      I've always contended that the raid mechanics themselves weren't necessarily that complex but they were pretty unforgiving and required near-perfect timing, combined with needing to have 40 players all on the same page, moving in unison. The first few raids meant you were geared in greens and blues that were best in slot because you couldn't get epics with daily quests, dungeons and activities. The servers back in the day weren't really equipped to handle that many people in a raid dungeon and often the framerate was a slideshow at best.
      I expect today it's not quite so bad with all the info and walkthroughs available online now and I would hope the servers and modern PC's are more than up to the challenge to bandwidth and resources.

      I thought this was incredible well made and indepth, and a very wise and well educated result. I'd also agree of how well nicely casual Classic actually is. It simply is big and takes time, but more in the matter of: for the long haul, without stress or obligation! And such the video presented well of why classic was such a success, in the release as well as in the re-release. Simply not the rest of blizz

    I feel like a big part of what makes classic feel more casual is the fact that you can log in just to socialise with friends and guildies, retail feels like a long list of chores you NEED to do before you are allowed to take a breather and talk to ppl.

      I also stay for the social aspect of it, i am very try-hard-ish in general but here i had no issue to stop at 50 and make a DPS alt that i can farm with for my healer main, getting that level 40 mount is pretty much the most "urgent" thing you feel you really need, afterward the game is very enjoyable to play at any pace. I even enjoy reading my quests while auctioneer scans the AH or gossiping with guildies about movies and such, it's amazing.

      Truth. I like retail. But i hated the feeling I had to dailies or stuff I’m not into to get stuff I needed for things I liked.
      Example.. I like mythic plus dungeons. But to stay competitive, I had to do dailies for artifact power, island expeditions for essence, rep grind (dailies a bit every day) for more essences. That’s not fun. An hour or more of must do work every day... my bf doesn’t have time for that, and he likes to pvp. But he also would have to do tons of work to get what he’d feel he needs. He can’t just pvp and get all he needs. That’s sad.

    When WoW first released in 2004, I was very young, but my parents played it quite a bit and I spent all my watching them. I was eventually allowed to create my own character play a limited amount during the burning crusade while being supervised, and I loved it. I never got past the mid 30s, not because I didnt play much but because I spent all my time wandering around high level zones and swimming in the undercity sludge and exploring the city. For me, the old wow was a very casual game. I spent most of WotLK making death knights, levelling to around 62 then making another because I found the starter quests so cool and spent the majority of later expansion taking over my parents characters (as they no longer played due to personal reasons) which was super cool to experience being a max level and levelling them to the new max. I never raided, and only did LFG dungeons from Wrath onwards, but WoW has so many casual elements that I loved, even in the so called hardcore expansions like the burning crusade.

    5:00 I am glad someone finally brought this up. The response of "Well then, just don't do X." That's not how a game like WoW works. Features in a game are not in a vacuum, but they affect everything else. Battlegrounds and Arena affect Wpvp. LFG affects Pugs. LFR affects Raiding. Mission Tables take away rewards from something else in the game that could have been better. Stop throwing out the same tired answer and think about how these different facets of the game affect each other. This is the WORLD of Warcraft, not "I'm on my own island and everything I do is independent of everyone else."

      The real problem is Retail puts these feelings of FOMO and inadequacy front and center to the player, to keep them playing and keeping them paying (for boosters, gold, cosmetics and WoW tokens). Sure there are probably loads of raiding guild who are way ahead of me, with players way ahead of my character progression and use mods to monitor and track that only guild members who play uber hardcore will be accepted into their guild/raiding. But in Classic none of that effects me if I choose not to be interested, I might however be interested tomorrow and in Classic I have a path towards progressing my character in that way, the same path everyone must take, and there are always more people joining that path. Not laughed at and assigned a boring grind of a catchup mechanic by the game's playerbase and developers alike in retail whilst raids and content are designated old, outgeared and left to rot by everyone, only playing the newest raid. Eventually if you try to do everything in retail you drown in trying to keep up, spending all your free time doing the same unengaging activities on 1 character, burning out to the endless demand that YOU MUST DO THIS EVERYDAY. Games are meant to be fun, being forced to run through the same checklist every day and week is work.

I felt like a how to quit my job just to keep up, so I stopped playing. Even now, it just seems like there are too many little details I'd want to experience within the game, but won't have the time to even try if I wanna participate in the current events. Classic is allowing me to experience the MMORPG again without the feeling so lost and behind. I'd rather spend 1 year leveling up and enjoying all the relevant content then playing the endgame content with all the friends I make on the way, than spend 1 month getting to the endgame content and spending the next year trying to keep up with all the dailies to stay relevant.

