  • College Football season is drawing closer and on Late Kick Live Ep 151 Josh Pate took some time to spotlight what he feels are the most dangerous teams in the nation this year. Could LSU be the only program in America with unlimited upside AND downside? What would Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels look like with a significantly improved defense? What does TCU's schedule tell us about the potential Gary Patterson and the Horned Frogs may have? And could Washington be a surprise Playoff team from the Pac12? With the caveat that teams already ranked inside the top 10 with Playoff consideration are excluded, which teams do you think merit consideration to be considered the most dangerous in College Football this year? Regarding TCU - yes, they should be improved, but they have a lot of questions. That veteran o-line you’re talking about includes two transfers expected to start on a unit that has not been able to keep Dugan safe. They allowed 23 sacks last season, which was 71st in the nation, tied with Texas, and behind Oklahoma (24 in 11 games) West Virginia (21), Texas Tech (16), K-State (14), and Iowa State (16 in 12 games) in the Big 12. It doesn’t matter how underrated the WRs are if the o-line can’t pass block. As to TCU leading the Big 12 in rushing, the leading rusher for the team was Dugan, and much of his yards came on plays when he was forced to run to avoid being sacked. Hanging your QB out to dry and hoping he makes magic is not a formula for being a dangerous team. Dugan is really good, but he’s not Vince Young. Plus, an injury to him would be devastating to TCU’s season. I know you got a pitch from some friend who’s high on TCU, but I don’t think you have true grasp of what that team’s potential pitfalls are.

We just struggle with them for some reason. Add on the fact that we have to play AT Stanford, and I see a loss in the making. Oregon is tough, yes. But Stanford seems to have our number. Indiana could probably qualify for this too. People are gonna expect them to drop off slightly because they ended the season on a bad note without Penix. They got some really talented players in the transfer portal and if Penix is healthy they're a huge threat to spoil OSU, or ruin Cincinnati's chance of making a dark horse run, also have a chance to influence the race for the west division by taking down Iowa. Not to mention that TCU’s o-line has been bad and is counting on transfers to shore it up this season.
      K-State will come into week 5 knowing it can beat OU. So I still think @KSU is the second most likely game for a Sooners loss, with ISU being the most likely. I wouldn’t bet on OU losing to KSU or ISU, but if the Sooners drop a game, it’s probably one of those. TCU isn’t even in the conversation of who might upset OU, imo. The linebackers coach they hired has play calling experience🤷🏻‍♂️ and that kindof don’t mean shit as long as they change scheme as needed , I don’t expect someone like you to understand this but the main reason pelini 4-3 didn’t work was bc he rarely switched it up based on how the opposing offense was going…the kids hated him…and almost every player on that pelini defense was freshman🤷🏻‍♂️ the 4-3 still works otherwise NFL teams and college teams wouldn’t still be using it , but your pretty stupid if you don’t think coach O isn’t way ahead of you🤦🏻‍♂️ they got major burns from Georgia, and Mike Jones from Clemson ….and they brought in darante Jones🤷🏻‍♂️ you wanna know how all of these are connected? Bc darante jones coached the secondary from Minnesota which utilized a 4-2-5 nickel defense….and Georgia and Clemson are both 2 of the very few teams that utilize a DOMINANT 4-2-5 nickel defense..obviously they want a 2018-2020 Clemson/Georgia defense…those defenses have been known to be called bullies…they have Derek Stingley which is the best CB in the country, and Eli Ricks which seems to be just as good , TWO all American, experienced cornerbacks. Jay ward at safety , sage ryan , which was suppost to be the number two in the country , and major burns, etc etc, and they have an experienced linebacker core, the spring game defense looked pretty good to me even if it was “Just a spring game” I haven’t even brought up that D-line , you have I think the number one pass rusher in the country in mason smith. And the rest of that D-line are all veterans…they bring in an NFL D-line coach to coach the D-line…..that defense will probably be one of the best next season I can guarantee you that , save this comment and hold me to it , I know what I’m talking about

    • @purplegold8447

      That DC was a secondary coach in the NFL. Nonetheless, genius, LSU has two preseason first team All-Americans starting at CB. In fact, no other team in the country will have a better secondary than LSU.
      As the problem in 2020 was Bo Pelini, who was forced on Ed O last year. He's gone. Meanwhile, in the spring game Daronte Jones had the defensive backs doing some NFL next level stuff on the back end that caused TJ Finley to throw two interceptions and true freshmen Garrett Nussmeier to throw three interceptions.
      Last year was a season of miscues. That problem was eliminate immediately right after the end of the season when Ed O fired Bo Pelini.

