7 Presbyterians in Lingít Aaní: The Origins of the Sitka Mission
Sitka’s Presbyterian mission began in 1878, a decade after the transfer, in a period of profound transition that culminated in the Alaska we know today. Most people, even now, accept the missionary account of this period, and of Native people, at face value. This paper will use period documents and the economic, social, geographic and historical context of southeastern Alaska in the late 1870s to show how missionaries created a myth, that is still current today.