    Great video. I'd have to say I'm probably more on the casual side of the spectrum, but only due to time restraints. Can't no-life 10 hours a day anymore, and have to juggle game time between work and family. All that said, I just hit 55. Back then when I DID no-life 10-15 hours a day, I didn't get close to 55 by this point. It took me probably 4-5 months to cap. I just didn't know what to do. I think I'm levelling well ahead of twice as quickly compared to last time. Likely be 60 and start end-game shenanigans in another week or so. And yeah - there's challenge that doesn't exist in Retail, but the biggest thing is that everything feels important, and thus I'm happy and looking forward to logging in, even if just to finish 2-3 quests, among all the travel time. If a casual like me can still, more or less, be ahead of the pack, it's certainly casual-friendly. I think I saw MC for the first time almost a year after launch - this time around, I'm on pace to get there just around the 2-month mark. It's just so good!

    Classic is so much more bring the class, while now, it is bring the player. They do not feel that much more different than each other now, classic, each class had it's own advantages and disadvantages.

I currently enjoy classic because I can take my time doing what I want.

    I feel like it's hard to have a discussion here in this channel about retail or classic when you are such a hardcore classic streamer/youtuber. people here have such a strong "good" opinion about classic and a strong "bad" opinion about retail that I feel it's kinda meaningless to have a talk about it in the first place. I love retail and I love classic but I feel like people just like bashing retail now. (sorry for bad english)

    • @alexanderxyz6146
      @alexanderxyz6146 2 роки тому

      no people don't like bashing for the sake of bashing.. what are you saying... but because people are simply not satisfied with it? What's so hard to understand about it. It sounds like you try to make the arguments invalid...
      I personally never played classic era, and agree with all said here, cause when I tried the game, it all makes sense that was summarized in this video. And the stuff I don't like in retail is reflected here well, too. People say stuff for certain reasons!, ALWAYS, mostly not just for fun... If you feel like it's hard having a discussion here, then simply because you don't like being disagreed with, which is perfectly normal and fine. But maybe then, indeed you are in the wrong place. Simply let the people enjoy classic?? That's why there was such a huge demand for that game, and you can enjoy your retail. I don't remember I go to a retail channel ever after since. It's rather normal to prefer one game, no one urges you to come here. BTW: Subjectivity is a huge part of games and which you love... perhaps you should also reflect about that.
      Like of course people here like classic? (at the time of this video) And if they don't like retail that's also their choice?
      Again, it sounds like you don't want people to have an opinion, because it's not your opinion (here some not liking retail)
      Who said this was ought to be a place to have a neutral discussion - preference is not neutral... So after all that you sound like a princess, TBH.
      Then, when you feel ppl bashing retail, then perhaps you are not aware of how others like bashing classic.... So of course some people react more strong about it then!?! Perhaps here. But again especially cause it's normal to have an opinion, you don't have to like both. But also you can like both and still bash one! (Like Fanboys bash their own games alll the time... all the time. So of course... they also happen to bash your game while pointing out stuff they like which happens to be the other game but it might aswell be the same game! Mind blown) And FYI also Madseason does bash classic where it needs to be bashed btw...
      So with all that in mind you should perhaps hear/read yourself speaking.
      All That being said this streamer did a hell of a good job to stay objective and stating where its his opinion rather than a definitive result for everyone! He always preaches to get your own result... But that's just for his credit. I'm not saying that's a noble deed. It's simply cause he is a video maker adressing several people.

In that you can't just see a purple drop and have it automatically be an upgrade to your blue. The stats vary wildly on gear and you have to pay much closer attention to the stats on then and how the affected your character (and spec) to determine if it is actually an upgrade.

    Going back to Vanilla and why it was considered casual... You're right about the softer penalties on death, but also just the ability to level to cap solo on any class was pretty out there. Coming from EQ where only a couple classes could do that (assuming good gear... or playing Necro), or even Final Fantasy 11 which came out shortly before Vanilla, the idea of leveling solo easily was just crazy casual sounding. In 11 (at the time) most classes couldn't go past level 15ish without needing to group. I don't mean for group quests, I mean to progress at all. The only real 'solo' class was beastmaster, and you needed level 30 on another class to unlock that. At the time I feel the leveling solo idea was a huge part of what made it a casual mmo, and reshaped the genre as every game since adopted that formula. Good vid, glad Classic is back and I've had a good time playing it again. And watching stuff like this just talking about it.

    Casual is also a state of mind about the "game." I couldn't handle the end game hamster wheel so I quit entirely. The pressure I put on myself to not fall behind and "do it all" made logging on feel like the start of a long and not too enjoyable checklist. After a nine year hiatus I'm back playing classic with three different characters and when I want to play one I do. "casual friendly" to me means more about time rather than difficulties. Classic wow just takes too much time to do anything. Raids and dungeons take ages. Casuals are more restricted by time rather than difficulties.

