يَصْلَى to burn or to roast. from the root ص ل ي (to burn). صَلَّى from the root ص ل و means to pray. نار ذات لهب : Fire of [blazing] flame. A play on his name. The mataphor means "a fire which is raging and blazing" or a "fire full of flames"
تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ Perish the hands of Abu Lahab is an Arab way of saying may Abu Lahab perish. A part of the body is used to refer to entire person. Akin to the English way of asking someone's "hand" in marriage. تبا : a curse word meaning damn or perish. وَتَبْ at the end means "and he is perished". This is not a simple repitition. The first تَبْ is a damnation and a curse upon Abu Lahab. The second تَبْ signifies that he is indeed perished. The ayah means "May Abu Lahab perish and in fact he has perished" coz once Allah damns a person then he is for sure damned. اغنى : to avail or to be of use ( from the root غ ن ي ) ( تبَّت and اغنى are both past tense verbs that are being used to describe events that will take place in the future. In Arabic this implies a certainty of the events ie the event is most definitely certain to occur.) مال : wealth and assets. كسب : to earn or to acquire.
Abu and Umm are used metaphorically by Arabs to mean "doer or possessor of". If a particular attribute is preponderant in a person, then in order to highlight it, the word abu (father) or umm (mother) is prefixed to it. For example, Abu Lahab, (literally father of flames) means the possessor of flames or a man of fiery temperament or also one who is the possessor of a ruddy complexion. Likewise, Abu Jahl (father of ignorance) means a very ignorant man, Abul khair (father of goodness) means a man who is a great doer of good & Abush-sharr (father of evil) means a very wicked man. Umm Jameel means a lady who possesses great beauty. She was the wife of Abul Uzza aka Abu Lahab. Her real name was Arwa bint Harb - the daughter of Harb ibn Umayya, a chief of Mecca and also sister of Abu Sufyan. (In the Middle East and Greece, the idiomatic expression “the mother of all ---” has been used to describe the biggest, most extreme or ultimate examples of various things for more than two thousand years. However, it wasn’t a common phrase in the United States until Iraq dictator Saddam Hussein uttered his famous line about “The mother of all battles” shortly before the First Gulf War in 1991.)
حمالة : carrier (feminine) حطب wood. جِيدٌ : a beautiful and slender neck حَبلٌ : rope مسد : a tightly twisted rope made from palm fibre . حطب wood. Hatab is used figuratively to refer to slander, calumny and gossip. All sins that can ignite fitnah and strife. Umm Jameel the wife of Abu Lahab, (was beautiful hence called Umm Jameel) belonged to a rich family and like her husband, her animosity towards the Prophet (s) had exceeded all limits. However, she never demonstrated this enmity openly but she secretly and habitually engaged in all kinds of hostile activities against him. For example, the Holy Prophet used to go the Ka‘bah to pray every night and knowing this, she used to spread thorns on the road in order to injure him. Moreover, she used to circulate all kinds of false rumours against him. It was in reference to this ugly vice of hers that the Holy Quran gave her the title of hammalatal hatab (literally the bearer of firewood) which figuratively means a bearer of slander or false rumours. This metaphor is used because a person who stokes the fire of rage, hatred, strife and warfare with false tales is really putting fuel in the fire so that it will burn more fiercely. Ultimately she and Abu Lahab were destined to roast in Hellfire fueled by their evil.
