous Philly ones weren’t cooked that way. I’m with Pops, sometimes you want a little mayo 😊
I’ve heard a lot of great things about Philadelphia, mostly from sports, its strong sense of community, and its underrated public transit network, which is very underfunded. SEPTA is a historically significant system, And it needs some serious help from a funding standpoint.
Grew up ninety minutes from Philly and have visited it many times. Your video is really great! City Tavern is another great place to eat. It offers a historic dining experience, with Colonial cuisine and the wait staff in period costumes. Super nice!
When I visited Philidelphia in 1979 a bunch of us ran up the same steps Rocky did and we had a boombox blasting the Rocky song while we were running. I will always love that epic memory.

Great video! Like Pop I grew up across the river in South Jersey. I worked in Philly for almost a dozen years. Never had a cheesesteak from Pat's Geno's or Jim's. Only from street vendors, which I ate from at least three times a week. I never heard of the Cherry Street Pier. I definitely will be going to soon. ❤❤❤❤
Living vicariously through Pop’s and Josh’s videos! Thanks for taking us all along with you through your adventures. It makes my heart happy seeing a dad and his son travel all over the US together. I also love your videos with Amy and your kids (and the rest of the fam). The food reviews are also a fun part 🙌🏼 stay adventurous and healthy, you guys!
Went there two years ago while I was visiting Washington. I saw the American Revolution Museum, the Liberty Bell, the Rocky Steps, and the Eastern State Pen. It was cool
Geno's hands down! We've tasted both just like you did. It's Geno's for the BEST Philly Cheese steak! You didn't mention ordering it 'wit' if you want onions! A must! I'm hungry now! Really enjoyed this video. Thanks!
The building with the ants on it is Zipper Head from the song "Punk Rock Girl" by the Dead Milkmen. The video for that song was also filmed in the Eastern State Penitentiary.
I need to revisit Independence Hall. My first 2 weeks visit to Philly, 1997, it was being worked on so only the downstairs was open. One of my favorite cities, I've been back many times over the years, but not there. Walking across the BF Bridge made me glad the Chesepeake Bay Bridge doesn't have a pedestrian walk! My first cheese steak, I ate at a different place until I had one that I craved and went there more than once! Now, I only have them in Philly!
We have plans to go to Philly next year. So excited to see the Rocky steps & Eastern State Penitentiary. Also, the park where The Fresh Prince of Bel-air was filmed (the park where he is playing basketball in the song intro) is nearby, so that's on our list too.
Very cool video! Glad you tried Jim's Cheese Steak, one of the best in Philly. Also, never knew about the artist area at the Ben Franklin Bridge, wow, cross that bridge all the time...living S. Jersey....never knew that existed!!
Next time you're in Philly, and you want a GIGANTIC cheesesteak, go to Leo's Cheesesteaks on Chester Pike in Folcroft, PA. The cheesesteaks are frankly HUGE, and take 2-3 meals to finish. Lol. I lived literally across the street from there from 2015-2023.
Hey Josh and Pops, I did the Geno's and Pat comparison about 11 years ago. My SO and I both agreed that Geno's was the best. The bread is what put Geno's over the top for us. If we ever get back to Philly, we will try Jim's.
I did my internship down at 5th & Market in the mid-90's, overlooking Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell (when it was on the north-east side of that block). Getting downtown from the suburbs (Delco) sucked, but it was an amazing experience working around so much history.
Love this video! And Philly. 😊. Visit Elfreth’s Alley during Neighborhood Fete days. I used to be able to go through the houses which are so tiny as most houses from the 1700s used to be.
Born ans raised and live 35 minute in Delaware, you naiked it especially picking Jims!!!! Excelellent vid Josh, I usually go to your California cyannel for my So Cal information.
Your video gives me an idea. I'm thinking about going to Philadelphia via Amtrak from Denver, where we reside. Definitely. know where to go for a good Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. I know most people have not,or won't do this, but reading the Federalist Papers gives context and appreciation for the places you visited, to which we want to see. Thanks!
Living in Philadelphia, you had me until Pat's and Geno's. Anyplace that doesn't make your cheesesteak to order isn't worth it considering the vast choices in Philly. Both places have giant piles of precooked beef. That's why you get your sandwich within seconds after ordering. Jim's does it the proper way.
I grew up in North Philly. MAX'S is the spot for me. But I understand tourists don't go up North because of how dangerous it is for someone who's unfamiliar with the city
I’m with you Pops…Coffee☕️before Liberty Bell🤣but glad that Josh finally allowed you to go sit in the coffee shop…I hope you enjoyed your coffee. Always great having a good tour guide…makes a big difference. My Fav part of the entire video was Elfreth’s Alley …if I win the lottery I’d love to buy one of the houses. Josh and Pops Balboa…I’m still laughing. ❤Pops and his big cup of ice cream at the end…Yum😋 TFS a great video❤️
When I went to A.S.U. in Tempe, Arizona in 1978 and again 1984 (I grew up in Tempe, Scottsdale area) there was this A frame drive through directly across from ASU called "SNOW" It had the BEST Italian Ice. I would always get the lemon ice. SOOO GOOD
I've heard that Angelo's Pizzeria on 9th St is supposed to be really good, both for cheesesteaks and pizza. I haven't tried them. For me, Jim's beats the "Tourist kings" Pat's and Geno's. If you're in the Dallas area, best place to get a Philly Cheesesteak is Big Tony's West Philly Cheesesteaks, they got 4 locations around Big D! No, I'm not connected with Big Tony, other than buying awesome cheesesteaks at his place.
Hey Josh! We are planning to go to New York, but we haven't decided if we wanna combine Philly or Boston and surroundings with New York. What do you recommend?
Oh man, both Philly and Boston are great but New York has so much to do! We spent a month there this summer and it left me wanting more haha. So I guess it depends on what you want to see
@@ThroughMyLens We are combining one of the two with New York! I heard so many great things about both places. But we just can not decide between philly or boston, its a luxury decision we have to make 😂😂😂. So if you really have to choose one, Boston or Philladelphia? We might go to Salem or a coastal town if we go to Boston!
@@kousojefPhiladelphia has the most history and historical sites. Philadelphia to NYC is 94 miles. NYC to Boston is over 200 miles. If you go to Philadelphia you should also go to New Hope Pennsylvania and Washington's crossing. About 30 miles north of Phila, you will feel like you're in England. Also go to Pennsylvania Dutch Amish country. 😊
I grew up about half an hour north of Philly. You hit some really great places. As a history lover, I'm kind of disappointed you didn't go into the Constitution Center. But there is just too much to see and do in such a short time. I've traveled to so many cities across our country and Philadelphia will always be my favorite. The Art Museum is interesting if you have any interest in art. I enjoy wandering around in there are just looking at the art that they have. The Franklin Insitute is nearby which is pretty much a hands-on science museum. So so so much to see and do in Philly. Thanks for this video!! p.s. If you ever get to the northern suburbs, try Lee's Hoagie House for a great cheesesteak. If they are using the brand Amorosso rolls, it isn't a real Philly cheesesteak.
Hey Josh n pops Another great adventure through your lens. Only thing you missed was Tun Tavern the famous bar birth place of the United States Marines however it is just a sign now as the bar has been torn down
As a european (Belgium) I love your video's, and they really help me deciding where to go next year. Especially since I don't want to go to NY or LA because pretty much all europeans that travel to th US visit only those 2 cities>
Jim's is definitely the best cheesesteak in Phila. Of course, there are better ones out in the burbs. And, if you ever come to Williamsburg, VA, Rick's cheesesteaks is actually as good as anything in Phila. I know, I grew up in Philly. (and Rick's family is from there, too!) Love your tours!
Love to go places with you both! One little known site to see in Philly is the University of Pennsylvania museums. They have excavated ancient Ur, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Best Egyptian mummy exhibit outside of London and Cairo. Also, of course, the weirdMutter museum is neat and there are many battlefields around Philly. Longwood Gardens is the most amazing gardens I’ve ever seen and that includes Versailles. Their billion dollar renovation project of the fountains it’s just the nightly icing on the cake. Philadelphia is really one of those places that takes weeks and you still don’t see everything. I would suggest going to Elfreth’s Alley on Fete Days. I think I mentioned that in an earlier comment. I look forward to each new video!!
Hey guys, Philly here...next time you go to Pat's or Geno's you need to order cheez wit instead of American. Also, get broccoli rabe at DiNics. Thanks for sharing our city ❣️

