The girl at the beginning of the scene is Debbie Reynolds... she was actually born in El Paso Texas... and was the momma of Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia of Star Wars fame).
It was done in one take. He had pneumonia and 103 fever while filming this scene. The woman(Debbie Reynolds), playing his love interest said he was a perfectionist and made her cry because she couldnt get the dancing right in the number they did. Im guessing it didnt help that she had new shoes that left her feet blistered and bleeding. In the end she was sitting under a piano crying and Fred Astaire another famous dancer found her and helped her. First he did a completely improvised routine for a solid hr and said dancing never gets easier but taught her the entire routine so she could film it. Later Gene Kelly said he was amazed of how gracious Debbie Reynolds was and continued to talk to him after the movie wrapped.
This is one of the all time greatest dance scenes in the movies by an all time great dancer, Gene Kelly. I showed this video to my grandchildren, ages 3 and 5 and they understood that this man was so in love that he didn't care if he got wet. Also, they noticed how nice he was to give his umbrella to another man. Even at these young ages, my grandchildren could appreciate this scene from 70 years ago. How cool is that!
Films & music completely segregated at that time. Now watch " Stormy Weather" (1943 sll blsck cast ) The tap dance performance of the Nicolas Brothers revered as the greatest ever caught on film. Michael Jackson gave them the highest praise as a major influence.
Not to mention that Donald O'Connor (one of his co-stars) was an inveterate alcoholic and drank through every one of his scenes, including some stellar dance performances.
The movie is a must watch. Gene was a very athletic, but also graceful dancer. You have to watch Gene and Jerry the Mouse (from the Tom & Jerry cartoons) dance together from the movie Anchors Aweigh. You will love it. Loved this. ❤️✌️
4:45 - one of my single favorite movie moments! The music swells, the camera pulls back and up, Gene Kelly's dancing becomes HUGE (look how much space he uses after the dance routine being mostly close-up and intimate to that point) - it all adds up and takes your breath away. Magic!
Gene Kelly was one of the great dancers of the 50's. Very athletic dancer. Whereas Fred Astaire was smooth & elegant. I love them both. Singing in the Rain is a great movie.
Watch yourselves in this reaction and see how happy this made the two of you. Not only were you smiling from the proverbial ear to ear but your eyes actually glowed. Amazing what true talent and entertainment can give us.
Gene Kelly is one of the greatest dancers of Hollywood. He’s right there with Fred Astaire on the list of great dancers. Singin’ in the Rain is a great movie to watch. One of the classics it takes place in Hollywood just as talkies are coming on the scene-and it has a lot of singing and dancing. Most big stars back then were what was called a triple threat they could act, sing and dance! Those routines were often done in one take. You notice the cuts aren’t as quick as they are today for dancing in music videos. These Guys practiced doing the whole scene in one take. So most of these are one or two takes at the most.
Gene Kelly was one of the greatest dancer and actors. Such a marvelous athlete and he made all of his dancing appear effortless. Gene would love to dance with props like the umbrella, the water, a mop, a coat rack. Anything! Marvelous!!😅
Great reaction! some info from Wikipedia: In the sequence in which Gene Kelly dances and sings the title song while spinning an umbrella, splashing through puddles and getting soaked with rain, Kelly was sick with a 103 °F (39 °C) fever.[28][29] The water used in the scene caused Kelly's wool suit to shrink during filming.[30] A common myth is that Kelly managed to perform the entire song in one take, thanks to cameras placed at predetermined locations. However, this was not the case; filming the sequence took two to three days.[31] Another myth is that the rain was mixed with milk in order for the drops to show up better on camera; but the desired visual effect was produced, albeit with difficulty, through backlighting But do notice that there are few if any cuts to the video to switch to a different scene - mostly a continuous filiming. So "one take" is many physical minutes long. Multiple takes meant many long hours and actually days to get the seqeunce down perfectly. With a high fever no less
Gene Kelly was not only a fantastic dancer. He was also the choroeograher for the movie. it is regarded as one of the greatest hollywood Movies. . By the way he had a temperature while performing this part of the movie. you would never thing he was ill.
