How to get to know how many directories (../) are there. Do you brute force ?

You just need to put at least as many as subdirectories it's run from, additional ../'s usually don't hurt.
So if you're in /home/user/ 2 would be the correct amount, but /home/user/../../../../../../ also places you in /