So bummed we didn’t run into you since we live and work walking distance to everywhere you stopped!
Mutter Museum.. There's an umlaut over the " u".
Elfreth's Alley.
@ As a former German student, I know but I don’t know how to get my phone to put it there.
Great video. Jim's is definitely superior to Pat's or Gino's but next time, go to John's roast pork .They are the best cheesesteak in the city.
AMERICA starts in Philadelphia. My entire family is from the Philadelphia and Jersey area ❤🇺🇸🙏🏻👍🏻
I want to go back and visit Pennsylvania I have the Franklin Institute and sunset golf I also have a vacation planned soon for Hershey Park
Go to the Kensington area, it will be a unique experience for you.
It's only like 4 blocks and nobody wants to see it. 😊
As a Philly person love the video. Only issue is the tourist trap trash that are Pats and Genos.
Hey guys, Philly here...next time you go to Pat's or Geno's you need to order cheez wit instead of American. Also, get broccoli rabe at DiNics. Thanks for sharing our city ❣️
Growing up there I never liked wiz always went with Am cheese.
FALSE 😂😂😂😂
Need to try John's Roast Pork for the best cheese steak in Philly.
Visit the oldest zoo in the country- phila zoo. Where the mint is, visit one if the largest libraries in the US
Now I need to go back!
As a lifelong Philadelphian, I really enjoyed this.

Someone I know went house hunting in Philadelphia. He loved the city, and the food. If they decide to move there, I’ll be able to go there and visit 😆🙌🏽
And yeah Josh, don’t tell Pops how to eat his food! 😂
You should for sure go! hah right 😂 that was funny
Yep! Thx for the support Violet! I can always count on you.
Question: While filming your trips, has anybody come up to you (Josh and Pops) and say that they have seen your other videos??
As a Philadelphian who frequents these areas? I’m about 75% in and can’t believe you did all this in 1 day lol. How many miles did you walk? Or was this not 1 day
Haha we did a lot of walking. Yea it was one day! We try to do as much as possible 😂