    I think it’s fair that LSU is a pick but if that rape case is blown open and guys are guilty, LSU might stumble a bit with the off field stuff. Ole Miss to me, is more of an eliminator than a playoff team. It feels like they can eliminate other SEC teams playoff chances but can’t make the playoffs themselves. It feels like Lane can win big games but lose small ones. Oklahoma is a solid pick too, they have a lot of starters returning. I think Clemson bounces back too, Dabo recruited some O-linemen in the off season. I can see Dabo scoring Arch Manning in the future also. I can’t remember if the playoffs are extended this year or not but if they are, Cincinnati might play well enough to make it. These are totally guesses though, they could be completely wrong.

    Having a top 60 defense is not enough for Ole Miss. We've seen past Alabama teams with better offenses and a top 30 defense not be able to get the job done due to the offense scoring too frequently putting the defense back on the field far too often. The biggest decisive factor on if Ole Miss is a dangerous team this year is if their defense can be a top 10 team in terms of forcing turnovers. A top 60 defense with average turnover numbers won't get the job done, but if they turn into a ball-hawking defense, then you have a great team.

    LSU could win the National Championship this year, it is mostly on the QB which could be Max or Myles, our improved defense with 8 turnovers in the last two games played. One of those games was against 34 point favored # 6 rated Florida which played Bama for the SEC Championship after LSU beat them. Curious to see how Bama’s QB starts out, considering Bama usually has the #1 ranked signing class for 8 years in a row, with one exception, Bama should be, well you have got to dethrone the Champ before you can claim the title. A&M is starting a new QB, but strong and tested at other positions. Ole MS. I would not overlook them as Lane Kiffin is a very smart coach and like Saban, Lane hates to lose, remember last year they played LSU hard and pretty much to the wire with Ole MS”s two star receivers sitting out of the game. They gave Bama a run until the 4th quarter. Mullen if he would quit acting like a immature indecisive moron, he could get the respect from other teams like he did at MS. St by developing his players, especially at the QB position. With the multiple 5 ⭐️talent that the state of Florida produces year in and out, if Mullen buckles down the Gators should always be in contention. Auburn isn’t ready yet but it will be interesting to see if the two LSU ( at one time) starting transfers make a impact. Arik Gilbert should if he gets around his probation low grade point average. TJ left too early and should have stayed and battled it out with more effort instead of transferring, his only hope is if Bo gets injured and can’t play because he will not dethrone the son of a living Auburn Legend. LSU does have a schedule for the first time in years that should allow them to improve weekly with every game played, throw in the playoff expansion and if they give 100% and stay focused they will be in the Championship. Bama, with Saban’s new contract he could buy a Elon Musk ticket to the moon and call the game from there setting another new record and win the Natty. The only thing that is impossible with Saban is loosing two games in a row. It should be a great year with a lot of wild and crazy fans after most being on lockdown last year. Who let the Dogs out ? We will see, they are always barking, some day they will take a bite out of the Natty Trophy. Until then, good luck everybody. These are not the stations opinions, I assume full responsibility. Totally disagree with LSU take. I don't think they are a dangerous team at all, actually a team that is trending downwards tremendously. While the rest of the SEC West seems to be getting it together, (we know how you feel about A&M, Auburn with year 3 QB in Nix, Ole Miss offense, and Miss St can't be any worse). LSU has scandals, poor coaching, and a locker room with players seeming to be more interested in playing for themselves and fame then coming together as a team. Their defense is a MASSIVE question mark (can't trust a word coach O says about it going into the season) and their offense is too (no I don't believe in either QB). They will end up losing 5 games this year, worst case scenario more.

    The 1st two questions you have to ask about a team that can surprise is 1) Who is the QB? 2) What offensive system are they running?
    I have no idea who UW's QB is (Garbers?), they aren't dangerous to me, they can't score at an elite enough pace.

