Someone on here said,I've been on a search for that song all my life! Me too dammit,me too! When I first heard it in 1976,I had a nervous breakdown! I couldn't take it! The Five Stairsteps w/ Cubie and Poppa Burke - NOT the Jackson 5 - were indeed the first family of soul and I say that with all due respect to Michael, Marlon, Jermaine, Tito, Jackie and Randy.

This jam was unique, cause within the stairsteps concept, there was a transformation to the next level. But at that time, black transformation was not cared for. The record industry cared less about a 2nd Resurrection. Too bad! We as a funky people missed out. Had there been a resurrection with many black artist, hip hop would have not became a culture. Just music to listen to.''One Direction'' is now the band of the day! Case closed children......
Seriously funky song....one of my all-time favorites...definite Larry Graham influence...Keni Burke is one of the all time funkiest bass players in the music industry...God bless them all!
This brings me to tears hearing this! An exceptional song not being played on the radio because of legal reasons. It brings me joy, and takes me back to a time where life was good. Thank you for sharing this gift!😀❤️❤️❤️
After I saw the cover, I went out and bought a white suit (lol). This album is one of the best albums of the seventies era if not all time. Its a shame it did not get the recognition it should have. Truly a must have for any album collection.
You are absolutely correct; an amazing album and so underrated. I have the album and got a CD version as well. I’d always hoped they’d tour, but it was not to be. RIP Clarence.

If someone asks me what was so great about the Seventies, I could talk all night or I could just play them this song. It's got everything I love about that era.
I have been looking for this jam for years. I could not remember the title. I knew it was the Stairsteps playing it. I recall hearing the song as I was growing up in Western Pennsylvania listening to WAMO. I could swear they introduced the artist by another name due to a dispute the family had contractually with the label. My search for Keni Burke brought me here. Thank God and thank you CharR for the post.
That album cover of the Brothers in the new style pose for them was the first of it's kind when it came into the second resurrection! Fantastic I have to say,I remember that time,it blew my mind. I have not gotten over it!.............Nice!
My cousin Alvin Thomas AKA Alvin Pruiett played the drums on some of the songs . He sent this album to me as a gift when it first was released. I still have this album to this day. RIP Alvin
One of the "Baddest" albums recorded, during that time! This band consisted of one of the "Coldest" bass players, ever. Mr. Keni Burke, of "Risin To The Top" fame
Thank you for this post. I remember this song getting spins on Philly radio back in '76, which was one of the most prolific years in R&B and Soul....Ever! This is a rare and precious find.
I loved this album when it came out. Almost wore the grooves off of it. Now that I just got a turn table and getting ready to get a black light (LOL), I'm going to thoroughly wear the grooves off this Stairsteps 2nd Resurrection album!
In an interview he gave years ago, Larry Graham was asked who he considered to be the best adopter of his bass-style. He mentioned Keni Burke. The 5 Stairsteps opened for Sly and the Family Stone in the late 1960s. Keni used to watch how Larry played and got pointers from him directly.
On this one!! It goes deep!!! This is right after they came out of the 5 Stairsteps Chapter (Ooh Child). They took off some years. Within that time was renovation. Then came ''This One''. Deep Shit in it's purest Form! If they did a Live Show, at that time, starting off with this one. All the brothers Lined up when the Curtain Opens............That would have been the show of '76
I have not heard this in years. They used to play this at Reid Street in NYC. The place used to be an old egg warehouse that they tuned into a club that used to be rocking and this is one of those tune that stood out. Thanks for digging this one up. Some really good memories with this one.
Minute 2:03 is the most soothing part of the song that makes me want to cry because of its beauty. No sadness, just joy listening to it. And the drum beat is everything to me!😀
I lived around there first house before they moved to King drive, they were all older than me except Cubie. They were mixed in all of my older brothers and sisters classes at Burnside Elementary. My oldest sis was friends with ALOAH, and my sis. was the only one out the family who went to HARLEM HS. she tranferd to PARKER HIGH in1964 when we moved to 69th Harverd, and we see the EMOTIONS singing comercials on the steps, And later they gave this great show at CHICAGO TEACHERS COLLEGE just past parker Elementary. Then my sis took us to the Capital theather to see the 4 STAIR STEPS cause Aloah was sick and didn't perform.
Barely remembered this tune when I heard Hal Jackson play it on his Sunday Morning classics program, on New York radio(I was living in NYC at that time, in about 1997 or 98). At that point I was like wow, I haven't heard this in decades, but I did remember it-great funk. I wonder how many other great tune like this, which didn't get a lot of airplay back then, would we remember, if we were to hear them again; so much great music is no longer heard or played on the airwaves, and there's nothing to replace or has been equal to, much less has been better than, this great music coming from that era and generation, back then. And this may be the only other instance apart from Parliament-Funkadelic, where a doo-wop/stand-up vocal group going back to the 1960s, continued to go forward with the music trend of that era(1970s funk/progressive R&B)and in my opinion, did it successfully, although this record did not get a lot of airplay from what I remember(and I was living in Detroit when this record first came out). Hats off to Keni Burke and the Five Stairsteps(or was it just the Stairsteps then?)for not getting left 'behind with the times', the way a lot of other groups did back then)! 2-7-23.
@adksaxplaya Here's the depth to Keni's ear and dexterity. Larry never showed Keni 1 lick. Keni developed that "double thump" on his own. I've known Keni since we were 15 and he introduced me to Larry in1977. He taught me how to play. He'd turn his back and play and say "If you can get it you can have it" He'd eventually show me but..you had 2 work for it. When I made the jump to radio, I interviewed Larry in DC. Larry said "When I hear Keni play.I can't tell sometime if it's him or me"
