Yes! Me too. I was in my 20s when it first came out around 1978-79 or so. I wanted to be just like her when I got old. Now I am nearing 70 and surprisingly I’m not far off! I went back to the movie theater two more times that week to see it again. Over the years, Wore out the video tape and one dvd. It’s a great gift to give people. I love Cat Steven’s music too. The music really wraps itself in the story.
@@JM-zk9ou Cute, ya, it's one of those love it or hate it movies. My mother, at the time, thought it was absolutely "disgusting"! To me - at 24, it gave me hope: That if it takes a lifetime to find the right guy, there is still hope! As long as he looks 20! Reality has set in since I was young. I am now 68! Do I see myself w a 20 something now?! HELL, no! But I DO see myself loving Harold and Maude til I die. Peace out people!
This woman has been a tremendous role model for the film making industry and a delight to many a heart!! Thank you Ruth! She was amazing in Rosemary’s baby!!!❤️
Loved her! I was so lucky. I used to go regularly to see TV Shows filmed in the 70's - and once on Rhoda - there she was...playing Carlton, the Doorman's mother! She was just HYSTERICAL! Incredible casting!
Don’t forget that Ruth and her husband were also great screenwriters. They penned several of the Tracey-Hepburn movie classics. And it’s not widely known that they were integral in helping Streisand develop her characterization of Fanny Brice in Funny Girl.
Rumor has it, Garson Kanin didn’t direct the performance that made streisand a legend. She supposedly was taking direction from someone she knew earlier, I think Alan Miller.
What a terrific underrated actress and writer Ruth Gordon was. She was terrific in an episode of "Columbo", great in "Rosemary's Baby", "Harold and Maude", "Where's Poppa", an episode of "Taxi" - - the list goes on and on.
Hear! Hear! Ruth Gordon was a wonderful actress, I want to find her books now, have you read any? I'm struck by how glamorous she was as herself and amazingly youthful too - according to Wiki she was born in 1896!
7:00 You can just see Woody Allen writing multiple scripts in awe for future movies and comedy bits as he listens to the truly original and masterful Ruth Gordon
Fabulous, sparkling woman, I think it would have been quite something to know her in real life. I love her style too, so glam. Youthful too - she'd have been pushing 70 here and looks younger than Woody Allen!
Saw her on Columbo and decided to look her up. Heard her name thrown around for years... thought she was radio but that was another Gordon. She's feisty!!
It is not widely known that two years after this Cavett telecast, Ruth Gordon’s husband, author Garson Kanin, came out with the non-fiction book Tracy and Hepburn: An Intimate Memoir, and Hepburn read it and became very upset. She decided never again to communicate with her neighbor Garson Kanin. I don’t know if Hepburn remained willing to give Kanin’s wife Ruth Gordon the time of day. But I know Hepburn never forgave Kanin and cut him off. They all continued to live in their neighboring Manhattan homes for many years after the 1971 publication of Kanin’s evidently inaccurate book. This Cavett video captures the innocent year of 1969 when none of the aging neighbors (It was the Turtle Bay section of Manhattan) knew about the hostility or the hurt feelings that lay on the horizon.
Never seen Rosemary's Baby before (although I've heard about it a LOT) but just knowing Ruth is in it and seeing this scene makes me want to watch it! LOL
Ruth, you're still as relevant today as always. I bet Trump could use some Saniflush...he seems all bound up and full of hot air lately. Thanks for that timely tip!
She was a sweetheart and a fabulous actress she was in my favourite Columbo...try n catch me they don't make actors like her Bet Davis Katherine Hepburn and the great Spencer Tracey ♥️ ❤️ ❤❤
Obviously Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort are amazing in Harold and Maude, but please let's not overlook how fantastic Vivian Pickles is. The more times I watch Harold and Maude, the more I enjoy Vivian's performance. "I even find the question distasteful." "Harold, puh-lease." Also, the priest is wonderful (especially his monologue), and the soundtrack, and the script. And the directing.
A good talk show host knows when to shut up. Nobody is going to change the channel during this monologue. Its actually reminiscent of Dodie Goodman, who's daffy and stream of conscience talk show chatter was deemed per gold by Paar, Griffin, Carson etc. As for the talented Gordon, her career spanned Broadway, movies and television and her theatrical style served her well in every roll, every medium of entertainment for 65 plus years.
Did anyone else notice how Woody Allen wouldn't sit down in his chair on the Dick Cavett show until she had sat down first? Who does that? Very nice gesture and I have never seen it before. Chivalry is on its last legs.
In other words, in those days as it is today (I don't give a flying F....about me too although it did make a difference for the victims, it won't change the way actors and actresses get chosen for a role) unless you get down on your knees and blow the director, the producer or the crew, you won't get the role. Indeed, to wait until you are well into your fifties to get the big role in both Rosemary's Baby and Harold and Maude means that she didn't sell herself short and that for me is what I call integrity. Bravo Maude...I mean Ruth.
Her performance in Harold and Maude changed my life in 1973. Thank you dear Ruth/Maude
SiliconValley Attorney Ditto. Love her and the film.
She's cute, Liked her VOICE and PERSONALITY!! Barbara Mozie 😉😀

