The two transistors get so hot that it burns the soldering connections on the power supply board. Remove these transistors and screw their coolers to the metal plate at the back of the receiver. Use long wires for making the connections to the power supply board. This fixes the problem permanently.

Just bought one of these off eBay, the amp looks really clean and was advertised in fully working order,... I will get it hooked up over the weekend and see how she performs. After watching this I am hopeful of some impressive performance.. If not, I imagine much of the servicing you outline in this film will guide me through a resolve. Thank you for such a thorough and clear film. Regards, Jim UK

Thanks a lot for posting this video.
I bought a new CR-2020 in the 1970's which I put aside last year. It started to exhibit the relay kicking out problem which I have delayed dealing with but your video has inspired me to get on with the bulletin repair and whatever else it needs.

Thanks so much for this!!! I have a 1020 myself that I'll be servicing soon. Your detailed review of the service notes will help me get it going quickly, thanks again!

Thanks for the nice video.. I think you pointed at the wrong 22 Ohm 150 ma resistor to replace. Between the two arrows pointing out the 33 Ohm resistors to replace you'll see another asterisk showing the resistor mentioned in the service note. Apologies if this was note elsewhere below.. I didn't see it if it has been.

Wow! Talk about flashbacks! I bought a CR-1020 new in 1979, I think. Great receiver! The servo control on the tuning was a neat trick at the time. And, it always sounded fantastic. Unfortunately, the thief who broke into my apartment in 1982 took every bit of electronic equipment that I owned.

i think it's neat how cmf's happen with these amps and how well they hold up over time in comparison to what is put out today. that little doscovery tool is turning out to be a handy little piece. too bad it wasn't around even 10 years ago.
thanks for the vid ;-) always interesting to watch.

Hi. Got a 1020 that gives sparks in the speaker relay when Power off and a big pop in the speaker. Can’t figure out what is wrong. No DC at speakers and everything works well. Any idea please. ?

Hi, I have the same exact problem with my CR 1020! : Big pop when I shut it down. Have you figured the source of this problem yet?

    • @janjakobsen6184

@@robertberthiaume7301yes, there is a cap on the front power on/off switch, actually an antispark cap. Replaced and all fine now.

Is there a way to remove the cover from the relay? I have a cr420 that I suspect needs the contacts cleaned.

What resistors did you use? I understand they were 10 ohm, but what wattage rating? Thanks.

Not sure if you’ll see this comment but I just got one of these and everything works but the audio is very low. Also, the L side is very quiet compared to the R side. Someone recommended just cleaning the connections but wanted to get some more insight in case I need to do something with the internals? Hope you see this. Thanks!

Hello and thank you so much for these great videos.
I just check the service manual and it says that the measurement for the idling current should be between TP1 and 0. (so before the speaker relay).
I can get 10mV between these 2 points, however between E and 0 i have completely different readings. (-11mV left, 132mV right).
In addition the VR601 does not seem to affect the measurement between 0 and E.

I bought my Yamaha CR 1020 along with my Infiniti QB speakers back in the late 70s and I still have them except I need to get my Yamaha receiver worked on again the last shop that worked on it in San Diego. California didn’t do a good job about 10 years ago so I took it off-line completely and bought a new Receiver another Yamaha of course I’d like to get this one fixed properly by somebody knows what they’re doing. And I also need email tweeters or diaphragms. Either way for my QBs. Mine are messed up again I’m pretty hard on them I like listening to loud music for my music loud, but they need to be repaired. Cabinets probably need to be repaired as well. They are loose and start to get cracks in. The seams speakers are loose in the front grills as well where they mount. But I’ve also been looking for Yamaha CR 2020 receiver the big brother to my 1020 or big sister however, you want to look at it thinking about putting them in my garage here in Albuquerque New Mexico or live looking for answers. Thank you.

6:40 hummm......no one told me about this service bulletin. I had mine in for major repairs 3x since I bought it in 1979, and its a gift that keeps on giving. It's been in a locker with a bunch of records for eleven years at a total cost of around seven grand. Should have tossed the entire works, I would have been better off.

When checking at the test points as in this video the lowest I can get to is 6.5 mv,when checking at the speaker terminals its .24 mv. Does that mean anything significant or are the terminals a bad place to check?

I'm surprised you didn't change all the fusistors.

    • @Blueglow
      @Blueglow  7 років тому +1

Fusistors aren't necessarily a bad thing, you just don't want them operating anywhere near their power rating, which these in the service bulletin were. I'm not a fan of swapping parts for the sake of it, especially resistors if they are good. I tested all of them on those boards.

  • @johnsweda2999

where's the best place to look for schematics and bulletin reports cheers! did you not put a thermistor in considering you disabled resistor fuse functionality wouldn't it be better to have a thermistor installed.

Hi I'm a long time viewer of your channel as I'm a big audio enthusiast especially vintage hifi gear. I own a nice refurbished pioneer sa - 8500 and also an early 90's onkyo a-rv400 integrated amp which is currently stuck in standby mode I believe the protection relay and circuits for it are faulty. While it's not worth much it does sound good and I hate to just get rid of it so I was wondering if I could send it out to you for repair....that is if you feel it will be worth it. I'm not sure about how much a new relay and some caps would be but if you feel it won't be too expensive I'll send it out to you. Maybe you can feature it in a video!!! Thanks look forward to hearing back from you -Dennis Long Island, NY

I have a similar problem with an A-18 amplifier from Arcam, the audio is not working, mechanical pressure on the chassis amplifies the problem, you can clearly hear the relay noise.ua-cam.com/video/Psj8brhaSuY/v-deo.html