There was a musical I believe was called the pirates.. And you see him dance up a wall , across a tightrope, down these tall ledges ect. I saw a special and it turned out even the right rope and "up the wall" parts were all him. No stuntman, no wires. It is incredible. Like a buff guy dancing parkour..
Right before this in the movie is "Good Morning, Good Morning," another top notch dance number. That's higher energy and this is the happy afterward. Singing... was closed out of the Oscars because the year before Gene Kelly's An American in Paris swept up the awards and the Academy didn't want to award too much to a similar(ish) musical film 2 years in a row.
I grew up in the 50s. We had so many musical movies with wonderful music. I don't see many reactors reacting to these wonderful films. "My Fair Lady", "Oklahoma", "Singing in the Rain", "Sound of Music", "South Pacific", "The Music Man", "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", and more including animated. I think Tasha would melt watching My Fair Lady and T would also enjoy the music.
Agreed… great recommendations!! I live on TCM! Been watching all the old classics. Watched Fred Astaire dance on the ceiling in Royal Wedding the other day!! Gene was a brilliant performer, but I think Fred was better! Be well, my friend! God bless… from Texas!!
This is the most iconic scene in the movie, but the best by far is "Make 'em Laugh!", followed by "Good Morning!" I definitely recommend watching the whole movie, it's one f the best of the d movie musicals.
Yes! You really need to see the whole movie it won several academy awards! The movie IS called" Singing in the Rain" Debbie Reynolds was only 19 years old when she made her screen debute and she felt overwhelmed by having to costar with such greats as Gene Kelly and Donald
Dick Van Dyke was in Mary Poppins. ☂️👜🐧 Question; This is somewhat related to this theme but, have you ever seen/reacted to "Old movie stars dancing to Uptown Funk". It's a really cool video. So many legends too! 😃💃🕺
There is a story about this scene that supposedly when Kelly showed up on set to record this scene, he had a raging fever. The director told him to go home, but he refused. He said that everyone had gotten up and worked to get there so he insisted on following through. He performed this while suffering with a 102 degree fever!
Gene Kelly was a man’s man. He was so talented as a dancer, singer and actor! He could do it all. You need to watch the dance number he does on roller skates, it’s amazing!❤ Gene Kelly did everything to perfection, that’s why everything he did was so beautiful and effortless looking.
Gene Kelly....one of our most famous dancers, ( tap, ballet and jazz). Gene starred in numerous movies, these are some of his best: Singing In The Rain, (1952) An American in Paris (1951) On The Town (1949) Anchors Aweigh (1945) Gene is a legendary song and dance man, along with Fred Astaire also legendary. Genes has a more athletic style of dance where Fred was more on the romantic style with long graceful lines. Singing in the Rain has several iconic dance scenes in it. This is one of the most iconic. There is another one is called Good Mornin'. It stars Gene along with Donald O'Conner ( another song an dance man of the time and a very young Debbie Reynolds ( in her breakout role). Debbie became a big star in her own right. One of her best movies is The Unsinkable Molly Brown ( you would like this movie I think. Debbie is also the mother of Carrie Fischer (princess Leia of Star War s) there is one more dance number that O'Conner does as a solo called Make 'am Laugh. Gone are the days of these studio musicals. It's a shame because they always lifted spirits and made us forget our troubles for a little while. Anchors Aweigh has another iconic dance scenes with Gene and a cartoon mouse. .Back in the day, it was a big plus if an actor could sing and dance and if a go Over could act and sing. Sammy Davis Jr. is a perfect example of someone who could do it all and do it well. Check out this dance # of his called Bang Bang, from the movie Robin and the 7 Hoods (1964, a Rat Pack movie). Also if you haven't done so yet, please react to Mr. Bojangles by Sammy Davis Jr. (Germany 1985...live) We need more entertainment like this, not the pelvis and booty gyrating stuff singers need to use today to distract from their lack of pure vocal talent.
Gene Kelly was a true performer. When he did this scene he had a fever of 104° degrees. He was sick. Gene Kelly and several dancers or hoofers (slang) were very athletic and physical in their dancing. Donald O' Connor in "Singing In The Rain" did a song & dance called "Make Them Laugh" He was very comedic and very physical, acrobatic, and athletic in this dance and other dances in the movies. One movie he was dancing on roller skates. Gene Kelly did he own stunts. He also directed the movie "Hello, Dolly" in 1969. Starting Walter Matthau, Barbara Streisand, Louis Armstrong played his trumpet and sang in it.
