Of course, the HSS Mercedes-Benz W25 is a 1934-spec car. In 1936, Mercedes was using the W25K, which actually wasn't such a great car, and in fact, you were probably better off driving one of the Alfa Romeos that year. Those are Alfa Romeo 12C 36s (4.1-liter V12). The bodywork is also very similar to the 8C 35 (3.8-liter S-8); both are built on the same Tipo C chassis. The actual 12C 37 has a longer, lower profile to the bodywork, as well as a 4.5-liter V12, but it only raced twice in that form: the Coppa Acerbo (Pescara) and Italian GP (Livorno). The 12C 37 chasses were used to make the Tipo 312 and 316 in 1938-39, but in addition, with updated bodywork, ran with their original V12s in Formula Libre in South America. Those Auto Union V16s really do sound like spaceships to my ear, somehow. The 1934-spec W25 would have a 3.4-liter S-8, or possibly a 3.7-liter S-8. I'm not sure the 4.0-iter units really came in until 1935. The 1936-spec W25s had a 4.3-liter engine, while the W25Ks were equipped with 4.7-liter lumps. Well, the Auto Union has plenty of low-end torque to pull from any gear (627 ft-lb @ 2,500 rpm). I do hope at some point the mod gets its proper 5-speed gearbox. Yeah, a 2:39.8 is pretty darn good, really. Funny thing is, I'd say this track is more relentless than the Nordschleife. At least at the Nurburgring, you have places where you can breathe. Here...not so much. Old Spa in these cars though would be terrifying in a different way. Now, you can do that track with the old Ancienne Hairpin, the Malmedy Chicane, and the Stavelot Hairpin. Yeah, I'd say you've really one-upped yourself, or rather more than that, with this one. Go have that beer, and a lie-down. You've earned it.
Yeah the mod is nice but as you say its missing its 5-speed gearbox & the sound isn't great. Somebody did make a sound mod for it but never actually released it! It's still around 5 seconds off Rosemeyers fastest lap though but yeah I'm quite proud of that ngl 😁 Taking these to Old Spa isnt a bad idea actually, I forgot spa 😂 I still feel slightly tired from this one, I think I was still cooling down 3 hours after I had finished recording 😂. Thank you, I very much enjoyed that beer 😊
Nice content!
Thanks!
