Oh, when you whistle down the wind When you needle the dark with your mind When you're firing volleys of words in an arc When you're snuffing out all that's still alive And a droplet falls From the dropper's eye Blooms like a wave That slowly overruns all of your days And slips the caul From off your eyes You face alone A fear that's dragging us all in its wake And you kill the lights I know You're in the river now And you yield to the water's embrace And you lie like a stone on the banks, giving out As it carries off all of our names I know that sound I know what it likes I know it feels Like all the guns of a battery trained Right at your eyes Because it's real Because it pulls A thread of slowly unraveling days Annihilates Your mother tongue Your only light But hold this sound Follow it all the way And put down the knife The night is here But still is spinning out stars in its wake And that stubborn light Pools in your heart Warm and nacreous, baby The milk of sighs And dreams
Their earlier stuff is sleepier, but if you dig it, A Winged Life, Palo Santo, and Rooks are amazing albums. I didn't love The Golden Archipelago. Animal Joy is where they really picked up their more recent sound, and that album is excellent throughout too. I just found Jet Plane and Oxbow last night and every track is growing on me, but Backchannels is my earworm now :)
one of the most haunting songs man, esp once you know what its about that little voice in your head telling you to end it but realizing that its still worth living because we all feel that way some times we all know the voice too.
Many of their songs, including this, conjures up a picture of them standing on a high mountain peak looking over the world, and spinning in euphoria. Not other-worldly but an intense perception of this world.
They also have lots of songs that use metaphors of darkness and light in a similar way to the language in this song. I think euphoria is a good term. I won't speculate on Jonathan's mental health as it's not my place but I certainly appreciate the presentation of stark contrasts between highs and lows in Shearwater's music
I always loved how when he says "like all the guns of a battery" he sounds a little big congested as if he's just been crying. I hope I don't sound like some kind of creepy stalker fan but I totally loved the video for Immaculate, complete with the photos of Jonathan crying. It's easy to assume that talented professional musicians have their s*** together. I guess all I'm saying is I feel a connection with musicians when they offer brief windows into their despair. It makes me feel like less of a train wreck!
This is a pretty powerful song, its about suicidal thoughts and in your darkest moments that there is still light - living is still worth it. Would be hard to get through without that heavy emotional charge since its so personal, totally can see Jonathan choking up a touch; I know I can't get through the whole thing without doing so
Love it when my sadness hits me in the right way finally
What a magnificent piece.. Just heard it today for the first time.
yeah, I can't believe the level of artistry in this song
Oh, when you whistle down the wind
When you needle the dark with your mind
When you're firing volleys of words in an arc
When you're snuffing out all that's still alive
And a droplet falls
From the dropper's eye
Blooms like a wave
That slowly overruns all of your days
And slips the caul
From off your eyes
You face alone
A fear that's dragging us all in its wake
And you kill the lights
I know
You're in the river now
And you yield to the water's embrace
And you lie like a stone on the banks, giving out
As it carries off all of our names
I know that sound
I know what it likes
I know it feels
Like all the guns of a battery trained
Right at your eyes
Because it's real
Because it pulls
A thread of slowly unraveling days
Annihilates
Your mother tongue
Your only light
But hold this sound
Follow it all the way
And put down the knife
The night is here
But still is spinning out stars in its wake
And that stubborn light
Pools in your heart
Warm and nacreous, baby
The milk of sighs
And dreams
Nacreous...Jonathan, you like to send us to the dictionary, don't you?
I had to look it up and I’m glad I did
Favorite off the album..... so far
Just got into this band yesterday and I'm already addicted!
+Aaron Moore I can't believe I didn't know them until this album! They are so good!

I have listened
I have heard...and again
I will never forget !!!
This just works so well, I don't know what it is but everything about this is perfect.
This reminds me of a special person and time in my life. It's an excellent song. Emilie ♥️
L.O-V-E this song...ART
Yeah, that's pretty perfect.
Shearwater does it again.
Sick drum beat. So subtly complex and interesting.
Also love how he took a Tom Waits-esque guitar solo and made it sound beautiful and inspiring rather than greasy

Verging on unfairly good

Well said.. I don't know if you know Doves - The Cedar Room already but worth a listen, has the same effect on me at least.
