Please join LGHS and grand-niece Jennifer Taylor as she shares family stories of her great aunt, Mertha Fulkerson.
Jennifer Taylor is the eldest of Mertha's nieces and nephews. She (Jennifer) is the eldest of Mertha's nieces/nephews. Jennifer grew up in Highland Park and spent every Christmas with Aunt Mertha when she came home for the holidays. Her family vacationed in Ellison Bay every summer to spend time with Aunt Mertha at "The Clearing." Jennifer has been a full-time resident in Door County since 2017 and is currently the accountant for The Ridges Sanctuary. Jennifer sees this as her final and most fulfilling role, where she continues the mission that Mertha and Emma Toft began by creating "The Ridges Sanctuary" and "The Clearing" to preserve and promote nature's wonder. Tonight Jennifer will share stories and pictures of Mertha's life apart from her enduring devotion to Jens Jensen and The Clearing.
Mertha Fulkerson a Co-Founder of "The Clearing Folk Schoo"l with Jens Jensen influenced environmental preservation throughout the Northern Door. Mertha is credited with saving the fledgling school after Jensen’s death in some circles. Jennifer Taylor promises us that there is so much more to this iconic Door County Artist, Educator, Preservationist, and Environmentalist.
