We can come up with all sorts of convincing justifications to support non-vegetarian food. But, if we cannot feel compassion for all living creatures, if we are not sensitive enough to feel the pain and suffering of those innocent creatures lined up for death in slaughter-houses, what is the use of reading so many spiritual books and practicing yoga for years? Real spiritual flowering will happen only in the hearts of those who are compassionate and merciful.
Below are two quotes by Swami Sivananda Saraswati (Guru of Swami Chidananda Saraswati) regarding this subject:
"The law of Karma is inexorable, unrelenting and immutable. The pain you inflict upon another will rebound upon you and the happiness you radiate to another will come back to you, adding to your happiness."
"There is One Consciousness which has expressed itself in the form of the various beings, animate and inanimate. And this makes you one with all beings. Can you willingly and joyously cut your own fingers and cook them and eat them? Not knowing this oneness alone is the purpose of your coming again and again into the mundane plane (rebirth). You can know, feel and experience this oneness only when you stop injuring and hurting others and begin to love all as your own Self." ~ Swami Sivananda

Gurdjieff was asked this question and being a westerner himself like myself in similar climates, this resonates more so . Gurdjieff quotes - You would be right if our human existence was limited only to the spiritual, but it isn’t . Meat is necessary when there is hard physical work to be done, or in a very cold climate, or when edible plants cannot be found. Besides, our canine teeth as well as other biological characteristics show that our digestive system has been adapted by nature to assimilate meat. Animal flesh provides all the substances we need, both for the intensive working of our organism and for-maintaining a normal temperature in cold climates.

"Annam Bishthaa, Payo Mutram; jad Vishor na Niveditam." So, inspite of wheather the eatable creatures are of very lower beastly levels or of any saintly nature, we should consume nothing but Shri Hari Prasadam, which must be pure Sattwik food.

Most Indian are becoming tomoguni ,but pretending to be satyaguni ,as they follow vegetarian food to prove them ahimsak.
That's why they do not act righteously, when need arise ,when Hindus are insulted ,attacked .
Because ,they are basically becoming tomoguni ,that's why Swami Vivekananda advocated all to be rajasic first like Arjuna & fight to establish dharma.
But contrary to it, most of us act & became like spineless tomoguni & don't resist injustice ,but as they eat vegetarian food ,proudly claim to be satyaguni dharmic people .
For the good of Hinduism, we should have lesser people of that peculiar ahimsak mindset ! Otherwise, again we will be oppressed by religious fanatics of foreign origin .

    Greetings,
I actually have a question so please forgive me to write it down here:
I became a vegetarian after reading "the Holy Science" from master Shri Yukteshwar. The persuasive fact was that the author presented the frugivorous alimentation as a natural one based on our anatomy and senses.
The lack and need of B12 that some relatives of mine were worrying about apparently may interfere or be contradictory to the book's main argument.
This topic brings some unrest to the mind.
If some helpful and cleverer soul already found an answer to this matter, I beg him or her to share the solution.
    Thank you in advance.

@@amorfati9519 I'm pasting it again. The fact that majority of vegetarians are not affected by B12 deficiency is the proof. When I say deficiency, I don't mean analytical measurements. I mean, nothing significant happens to their health because of B12. A lot of people have lived more than 100 years even as vegetarian. So all these nutritional and scientific points are bullshit. It's same like how carcinogens are found on red meat. But there are a lot of red meat eaters who don't get cancer. Science papers and researches are not always right in a macro level. They unnecessarily find minute details that won't impact our lives practically.

Gut bacteria. B12 is synthesized by certain gut bacteria, although the source for B12 is still under investigation. I would assume it would be the type of gut bacteria that feed off fruits and vegetables. This is also how great apes get some of their essential nutrients as well.

So does that mean we should eat, for example, a cow, or even a yogi, because their cells are not beastly in nature and would according to this argument actually benefit the practitioner? Also, plants are even less "evolved" than animals; by this logic, plants should also be undesirable, perhaps even more so, than meat. And what of insects? Where do insects fall in this kind of reasoning?

We all evolved from a single celled microorganism to the most advanced life on this planet. Now from here there is a choice to advance towards the divine ( only possible in human birth) or regress towards animals and insects again.
There is no right or wrong. Just your choice.
If you just want to survive, eat anything you want. But if you want to drop your animal instincts and go beyond this endless cycle of repetitive birth and death, then a lot of things need to be done. Eating meat, pulls the mind towards your evolutionary animal instincts, whereas eating plant food doesn't have this effect on your mind.
      Why?
Anything that is addicting will keep you entangled in this world. That's why Caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, nicotine, onions, garlic etc are not recommended. Non veg is kind of addicting too, you can see that it's hard for people to quit meat or eggs.
But have you ever seen people who say they are addicted to carrots or cucumber or green vegetables? No, right. It's for that reason a vegetarian diet is recommended. Most people understand that drugs are addicting, but food items are more subtle, so it's hard for people to understand that some of the foods can be addicting too.
Following a certain diet makes it easier for you to be free from anything addicting, and hence free from the subtle pull of worldly desires (beast like quality).