This is a must watch movie. Gene Kelly was wearing a wool suit so he had to keep changing his suit. If you watch you can see his suit shrink. Therefore it wasn't one take and the editor did a great job splicing the scene together.
Love this one. This era of movies and musicals is definitely a rabbit hole to go down. From the movie "White Christmas" you can watch the first scene with Bing Crosby singing "White Christmas" or a funny one "Sisters" with Vera Allen and Rosemary Clooney.
The giddiness of a child playing in a rain storm completely unconcerned how wet they become, is akin to one who just fell in love and has a whole new life/livelihood stretched out before him are joy filled moments in life. Gene Kelly was great in expressing this exuberance through song and dance! Yes, that was one long take and Kelly was a perfectionist! BTW, did you catch Princess Leah's (Carrie Fisher) mother in the early part of the shot?
I don't really remember it but Mom said one time I wanted to go out and play while it was pouring down rain, and she said no, I'd bet my clothes all wet. She said I went and put my swim trunks on.
So this is a slightly late comment, but during the filming of this, Gene Kelly was apparently really sick with a 103 degree fever- they filmed it during the day, putting a huge tarp over a couple of blocks to get the nighttime effect, and they colored the rainwater with milk so it would be visible on film. Kelly's suits, meanwhile, kept shrinking because of the water. For all that this is a great, iconic number, I don't actually think it's Kelly's best dancing even in the context of the movie. There's a great number of his from the movie Cover Girl where he dances with a double of himself- he filmed the entire scene twice, once as his character, once as the double. Technically, it was probably a much more difficult dance than this one. Thank you for reacting to this, though, I really enjoyed it!
I am so glad you are looking into the older movies and music. The key thing for the art from the older generation was talent. Today's fare just doesn't have the same feel.
The whole movie is incredible!! Just joyful and fun/funny, incredible talent. You'll love it. This is literally one of the most famous scenes in all of movie history, but there are many other great singing/dancing scenes in this movie that are also iconic. Gene Kelly also co-directed the movie. Go for it!
This is a great movie. Everytime it comes on TCM, I watch it. Also "Sound of Music", "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", "The unsinkable Molly Brown", "Meet me in St. Louis" "The Wizard of Oz", " Calamity Jane", "On moonlighf bay", "By the light of the Slivery moon" "Westside Story" There are so many more great movie musicals. I have only mentioned a few.
Every title you mentioned is great! Love the old musicals! Some others I like are "Brigadoon," "Summer Stock," "White Christmas," "By the Light of the Silvery Moon," "Tea for Two," "In the Good Old Summertime," "Oklahoma!", "Carousel," and "State Fair" (both old versions of it)!
This was from an era that spawned "entertainers". They sang, danced and acted with a level of talent never to be seen again. Gene Kelly commanded attention the minute he stepped into a scene. Aaaaah, what an era that was .
It's such a good movie, well worth a watch. I've always wondered how many takes they had to do for this scene, lol. Another good old movie for this time of year is White Christmas.
So happy to see you react to this classic song and movie clip! 🙂❤👍Love the older films. Another fun oldie film is "Pillow Talk" - with Rock Hudson and Doris Day. Merry Christmas!
This is one of the best musicals ever made and Gene Kelly was one of the best dancers ever. The rain scene is one of the most iconic dance scenes ever put on film. Debbie Reynolds is the mother of Carrie Fischer who played Princess Lea in Star Wars.
At this time of year, you need to see the Christmas movie "White Christmas". Also, if you're enjoying the tap dancing you will love the scene with a dancer by the name Vera Ellen. Just incredible. Also, you might want to check out a musical comedy called "Paint Your Wagon". It has Clint Eastwood singing in it. A couple of good songs from it are "Mariah and Wondering Star".
Gene Kelly has the flu and was running a fever when he filmed this sequence. He was so good that he made it look like he never felt better in his life. I prefer the camerawork for dance sequences in old movies. They let you see what the performers were doing. In modern films they cut every half second or so, which keeps the audience from seeing the grace and athleticism of the dancers.