    • @Runescapewithred
      @Runescapewithred 3 роки тому +1

      Its Dylan Morris the same QB who started last year. He's beat out Sam Huard the number 1 pro style QB this year. The reason Washington is dangerous isn't the offense. Its that they have a top 5 defense and now they have a top 5 offensive line in the country as well as the biggest Oline. The only downside to the team isn't even QB play it's going be to be the recievers. Outside of maybe the best TE in college Washington's wr group is an unknown at this point yet from what I've seen so far they're going to be a hard nosed grind it out group. And scheme wise Washington is solid. They don't have to worry about shootouts because the offense is a true pro style offense of holding the ball and working the clock to your favor. Combine that with likely the best DB group outside of Bama and you're not going to be putting up points very easily against them. You also have to remember this isn't about being dangerous and making the playoffs this is based on them ruining teams chances at the playoffs or casting doubt on teams that could make it.

    • @goingyard06
      @goingyard06 3 роки тому

      @@Runescapewithred I appreciate that info. My only caveat would be if you're talking about who they can keep out of the playoffs, I would say nobody because no one in the PAC-12 is a contender because they don't get in the playoffs. If Oregon can somehow figure out how to beat OSU, and then UW beats them, then you might have a point there. USC maybe figures it out this year and UW can play spoiler, but SC hasn't shown that they are any better than a 9-3, 8-4 team in recent years anyway so they aren't really playoff contenders.

    • @Runescapewithred
      @Runescapewithred 3 роки тому

      @@goingyard06 Yeah, week 2 is the big decider of the PAC 12 playoff chances. Washington has a much better chance of beating Michigan than Oregon does OSU. I don't truly see SC as a threat anymore until they price otherwise. I see Stanford ASU and Oregon giving Washington major problems and the dark horse of the PAC is Oregon State. Oregon State, Utah Washington are really the only threats in conference for Oregon. Either team would have to go undefeated to make the playoffs. Although there may be a PAC 12 march madness effect where we saw the PAC run the tournament outside of Baylor and Gonzaga. There may just be a in conference beatdown where they can't really do much outside of it. I'd like to see what they could do with some rest and prep for the playoffs. The teams are much bigger and just as athletic as they were in the past where they just got mauled come postseason play. It's strange to see that Washington actually has the biggest offensive line in the country whereas they got manhandled at the point of attack by Bama not too long ago

    • @goingyard06
      @goingyard06 3 роки тому

      @@Runescapewithred Even if UW beats Michigan, to me, that is not really saying much and moving the playoff needle. It's the equivalent of a win over Auburn to me. It sounds good because the have cache, but once you get past the name, they just aren't that good.
      I see the PAC-12 getting squeezed out of the playoffs again unless Oregon runs the table. I look at it like this, there's one playoff spot available every year because Clemson, Bama, and OSU are gonna be in because they largely go unchallenged every year in conference except for Bama. This year might be the exception because they're all replacing QBs. The PAC-12 keeps beating up on each other every season and take themselves out the mix. On the road in the PAC-12 is easily the toughest slate in all of college football because there's like six teams of the same quality.
      They may have the size, but that doesn't mean that they have skill and have been coached up.

    • @Runescapewithred
      @Runescapewithred 3 роки тому

      @@goingyard06 Oh trust me I don't think Michigan is a good win either. But I think the same could be said for a lot of schools that play in other conferences. I think it's mostly just name value to many of them. Just looking at the top 25 like Texas, Miami, USC, etc. The only reason they're actually there is the name. But that's the PACs biggest problem is that they don't schedule enough out of conference big names to get the national recognition. A win for UW doesn't mean they're good, but it gets eyes on them. Just like an Oregon win over OSU puts them straight into the top 4 for the season unless they drop a couple games.

    Ehhhh….IDK Josh. I know LSU made you look like a million bucks in 2019, but that well might be dry for you in 2021. The Coach O train really derailed in 2020, and it wasn’t just Covid. Maybe he can galvanize the lockerroom again, but he’s equally as likely to fall on his behind and go 8-5 🤷🏻‍♂️.

