I think the word instinct(s) would be of better use than mind. In fact, I would argue that Conrad is discussing how instincts subvert the order of the mind. A very interesting comparison can be made with H. G. Wells The Island of Dr. Moreau. Both explore the uneasy relationship humans have with their instincts, their barbaric selves and how the veneer of civilization can so easily be stripped away. I do not sense that Conrad's attitudes about the natives is automatically superior. Many of the descriptions are full of admiration. What is the Horror after all but the realization that whites or blacks are pretty much the same and that the concept of civilization is an illusion. The natives obviously understand that better than the white. Of course, the proof of all this is the devastation of the Great War, occurring 13 years after the publication of this book.

I think HoD is a commentary on humanity and inhumanity. It's dressed-up as a voyage of discovery (both literal and metaphorical). It's both a physical and meta-physical journey. While Conrad definitely seems to have written a damning endictment of unchecked rapacious colonialism in all its barbarity, Marlow (the novella's narrator) is often disarmingly ambivalent.

Not having the sense that accent depends on place to place. Understanding is important not the accent.
