- In this Rare Cars documentary, we go in depth into the history of one of the most overlooked and forgotten supercars of all time, the spiritual successor the Ford GT40, the Spectre R42.
This car has largely been forgotten by history, but it is an absolute shame that it has been because it is one of the most interesting supercars of the golden era of 1990's supercars.
Note, we are NOT historians. If we got a fact wrong in our video please let us know!
I had a TVR back in the mid 90s and one of the events organised by the TVR club was a factory visit to Spectre. Great day seeing the cars in production and learning about them. The harbour shots in your video were taken around Poole Harbour close to where the factory was located in Poole, Dorset, UK.
What's awesome is the fact this car was free DLC for 1998's Need For Speed III Hot Pursuit.
Now that is a cool fact!
Diablo headlights. I KNEW they looked familiar! That was a bombshell. The spectre r42 was amazing, thanks for the video
Glad you enjoyed it! It is funny seeing all the cars back then that used parts from others. I think the Pagani Zonda used taillights from a bus LOL
@rarecars3336 both the Zonda n F1 used taillights frm a Bova Futura
Always learning about something new here. Cheers
Yes! I try and keep the cars fresh and fun to cover
I'd rather have a 90s supercar than the spaceships of today.
Good stuff! I wish the algo would have recommended your channel before now!
Glad you were able to find it now at least! Thanks for watching!
I always thought they were Mercedes Benz rear lights. I didnt see that one coming 😂
Hah they do sorta look like R129 tail lights
Just like the rest, Brickland, DMC, Bradley, they had an idea, but small clientele, and low funding doomed them .
I remember seeing a R42 cruising up I-95 North of Philadelphia in the mid 90s. If l hadn't seen an article about it in a car magazine l wouldn't have knew what it was. I was driving my 71 Ghibli SS (that l still have) and we exchanged waves. I have a car collection and go to lots of shows but that was the only Spectre l've ever seen. Every car l own is a driver, no matter how rare or valuable it is. Last year l completed a 7 year saga of restoring a basket case 1975 Countach. After finally getting it assembled and running l spent two years and several flatbed rides sorting it out. In the last year l've put 2800 miles on it. I love it because it's constantly trying to kill me lol! I love driving old cars, with bad brakes, poor handling, dangerous aero at high speed and big horsepower it requires skill to drive them fast. It's a fantastic rush.
Wow that is an awesome story and some great cars you have - I would love to own an R42 some day just because they are so quirky and cool! Good on you for driving them as they SHOULD BE!
My car is for sale? see video on youtube under dettling sports car. It is the only one in the world and it's going cheap.
Nice presentation. 👍🏻
Never heard about this car
I never knew about it until a few years ago either, such a cool car!
I saw this at a car show in the UK, I might even have a poster print of it. I thought it was going to be featured in a film.
It was. RPM, starring David Arquette released in 1998. He shows the title sequence of the movie at 1:06. ua-cam.com/video/mQVCLZn1-qE/v-deo.html
It was...a terrible 1997 movie called RPM, did you watch this video at all? LOL
90% of this video is clips from the movie, INCLUDING the intro/TITLE
What game is that at end of this video. I must know. Never heard of this car before or seen it in a game so I would love to know what game that is please. Love your videos too. New subscriber and watching all 23 rn.
the diablo also had rear lights from a bus
This is true!
If you've ever worked on one...they were pretty crudely made.
"Shims"'galore, in just about everything to offset the terrible tolerances
Do you have a Panoz roadster video it seems like it would your style
Thank you
Do a video on the Ascari KZ1
I remember those cars from the game gran tourismo 2 for playstation. The only place I'll ever see them probably lol. The newer McLarens are more ubiquitous though. I guess not as exclusive
Looks very much like the Mossler GT would be based on this car.
Not even close. The Mosler MT900, "GT" being a trim variation, has a totally different frame, as Mosler specialized in composite frames and bodies to help keep the weight absurdly low. The "900" in "MT900" is how much the car weighed in Kilograms or 1980lbs. The heaviest version the MT900 was the MT900s at 2450lbs.
I agree, mosler looks like a rip off
R42 - MR2 😂
Does anyone remember Joss jp1 from Australia
I like the fact that it came with a ford V8 😊
cool
Honda Legend Rückleuchten.
I'm not sure the R42 deserves to be compared to things like the McLaren F1, It's more comparable to a TVR (I used to work for Spectre)
Very Dodge M4S or vice versa?
I too, always thought that about the M42
Chrysler built the M4S in 1981
Hell, the movie The Wraith was in 1986,
WAY before the M42 was even a thought
BTW, I want whatever he was on, if he thought this thing in ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM resembled the GT40, or ANY sort of resemblance/homage/progression
I’ve got a GT50 Hot Wheels
Jaguar XL200?? Or 220?
Looks like the wraith car its an old Charlie Sheen movie
Good Eye!
How bout the gt90 still think that's a sexy car.. Has panels from space shuttle round engine bay or it melt.
The GT90 is a super cool car, really is a shame then never made it to production
@@rarecars3336 ya totally loss for car people round the world, but there is 1.
Ruf😉gives me a chubby 👍🏻🇺🇸
It's Testarossa, not Testarosa.
Do a video when Ford spanked Ferrari with the GT40
It's on the list!
Testarossa and F40 were 80s cars. Not 90s
Both were sold into the 90s
@@rarecars3336 they are being sold now. Maybe we should call them 2000s cars
Well the F40 production ended in 1992, so it's both a 1980s and 1990s icon. And the testarossa's production ended in 1996
Utterly forgettable looks, cheap detailing.
Really? This thing looks like a Nascar.