    • @purplegold8447
      @purplegold8447 3 роки тому +1

      Ed O didn't have anything to do with the derailment, moonbat. You're right it wasn't all because of Covid, but nonetheless Covid did have a lot to do with it. In fact, when your four top returning starters from the 2019 team opt out before the start of the season, then you can't deny the effect Covid had.
      Not to mention that even though the football team consisted of virtually all brand new freshmen and sophomore starters, because of Covid the coaching staff could not completely develop and prepare those brand new starters before the start of the season.
      Then add to that that your senior starting QB got hurt and was out for the season with seven games remaining on the schedule. Which meant that two true freshmen QBs who barely had any reps because of Covid to transition from high school football to the SEC had to start for the remaining seven games.
      Then add to that Terrace Marshall and Arik Gilbert both opted out in he middle of the season.
      Yet, none of those above mentioned problems were nearly as problematic as Bo Pelini, who hadn't coached a defense since 2007 and who was totally unprepared for today's modern spread offenses, being hired as the DC by AD Scott Woodward and against the wishes of Ed O.
      As Bo Pelini was by far the greatest problem LSU had last season. As in most of the games LSU's offense played well enough to win, but the defense would have so many unforced miscues that it was impossible to win.
      No way, LSU goes 8 & 5 in 2021. As Ed O, unlike Kirby Smart, doesn't have a history of always choking in the big games.

Miami will be held back by their amateur coaching staff. A bottom top 25 finish is optimistic for this years canes.

    Ole Miss cuz Lane Kiffin good. Wisconsin cuz that QB when consistent is really good. Penn State cuz healthy RB room, and thats the only reason they had a bad season last year. Arizona State will surprise if Herm Edwards is still there, even though he shouldn't be fired for it. Lot say LSU, I disagree. I don't think O is a very good coach. He's a great recruiter, so talent wise, LSU is one of the best.

      Wisconsin no way yes QB been good/great against mediocre teams and they still need rbs average at best so was offensive linemen play and that was against medicore to average teams at best. Same for Penn state but I do like coach Franklin and they have same problem QB rb and offense linemen play is medicore against good teams but below average at best against elite to great teams. I do remember Franklin saying WE are not elite yet they need to prove it against elite teams and not just mediocre teams like last year when they only won against terrible to mediocre teams

      Coach O was good enough to win a national championship less than 2 years ago, yet you say he’s not that good of a coach !!!
      Throw the 2020 season out the window, they lost 38 total players off of their 2019 team. They had a new defensive coordinator, who actually changed the defensive system from what they used in the 2019 season. Now what makes that a huge issue, is the simple fact that they didn’t have any spring or early fall preseason practice time before the season started to amount to anything !!
      They literally dressed injured players who were never gonna play in the game because of those injuries, just to where they could meet the 53 available scholarship players rule to be able to play a game !!!
      Don’t forget about him losing his starting QB after only a couple of games into the season as well. That left him with only two true freshman QB’s.
      There’s a real reason as to why the 2020 season doesn’t count towards a players eligibility !!!
      Since the 2016 - 2019 seasons, nobody has played & beat more top 10 ranked teams than what Ed Oregron & LSU has !!
      2018 - 2019 seasons combined.
      Overall win / loss record over those 2 seasons.

      LSU - 13 - 1
      Clemson - 3 - 1
      Alabama - 2 - 2
      We know that Clemson & Alabama played against each other in the 2018 CFP mythical FBS football national championship game. We know that LSU & Clemson played against each other in the 2019 CFP mythical FBS football national championship game. That’s the reason for the 2018 & 2019 seasons being used for this comparison !!
      Who had the harder road to go down to reach the CFP mythical FBS football national championship game among those 3 teams ???
      Yep, it was by far LSU, right ??
      Oregron must be doing something right !!!
      His 2021 roster is made up with basically the same percentage of 4 & 5 star players, as what his 2019 roster was !!!
      LSU is a better team than what all of those other teams are that he mentioned, that much isn’t even debatable !!!
      Yet even still, LSU being a good team honestly won’t be a surprise to anyone that knows what their real numbers are !!!

      @@RT22-pb2pp Actually I would seriously advise that if anyone wants to bet for the underdog, it should be in those two games. Alabama will be a favorite in the Vegas spread that is all but guaranteed but they are vulnerable and both Florida and Ole Miss play them at opportune times. They both play Bama very early on in the season when Bryce Young might still be getting used to the system and the offense in general will have rust.
      Florida especially has big advantages because Florida itself has a lot of turnover and the fact that they play Bama in Week 3 in the Swamp is great because both teams offenses will have not clicked together by then, but only one team has a massive homefield advantage, and that is Florida. Not to mention that Florida actually returns more offensive production than Bama, and they have Mullen, who might just be the best play caller in the country.
      Ole Miss has the offensive advantage period because they return a veteran and highly talented quarterback, have an elite offensive play caller in Kiffin, whereas Bama is replacing everybody (players and staff) and I feel like Kiffin hates Saban's guts and so always expect Ole Miss to play their best game against Bama.
