The Americans may have made a mistake because Belgium has 3 languages:
French, Dutch and German.
The german speaker are minor compared to the Dutch and French speakers.
It was probably a Frenchmen who tried to convince an American that he invented them

The oldest recipe we have for what would be definitively considered "french toast" (bread soaked in egg and fried) was written in the 15th century by Martino de Como, an Italian. So you are correct that its origins are not French, but the people who invented it were Italians/Romans, and definitely didn't have French names.

As a Belgian I’ve never understood why Americans call it French fries
because the first americans to try them were dumb and thought the belgian people were french

As a Belgian, I can confirm that calling fries/chips 'French fries' is one of the best ways to royally piss us off. Just call it fries then, that's also just shorter so it's not that hard!

Despite its name, the French fry is not French. The origins of the French fry have been traced back to Belgium, where historians claim potatoes were being fried in the late-1600s.

If you want to have more voice within the British government, fight for it, but independence is a silly nationalist cause. As I said, look at the Balkans, they were once united in Yugoslavia, if they had continued like this and not fought for foolish ethnic reasons they would still be relevant.

in the netherlands we sell 3 types.
Type 1 : franse frietjes (french fries) those are the thin tastleless crap mcD and every other fastfood sells.. very thin, and generally made from mash.
Type 2 : patat (fries) those are of medium thickness and can be made of plain sliced potatoe or from mash.. quality varies..
Type 3 : vlaamse frieten (flemish fries) those are ALWAYS made from fresh potato, sliced and baked on the spot.. (non refrigerated) and nice and thick.. so they actually still have some potato taste.. the best kind of fries.
Oh and ofcourse I want mayonaise with it.. no no no frietsaus and no not that disguisting yellowish "american frietsaus" proper belgium mayonaise, if you absolutely want something else : some peanutsauce or beef stew sauce is allowed too.
And certainly absolute no ketchup.. ketchup does belong on a burger.. not on my fries..