Time frame. 1952 which is my year as well. The families were coming out of WW II and putting their lives together. Out of War and into the Hope of building a future with a family.. Baby Boomers (me). So just a kiss, could put you on that journey of excitement and it's reflected in his routine and music. Hope - The American Dream!
Singing in the rain was written well before the movie and numerous performers did it. They were trying to find the right combination and script for it. Their final choice was definitely a masterwork.
The movie is very funny, sweet, charming, full of a variety of great dance sequences and lots of music. The songs are from the time period that the movie is set in (approx the 1920’s) and were well-known classics. The film also is one of the spectacular films made in Technicolor which is a special film stock and technology that is still considered today as possibly the best and most long-lasting film color ever invented. The colors are all rich, saturated, vibrant and beautiful. Hope you have a great time watching “Singin’ in the Rain.”
Gene Kelly can dance - but I must say 5 words tho - Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and don't forget, Astaire was the top but Ginger did everything Astaire did but backwards and in heels. Love the channel
the movie is fun as fuck! and very meta if you like movie history. i've enjoyed tons of movies in my time, many of them on the big screen at revival theaters. for some reason it took me years to see this, but got to see it at the castro theater in sf, and it was such a spectacle.
I love my hard rock and metal.....but I grew up on old musical movies...Sound of Music, Carousel, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Oklahoma, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Mary Poppins .....so many, all great. You have allsorts of musical back grounds for sure. Just like the music I listen to.
They are actors in the movie, who sing & dance. LOL Adorable movie & several cool dance sequences. The gal in the beginning was Debbie Reynolds (Carrie Fisher AKA Princess Lia's mother) She sings & dances in this one too. Classic movie that you will enjoy. I promise.
Subscribed!! I love that you're doing this. You have to do "Make Em Laugh" from the movie "Singing in the Rain" too! Donald O'Connor performs it! I also highly suggest "Born in a Truck" from A Star Is Born (the Judy Garland version of the movie) . . . it's a show stopper. It's sort of in three parts . . . first she's singing in a ball gown, then it switches to a top hat and tails, then her sitting on the stage singing like nobody else. It's wonderful.
Watch the entire movie! Not only is Kelly’s dancing amazing, there’s also athletic performance by another terrific dancer, Donald OConnor. And it’s also a very funny script. Treat yourself. Story revolves around the time talking movies changed Hollywood.
A lot of iconic musical numbers and choreography from this film. make Em Laugh, Good Morning. You really need to check out the film Gene Kelly was always Brilliant. A lesser known f is It's Fair Weather but he choreographed a dance routine on Roller Skates that is astonishing and even better than the 70s roller craze. I'm still amazed by it but Kelly was extreme athletic and always showed it on screen.
Fantastic and classic MGM musical. You should watch 'Make 'em Laugh' from the same movie with Donald O'Connor doing an AMAZING dance routine. There are so many great musicals just from MGM alone. You should also watch the Cab Calloway/Nicholas Brothers number from 'Stormy Weather' also Dorothy Dandridge singing 'That's Love' from Carmen Jones
From the same movie good morning is also good when I was kid in the 60s and 70s they used to play it as theme song for there morning show on am radio which my folks used to listen to for weather in the morning .
Haha - I can imagine someone googling "Singin' in the rain movie scene" and accidentally clicking on that scene from 'A Clockwork Orange'...and thinking "Is THAT Gene Kelly? Wait...what does he have on his nose??"...
You guys have GOT to do, "Well, Did You Evah" from "High Society"! Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra are the best! It's also a great movie with fast, snappy dialogue. Also, "On the Town" with Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Jules Munshin performing the song, "New York, New York. Not to mention, "My Kind of Town (Chicago Is)" from "Robin and the 7 Hoods", which also starred several members of the Rat Pack. An American in Paris, Mary Poppins, My Fair Lady, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Camelot, Fiddler on the Roof, Kiss Me Kate, West Side Story (the movie from the 60s), the list goes on. You guys are in for a beautiful ride!
