I shuuudder at the thought of receiving that thing he had which was more like a curse than an illness from the wheel of life. How awful must it be to have lived back then with no cure available to them for that.. Yet it exists now, Hundreds of years too-late. : //

I can't imagine how heartbreaking it was for Baldwin to see his kingdom fall apart from his bed, unable to do anything properly.. must've hurt him more then the Leperosy ever could

The fact that he learned to ride and fight with his left arm and didn't let it become a crutch is fantastic
I was wondering if “learning to ride with his left hand” is a mistake. As a left handed swordsman, he would have had to control his horse with his right hand. All other right handed warriors controlled their horses, and still do, with their left hand. So being a left handed horseman was the norm, and controlling his warhorse with legs, and right hand disabled by his condition, would indeed have been exceptional.

Baldwin IV, called the Leper, was King of Jerusalem from 1174 until his death in 1185. He was admired by his contemporaries and later historians for his willpower and dedication to the Latin kingdom in the face of debilitating leprosy, which eventually left him blind and unable to use either his hands or his feet.

"I won a great victory when I was sixteen at that moment I felt like I would live a hundred but now I know I shall not see thirty "
- Baldwin Iv
None of us know our end, really, or what hand will guide us there. A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power. When you stand before God, you cannot say, "But I was told by others to do thus," or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice. Remember that.
It's amazing how a young man like Baldwin could be responsible for a whole nation and was great at it. So strong and we'll respected.

Despite the fear of it,leprosy/Hansen’s disease is generally not easily transmitted to otherwise healthy people, often taking prolonged (weeks to months) and close quarter contact. My mom and I watched kingdom of heaven for the first time last night. Tremendous movie and what a great king
I had never seen the extended version of Kindgom of Heaven until a couple weeks ago. I didn’t know it existed.
One thing that never made sense to me was why Sibylla slowly began to lose her mind, cut her hair and hide away after his death. She knew it was coming, but I always assumed it just hit her really hard. Well, come to find out there is an entire storyline that wasn’t in the original movie about her son!!!!!
It showed Sibylla‘s son sporadically throughout the movie, Then when Baldwin died, he became king but she was his executor. At one point, he puts his hand over a candle. It shows it burned, but he wasn’t in pain. There is also a scene in this video where the priest notices that hot wax burns his hand, but the child doesn’t notice it. They then diagnosed him with leprosy. Sibylla freaked out. Then, while holding him while he fell asleep she inserts some drops into his ear, killing him. So she killed her own son, the King. So later in jail when Reynald asks Guy “the boy is dead?” he was asking about Sibylla’s son, NOT Baldwin.
I do not understand why that storyline was cut from the movie, it made it hit way harder!!!!!
It maybe because it wasn’t historically accurate, hell, they totally changed how younger Baldwin died. It was some kind of disease but it probably didn’t have anything to with his uncle’s leprosy. There was no story about a candle or him not feeling any pain either. It was probably the director’s decision because the movie definitely bashes the Crusaders. So in a sense (in the movie) god wanted Jerusalem to fall so hard that first Baldwin IV gets leprosy and dies, after that his nephew has to live the same fate as well.
@@katlablessed This movie is a lot fiction than reality and is very historically incorrect.
I think that Edward Norton's portrayal of Baldwin IV was one of his finest performances. The whole story of The Leper King is fascinating and remarkable.
People should learn from King baldwin and Saladin that there is an code of honour even with your Enemies.
He was a true Christian king
He was a great king everyone admired him
this is a judgement statement at best, the people that wrote stories about great people were noble people they would have never talked to the common people to find this out
@@tedtalksautomation8673 yea but most people's enemies don't usually tell the same stories, Saladin had a massive respect for Baldwin, when he took Jerusalem he made it a point that any defamation or ransacking of Baldwin's resting place, belongings or memorabilia and items was punishable by death to his own army and he paid his respects to his grave everytime he could
Better than reading a chapter in my textbook

Not for your grades ;)
Great information. What a pity that courageous Leper king had to endure so much burden. Liam Neeson did a good portrayal of King Baldwin in 'The Kingdom of Heaven'. And rather than fighting with realtives, they should have selected the eldest sister as the next ruler. Anyway, then came another great ruler, Richard the Lion heart, who also died childless, at Jerusalam.
I believe Richard was homosexual. Refer to The Lion in Winter with Peter O’Toole as Henry and Katherine Hepburn as Eleanor of Aquitaine. You’ll see a young James Bond and Hannibal Lechter, as well. Highly recommend