I went to see Harold and Maude at the theater with a friend when it came out. I loved it. She absolutely hated it. 🤣

She was so wonderful. Scary wonderful.
She has been my role model for decades. Her memory is a blessing.
me too
One of my all-time favorite actresses. She was hilarious even in dramatic roles. Such a spunky little thing!
Only 5' she was, a real pocket rocket. Lovely, vivacious woman and talented actress. May she RIP.
💖
What a class act this woman was..
She never knew how old she was. And that's what's great.
Perfect comment!
Well said and well put !! :-)
This woman has been a tremendous role model for the film making industry and a delight to many a heart!! Thank you Ruth! She was amazing in Rosemary’s baby!!!❤️
So cute, so sweet! So glad that Cavett knew exactly what to do and how she should be treated...just let her be Ruth! She was a true treasure..
Yes, it's a chat show host's dream to have a guest who can speak interestingly for any amount of time with the slightest prompt.
Cavett is well known for letting guests speak. But even he looked a bit flummoxed by her energy.
I just adore this woman.
I love Ruth Gordon, she is amazing actress!!!!
I have a notion to second that emotion !! :-)
I miss you Ms. Ruth. And your soooooo cute interviewing yourself!😁
OMG! One of the greatest. Those were the days
One of the best actresses ever!!!
One of my favorite actress , I loved her on COLUMBO “ The night I was murdered”
Formidable actress
absolute chilling performance in Rosemary's Baby
Loved her! I was so lucky. I used to go regularly to see TV Shows filmed in the 70's - and once on Rhoda - there she was...playing Carlton, the Doorman's mother! She was just HYSTERICAL! Incredible casting!
"May I say a word..." She was so adorable.
She certainly enjoys talking !
My favourite actress of all time.
She's fabulous, one of my favorites! Thanks for sharing❤👍!
Harold & Maude...was brilliant....

Just watched this movie and absolutely loved it. She was just so full of life. Very uplifting movie. So glad I stumbled upon it.😊