Thanks for your reaction to this clip from 1952. I last saw this movie many years ago and oi I remember correctly the song and its title bear no relationship to the overall plot of the movie which takes the same title. Gene Kelly starred with Debbie Reynolds (the famous mother of Star Wars' Carrie Fisher, and mother and daughter died just a hours apart in December 2016. Also starring in Singin In the Rain was another great comic song and dance man of the time Donald O'Connor. I would highly recommend you check out a comedy skit on this clip that was performed on British TV by legends Morcambe and Wise years later. By all accounts Gene Kelly had seen the skit and he really loved it
There's a good movie called What A Way To Go. It stars Shirley Maclaine and follows her through a string of husbands. Dick Van Dyke (who was in Mary Poppins), Paul Newman, Gene Kelly, Robert Mitchum and Dean Martin. It's a fun movie.
The more you learn about Gene Kelly, the more amazing he was. Drove himself like a fury in everything he did.
Very intelligent man as well! I saw him in a couple of interviews, and he was extremely articulate and clear-thinking.
He And Fred Astaire As Many Dancers Of The Time Were Madding About Doing It Right
I have a record of Gene kelly when nobody knew him from 1928.
The girl at the beginning of the scene is Debbie Reynolds... she was actually born in El Paso Texas... and was the momma of Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia of Star Wars fame).
It was done in one take. He had pneumonia and 103 fever while filming this scene. Gene Kelly is known for this song and this movie. It's iconic film history. He was an extremely talented singer, dancer and actor.
Now watch " Stormy Weather" (1943 sll blsck cast )
The tap dance performance of the Nicolas Brothers revered as the greatest ever caught on film. Michael Jackson gave them the highest praise as a major influence.
That is so sweet and lovely of your grandchildren! Very perceptive! "Out of the mouth of babes..." right!? Merry Christmas to you and them! :=)
One of my favorite movies. Love General Kelly and this song. Greetings from Lima, Perú.
Hard to believe that Gene Kelly was sick as a dog when he filmed that scene. One of several iconic songs from that movie.
Not to mention that Donald O'Connor (one of his co-stars) was an inveterate alcoholic and drank through every one of his scenes, including some stellar dance performances.
YES! They say he had a fever over 103.0 while filming this scene!
The movie is a must watch. Gene was a very athletic, but also graceful dancer. You have to watch Gene and Jerry the Mouse (from the Tom & Jerry cartoons) dance together from the movie Anchors Aweigh. You will love it. Loved this. ❤️✌️

"Singin' in the Rain" (the movie) is one of my all-time favorite movies! (and not just "favorite musicals", but favorite movies overall. Classic!)
Love him and love all old classic movies!
Gene Kelly is my absolute favorite singer/dancer from my youth! 💜
The scenes in this movie where he dances a few times with Donald O'connor are absolutely classic
Great reaction! some info from Wikipedia:

@@nikwalters1029 yes!! That's the one. And ty for giving the name.

I've seen a reactor react to Singing in the Rain last week from Ashleigh Burton. She has been reacting to movies for about a year now.
This is the most iconic scene in the movie, but the best by far is "Make 'em Laugh!", followed by "Good Morning!" I definitely recommend watching the whole movie, it's one f the best of the d movie musicals.

He was an amazing dancer.
Gene Kelly was an amazing entertainer. He was a master at drama and comedy and a great singer and dancer.

You should check out the first Danny Kaye and Vera Ellen dance number in the movie "White Christmas". Such talented dancers and singers.
White Christmas is an incredible movie, always on my list of Christmas classics.
YES - my favorite scene!

The greatest movie musical ever made. Period. Story is that Gene Kelly had a 101 fever when he performed this dance in the rain.
Love this one. This era of movies and musicals is definitely a rabbit hole to go down. From the movie "White Christmas" you can watch the first scene with Bing Crosby singing "White Christmas" or a funny one "Sisters" with Vera Allen and Rosemary Clooney.

Made in the fifties, set in the twenties with music from the twenties. A very fun movie.
Glad that you liked this one. I love the song Make ‘Em Laugh performed by Donald O’Connor. Both he and Gene Kelly were very athletic dancers.
