Am I the only one that found that drop amazingly satisfying. I appreciate these videos in general but man something very satisfying about seeing the catch
It was wonderful to see this and for me, a non beekeeper, to realise the intense sound difference of the swarm as it dropped into its new home and then you mentioned their sound after they’d settled….was just amazing. Thank you so much.
The noise of busy bees makes me so very happy! Beekeeping is truly my greatest joy on my farm. You have always inspired me and continue to do so! Thank you!
Well, i caught some empty new queen cups on an inspection 2, 3 weeks ago. Put a super on and some blank frames. Swarmed anyway into my neighbors yard while we were out of town. By the time we got home 30 to 40 minutes later they were gone. Good on you for catching yours... You inspire me to be a better beekeeper.
Same thing happened, 2 in the same tree about a week apart. That looked like a decent sized swarm. You are spot on in that just listening will tell you so much. Good tips on keeping swarms in a box. I did kill a Queen, had Mated Queens ordered so just replaced her and all is well.
Great job but don't forget about a water source old carpet laid out like a beach on irrigation areas during spring pollinization will have more bees drinking water then pollinizing blooms oh and till dandelions during bloom they will take over and attract more then bloom good luck and this is great I love humans like y'all
Mug up at the Honeystead. Good morning, everyone from central N.H. Apple blossoms in full bloom now with 40s- 90s for the next few days, crazy. The dynamic dual, nice oomphy looking bee suits. Only my 2nd season beekeeping and it is so amazing. Thanks for sharing
Swarms and catching them is what has piqued my interest the most in a bee-keeping course I am taking. Very informative video, but what struck me most is how much you love the bees. More people like this in the world, please!
Was it your longhive again? That's what they call being farmer, don't matter if its 🐔's to 🐄's or even honey 🐝's. 🤠Great pic of the bees on the rim that will make a nice desktop. I'll hear them do that when I go to put my frames back in and put the hive back together. I figured it was because I put a frame with the queen back in? Had my 1st hive for 2months now and still not seen her. I see eggs so she is in there, but ya I'll put a random frame in and that low tone roar will start unify and then over a few lessen in volume.🤠Got to watch my 1st full on waggle dance yesterday. 🤠 Ty for sharing your family time, Blessed Days...
I think I managed to get lucky, one hive didn't survive over winter, so in the process of cleaning it out I had a swarm form and take over the abandoned hive I was cleaning. I had a lucky break there, especially as right above it, I had a nuc with a few frames inside it getting ready to move into a brand-new hive! So, bar the honey jars, I think I'm mostly all set this year.
@@TheHoneystead Caught me unawares as well, I just thought surely, there are too, too many bees for this nuc!?? I might still move them yet, though, I haven't properly water proofed the hive they're in. So it's slowly disintegrating, fingers crossed that nothing happens...
That's a good size swarm. I thought I was on top of everything in my apiary yet 3 swarms so far. I was able to hive all 3 but each was a different situation. I really want to keep them from swarming but it's so much fun catching them. I add a frame of brood from another colony and that seems to anchor them. Good luck with your bees!

Yup, i had one the other day. The swarm was sitting in a tree in our garden. The trick with the listening to the bees after you caught them to know if there is the queen inside the box is a good idea! Thank you for sharing your wisdom! I have found that waiting for a couple minutes and watching how they fly is good too. They will start to move towards the box and if there are a few bees at the tree left they will start to fly to the box as well. It's a beautiful magical feeling and thing to catch a swarm.
Thanks for sharing so much information. I'm looking to get into bees (and I'm not very good at keeping it secret, hehe) soon. You share so much about their behaviors and social cues; you help me feel more confident in understanding the babies.
I can't believe that you mentioned duct tape. Congratulations on the new swarm catch but I have a interesting question and I hope you can kind of give me guidance on this one. Let’s say you have 6 acres of land out in the country and you’re starting up a bee sanctuary I forgot what they call that Avery something like that but to make a long story short let’s say you hear a guy in your 6 acres and he says my bees just swarmed on one of your trees but you caught it so what do you do then tell him that you caught a swarm or do you tell them losers weepers or what are you doing a situation like that do you let him take them or do you keep them because I think it’s open free game right? God bless you young lady once again congratulations for you and your mom and your family and friends stay safe✝️✝️✝️
For me… if I were the beekeeper, I’d speak with the neighbor and come up with a plan. I lean more on the line to want a good relationship with my neighbors!
Your mother is beautiful, you look so much like her. My heart becomes warm to see what a good job she did raising you and how your wisdom led you to follow her example. 2 smart and beautiful women.
Yep I’ve been super busy past two months, I kinda slacked off a bit myself. Needless to say, I’ve caught 4 swarm in 5 days last week. But girls look happy.
come to az we have 91% killer bees here, had a swarm land in my backyard tree. be guy came and got them but you can't have them as honey makers unless you have lots of land.
I was tending my bees this summer and I looked over my shoulder and saw a swarm of bees land on one of my empty hives and I walked over and was just going to put them in the trap hive I had right where they landed and when I walked up to them and they took off like I was Freddy Krueger and poof !! They were gone and never came back 😝
Are you preventing your bees from leaving, are you catching a neighboring swarm or are they wild bees just moving to a new place? Can you tell where a swarm originated?
Blessed are those who learn from the experienced ones send by our one and Only Lord Jezus..... God Bless you Ladies as you make a huge difference in tge world...... ❤Jezusa
Only thing I would do differently is to have another box on top of the bottom box that had a few frames so more go in and less likely to have them spill over the side
Well thank you for this video. I just caught my first swarm yesterday by watching this video. I do have a question for you…some of the bees are flying around where I caught them yesterday. I caught it and placed in a hive, let them settled until dark, stuck grass in opening then moved it to the “bee yard.” This afternoon there are some bees flying around where they had been left to settle. Is that ok?
Giving an open brood to a swarm actually is an old trick (I learned from my father), but NOT to make a new queen, but to prevent the swarm to get away from the new hive (it may happen). The bees will NEVER leave behind an open brood.
Now, what do you do if you have an empty hive bc you pick up bees next week and a swarm just moves right in? This will be our first time having bees and was not expecting a swarm to move in. Lol
Hi swarming in nature is .not the same as people who keep hives .a better way is preventing your hives from swarming in the first place .(Stepplar )harvesting the excellents ,reducing the bee numbers before they think about swarming ,adding to weak colonies .or increasing your hive numbers. Food for thought With a swarm after its caught and settled add some sealed frames of brood .This will engourage fast colony build up also forming the cluster more quickly enabling a more harmony to the colony ..reducing stress.. Most swarms have old or older bees . You need bees of all ages for a colony to expand efficiently .
@@TheHoneystead There's still bees hanging around inside the hive, I'm going to put in a frame of uncapped brood and maybe see if they'll make a new queen. I didn't see any more queens in the swarm I caught. It was my first swarm that I've ever caught and I was so bummed when I seen the queen dead 😭
