  • Do you feel a draft? Nope, it's not your in-laws coming to town (😬), you may just have a leaky window. For a cheap and relatively easy way to rid your room of this draft, we'll show you how to insulate windows with plastic film and how to insulate your windows for winter (in the knick of time, too).
In addition to keeping your home warmer during the winter, installing plastic insulation film over your leaky windows also works to keep cold air inside during the summer months. Putting window insulation film over windows is a smart idea if you want to reduce energy costs and keep out drafts during the colder seasons. Applying plastic insulation film to windows can actually cut the cost of your climate control bills up to 40%.
We know - plastic for windows sounds wild, but hear us out. You can essentially winterize your windows for very little cost, insulate your windows with minimal time or damage, and seal your windows for the winter before the day is done.
    Things you might need:
    1. Window Installation Kit
    2. Window Insulation Film
    3. Window plastic wrap
Watch our comprehensive instructional video in which we walk you through each of the simple steps for installing plastic film over your windows.

I’ve found that if you don’t apply the film perfectly to the double-sided tape, meaning there’s any wrinkle to it, it allows air in. And if the window is very drafty, the air squeezing through any small gap can pull the film away from the tape over time.

Thanks for showing the process. Your sealed windows at the beginning (minute 0.31) show a lot of moisture trapped...is this an issue for growing mold in the winter? Does it remain or dissipate? We're struggling with moisture on our double-glazed windows causing mold growth on the wood.

Need better semi permanent solution for a case of 14 windows in house. That's least $140 +air/purifier/ filter
needing clean air as result. And a pet or 2 - there goes the thin plastic. So an internal frame, thicker mil plastic -though it'll look like a construction zone due to diffused plastic, but would be a better suit. Could cost any where from 5x -10x as initial thin plastic = $500 >> $1000; could pay itself in about 5 yrs. Better warmer than colder esp not feeling a draft(s).

In any case, these kits have been sold for decades, and I have used them but this year I made simple wooden frames to stick the plastic to. Then should I need to open a window, I can pop it out.

You think that "air" will stop mold growth? I dont know where you live, but where I live there is so much moisture in the air outside it would probably make things worse. Mold likes dark, damp, wet warm spaces. I assure you the dead of winter is not going to cause mold growth. if there is a mist of clorox will shut it down PDQ.