MJ was a fan of Gene Kelly. He studied his dance style and incorporated into his dances.
One of the greatest movie ever! Thank ya'll for this!😃💯👍
The whole movie is incredible!! Just joyful and fun/funny, incredible talent. You'll love it. This is literally one of the most famous scenes in all of movie history, but there are many other great singing/dancing scenes in this movie that are also iconic. Gene Kelly also co-directed the movie. Go for it!
If you want to see a really good old movie you should watch "Sunset Blvd"
This is a great movie. Everytime it comes on TCM, I watch it. Also "Sound of Music",
"Seven Brides for Seven Brothers",
"The unsinkable Molly Brown",
"Meet me in St. Louis"
"The Wizard of Oz",
" Calamity Jane",
"On moonlighf bay",
"By the light of the Slivery moon"
"Westside Story"
There are so many more great movie musicals.
@@johnbattles1002 Yes! All are so good. Isn't it hard to name just a few when there are so many!
I believe this dance scene s rated the #1 dance scene in movies even today.
Check out another oldie....Ray Bolger singing If I only had a brain in The wizard of Oz.......such a great song and scene in the movie!
An iconic song and dance from a great movie. ❤❤❤❤❤
I think y'all should check out the whole movie. It's one of my all-time favorites. I think y'all would enjoy it.
All time great Gene Kelly top of his game.
You so need to see the movie. In context, this is just . . . distilled joy.
He had a fever of 109 degrees and was told to go home and rest but Gene declined and did this song in one take!... much respect!
He was sick that day (a really bad cold) and worried he’d catch pneumonia in all that water. Luckily, he didn’t.
Nice giy's. I watched this movie with my mom many times. If it's on I have to watch. Enjoy!!!😃🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
This movie is in my top 5 musicals ever.
Singing in the rain was written well before the movie and numerous performers did it. They were trying to find the right combination and script for it. Their final choice was definitely a masterwork.
Great film
Gene did this with a 105 temperature, that's dedication!
KELLY DID THIS WITH A FEVER OF 103---------ONE TAKE ---------------PERFECTION.----------------MJL, 76 Y/O
Please watch the full movie. You’ll love it!!!
the movie is fun as fuck! and very meta if you like movie history. i've enjoyed tons of movies in my time, many of them on the big screen at revival theaters. for some reason it took me years to see this, but got to see it at the castro theater in sf, and it was such a spectacle.
I promise.
Great movie and dance. Another fave from my youth was Gene Kelly in Brigadoon "Go Home With Bonnie Jean".
Great reaction! This is an all time classic scene and you nailed it.
One of the all-time great movies ! ......
Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire are both legends. Know one worked harder than these men.
He is in LOVE. You will do anything when your head is in the clouds.
This scene (and really the whole movie) never fails to make me laugh and smile. This is possibly the first and most meta film ever made! ;)
Another great dance number is the barn raising scene in the movie "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". One of my favorites.
One of my all time favorites too. Love the scene where all the brothers dance
This was a great movie about the change from Silent to Talkie movies with Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor.
Thanks for showing this amazing scene. Forgot how awesome it was. ❤
From the same movie good morning is also good when I was kid in the 60s and 70s they used to play it as theme song for there morning show on am radio which my folks used to listen to for weather in the morning .
I love how there's nothing too complicated about this no. Its just about a man having a good ol' day and don't care that its raining🥰
That was just one scene; the movie was full of great sequences. Nice reaction, guye!
He, also, tap dances on roller skates in a movie and it's REALLY amazing!
Its always Fair Weather is the movie.
He had a cold during this filming.. awesome dancer and singer💖💖😻😻
Back in the day, actors had to be able to act, sing, and dance. Old movies are the best, I prefer them over what Hollywood puts out today.
Gene Kelly was amazing those were the days
By all accounts Gene Kelly had seen the skit and he really loved it
Most actors back in the day, could dance, sing,as well as act.
This movie is considered the best musical film ever!
There's a good movie called What A Way To Go. It stars Shirley Maclaine and follows her through a string of husbands. Dick Van Dyke (who was in Mary Poppins), Paul Newman, Gene Kelly, Robert Mitchum and Dean Martin. It's a fun movie.
