Why does this have dislikes? Let me guess the so called expert know it all's feel this wasn't up to their expectations? This woman did and outstanding job. She masterfully played and her voice was perfect for this type of drum. Excellent!!
I'm just guessing that the dislikes are people who feel woman still shouldn't touch the Batá, but that's one of the things I love about this performance.
Whatever reason they have, but the chants is demonic gibberish. I studied one on one with Johnny Almendra. After visiting Cuba and seeing these drums played, he would go on to never touch one.
@Carlos Thanks for checking it out . I am not offended since I've heard much worse as a female bataléra. I guess playing 3 drums with 2 hands that are normally played by six can come off sounding less than genuine but I can assure you a lot went into transcribing so as to stay true to the rhythms. Re: trying "hard to sound African" I only strive to play music not make a political statement. Musically sound critique allows "grown-up" dialogue rather than subjective attacks on race and gender.
The music of Faso is an inexhaustible source of sweetness. It allows us to plunge deep inside ourselves and at the same time resonate with our fellow man, Yé Lassina Coulibaly❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Does anybody know the name of the first song and where I can find the lyrics to it? I've heard Milton Cardona sing it many times and would love to be able to sing along.
Rezo for Elegua Bara suayo omonya laguana mama kenya irawo e Bara suayo omonya laguana mama kenya irawo e O bara suayo eke echu odara Omonya laguana mama kenya irawo e
I recently performed in Nigeria, Africa. Where the land of Yoruba began and the origins of the Bata Drum are born. You know how many Bata players I found and I was on a mission and had access. ZERO. The Bata drums LP sells and other companies sell are known as ABERIKULA, A non sacred drum, these drums are allowed to be played by anyone man or women and can be applied to all types of music. they are meant to enrich music and not to be excluded from a musician because of gender or race.
You are so awesome. My neice told me that you are her music teacher and Link she loves the song Lisette. And just to let you know if you have any Spanish songs to teach the kids Nadiyah can help she speaks spanish shes dominica
I enjoyed it! While there is obvious discrepancies within the religious sector - those are not sanctified drums. It obvious you are a musician and I support this type of work. The very small hiccups in your the beat went almost unnoticeable and honestly I could never do better :-) i'm terrible at playing - my rhythm is in my feet and not in my hands. Sigue por alli que tu va bien! Ashe pa'ti :-)
Did you even notice how beautifully Lisette sang? and her passion while playing those rhythms? I can tell you she did a beautiful job and played them correctly. Instead of noticing the Gender MrTimothy you should of gained inspiration. I recommend next time you search out a bit of knowledge and focus on expanding the mind and not creating barriers to keep it blind. The beauty of music and why I became a musician. Music has no boundaries, it does not exclude, it can transend and inspire. Be +
Well, MrTimothy I'm sorry to say but your a little miss informed. There are Batas of course for ceremonies these are Sacred Drums or Baptized drums and although you may be correct in that the majority are men who play them. Women like Lisette and many other are only expanding it's voice and carrying on the traditions.
This is a set of COMMERCIALLY FABRICATED drums. Anyone can play these drums. They have absolutely no religious value whatsoever. They are good for practicing and learning licks. What is a set of FUNDAMENTO DE AÑÁ is something TOTALLY DIFFERENT. I am an OMO AÑÁ and do not have a problem with seeing a woman play LP batas. Lissette does well for herself. She plays and sings with great flow and I imagine she worked very hard for that... And she's also beautiful, but I digress....

How can anyone dislike this? Beautiful playing and singing, Lisette.