glamdolly20 I'm actually reading one of her books called "Ruth Gordon An Open Book"
check it out
+Lydia -- she had a small but memorable role as Natalie Woods' kooky mother in "Inside Daisy Clover."
She was excellent in the Any Which Ways too
Noe Berengena interesting side note: Natalie Wood named her godmother to her first born, Natasha.
Ruth Gordon was brilliant.
absolutely
I would have loved her as my grandma ... she's so funny 😄 loved her in ROSEMARY'S BABY!
Ladies and gentleman God doesn't make people like Ruth anymore. One of a kind.
She seemed like a fun lady 😂
Unforgettable actor. Amazing.
My gramma b.1906 was a little pistol very like Ruth.
Some people you dont get tired of hearing talk. She was an original.
I can picture Ruth and Katherine Hepburn talking to each other in their front yards.
7:00 You can just see Woody Allen writing multiple scripts in awe for future movies and comedy bits as he listens to the truly original and masterful Ruth Gordon
Amazing actor!!
Such a wonder!!!
Fabulous, sparkling woman, I think it would have been quite something to know her in real life. I love her style too, so glam. Youthful too - she'd have been pushing 70 here and looks younger than Woody Allen!
She was 74 years old.
She does look great here.
Oh how I miss Ruth! So good! I love seeing her with my all time favorite Woody Allen! What a treat!
spectacular
They don't build them like that anymore LOL hahaha
"May I say a thing about Thornton Wilder?" Wow...imagine watching a late night chat show and hearing that line? Damn...
I loved this view of Miss Gordon.
Thanks!
She literally took over the show 😂😩😂👍
Cavett was thinking, "Great, an easy night tonight!" Plus, Woody Allen wasn't exactly lost for words...
She was great on Columbo, too!!
Love her !!!
I remember my mom and friend went to see R.B. in 1968 in Davis, CA: said she thought Ruth was "hilariously funny" as Minnie
Saw her on Columbo and decided to look her up. Heard her name thrown around for years... thought she was radio but that was another Gordon. She's feisty!!
Ruth Gordon was hilarious actress 🏆 mia farrows first 🎥 21 yold Rosemary Baby 🍼
Thank you for sharing this.
Woody must have admired her seeing these three wonderful people all of them
I love the look of sheer astonishment on Woody Allen's face. And he never manages to say a word, which is impressive.
Right on Ruth Gordon never seen this before l was 10 11 yrs old born in 59
Ruth was Fabulous.
RIP
Woody Allen's face! LOL!
🙂👍😂‼️ One of the most interesting, funny, endearing, compelling, personalities, ever! (😂Woody too!)
genius writer/actress

I know nothing other than I'd put my money on Garson Kanin rather than the very prickly Katherine Hepburn who could be extremely difficult
Never seen Rosemary's Baby before (although I've heard about it a LOT) but just knowing Ruth is in it and seeing this scene makes me want to watch it! LOL
A truly good chiller. Not gory, not disgusting: just a creepy, clever film that stays with you for the rest of your life.
She was great
Was also great as Philo and Orville's mom in Every Which Way But Loose.
Movie 🎥 how could I forget Rosemary's Baby
She is marvelous...she makes me laugh. I missed so much. I got some catching up to do.
Why didn't Woody ever make a movie with Ruth!?
she has a cameo in Annie Hall
Let's all go to the lobbly! Yesssss!
Ruth, you're still as relevant today as always. I bet Trump could use some Saniflush...he seems all bound up and full of hot air lately. Thanks for that timely tip!
Still very toned and trim
Love the intro!!
That’s the largest apartment I’ve ever seen! We don’t have places like that in Southern California. I doubt they do in New York either.
She really knew how to dress.
very chic
She was a sweetheart and a fabulous actress she was in my favourite Columbo...try n catch me they don't make actors like her Bet Davis Katherine Hepburn and the great Spencer Tracey ♥️ ❤️ ❤❤
I'm reading the book the movie covers the book very well so far .
She had that "old time" inflection in her voice that actors had in the early days of film. So cool.
Great !
Amazingly talented lady, still loved to this day.

I realize this may be incorrect now, but I really enjoyed seeing Woody Allen being completely spellbound by her on Dick Cavett!
also in a clint eastwood film any which way but loose
Jump Forty Four and the sequel any which way you can
love her
Did anyone else notice how Woody Allen wouldn't sit down in his chair on the Dick Cavett show until she had sat down first? Who does that? Very nice gesture and I have never seen it before. Chivalry is on its last legs.
Chivalry from Woody Allen most definitely.
Since 1915! Wow
Woody's face!!
I was 9 yrs old 68
She and Woody Allen are almost the same height ;)
Loved her! Creepy creepy!
Dick Cavett was the only intellectual talk show on television. The 70 was a long time ago.
Love her

My Mom resembled Ruth Gordon. Many people commented on it.

Stealing all my Oreos, crapping all over the place, 12 ribs my ass.
This woman never stops talking
But I have utmost respect for her great in columbo

And how she outshines Woody Allen. He is nothing and Ruth is everything.