    • @laner.845
      @laner.845 5 років тому +2

      Time is absolutely the primary restriction of casuals! That's why I prefer to enjoy what little time I have and not stress about completing things. Since I don't have to keep up with anyone in classic, as a casual, I much prefer that to feeling like I'm constantly falling behind the curve in retail when I only have 3-5hr/wk to play. And if those hours don't line up with the evenings when more people are around, forget dungeons, and raids are a pipe dream. I get to play after work during a window from 8am-10am CT on two, maybe three week-days a week (never weekends), and never for the full two hour block. Going my own pace and planning my own adventure in Classic is so relaxing and enjoyable compared to just rushing through content that I have to rush through on repeat every single day/week on retail, all with nothing to show for it because I'm still so far behind everyone else I might as well not be playing.
      It may take longer to do any given Thing in Classic, but I don't have to waste time doing all the upkeep chores (daily/weekly repetitive junk) before I can actually go do Things in Classic. I'm not locked behind rep grinds or resource grinds to progress my characters. Those things are optional. Classic is just a light and freeing breath of fresh air.

    4:54 I cant really agree with you here, with the whole "optimize your character" thing. This has just become a thing people THINK is correct, when thats far from the truth.... Well, we can't model ourselves after the Top 300 guilds in the world that take every tiny little 0.01% upgrade they can, can we... Your weekly islands are good until youre neck 60-ish, so like 6 islands total. Other than that, dungeoning and raiding will do just fine. It did for me, rerolling just over a month ago and now progressing Ashvane M on that character. Lets go on a ramble;
    Everything ties back into what you say at 7:35. Ever since WoD, maybe even Mists, leveling as been extremely quick, and you have been introduced to new spells/passives far quicker than you can actually deal with and learn as a new player. This inability to learn the game through leveling, like you would in classic, has created a wall at max level between casual players and even semi-hardcore players. Level boosts didnt help this situation. Hell, Blizzard has also fallen into a trap whilst doing this, creating unintentional interplay between certain abilities that there is no way to know is there unless someone tells you, or you do deep 3rd party studying.
    For example; lets take a Havoc Demon hunter in the new patch, a simple spec in most peoples eyes. With Memory of Lucid Dreams (minor) in play you suddenly have alot more fury to play with. This shot up the value of Demonic Appetite, since you can chaos strike more.... And DA allows you to chaos strike EVEN MORE, making more soul shards. Did I mention there is an Azerite trait that decreases the cooldown of Eye Beam by 0.7 sec pr shard? Oh and it doesnt end yet, there is also a talent that grants you Meta for 8 sec after you Eye Beam, and ANOTHER Azerite trait that gives haste when you Eye Beam.... Get 3 of those and suddenly you have 3000 extra haste for 12 sec. That means more soul shards! Which ups the value of the CD reduction trait.... Did I mention you still have a free trait spot which *changes* depending on the content you do? Oh and forget about the talent that reduces Meta cooldown when you eat soul shards, its not ACTUALLY useful at all despite all I just said. Take the one that adds minor damage to your AoE ability that you will now use on single target in stead. Did I mention this class only has 3(4 with EB) rotational buttons?
    See *how much bullshit* that is? Its far too much to keep track of for most people. This is why, in my opinion, classic is super casual friendly, even compared to BfA. You get *plenty of time to learn everything* , most abilities you get are situational, or do noticably less damage, so you can actually tell its worse than another ability. Any outside changes come from tier sets or is placed in clear simple green text on items. Your social skills should not be factored in to how "hard" it is to play classic, if you cant/wont join a guild, that has nothing to do with the game itself, same for retail.
    Sorry about this overly long comment, I feel like people arent focusing on the core of problems with retail. It boils down to the leveling gameplay, and while trying to fix it, they added fuel to the fire.

    Much better gearing process in classic than any other mmo. I love the fact that a full raid of 40 has to split up only a handful of drops per boss. It makes items like thunderfury actually impressive and rare. It is nice when only a dozen people in the server have a certain item due to its rareness, makes getting those items and full tiered sets much more rewarding.

    Casual playing - log in anytime I want for however long I want and still be able to do whatever I want.
    Classic - everything takes stupid amount of time and is usually incredibly tedious. From leveling to preparing for raids.
    => Not casual friendly.
    This video feels like it's comparing casual play in Classic to min/max play in BfA and that's just wrong. You don't need to do every WQ, every emissary... every everything at all. A lot of guilds don't even run normal raids or like only once or twice then just HC and after HC is cleared they run only mythic and HC only as optional and/or to gear alts. So the whole broken record argument "you have 4 raid difficulties" is a moot point. And LFR? Please...
    I am playing Classic for about 6 weeks and I am 39 lvl. I can play approximately 1.5h a day for 4 days in a week. I am already getting burnt out from how slow and boring the leveling is (not hard, it's not hard at all...). "But Classic is all about the journey" yeah F that. I've leveled multiple times so I don't care about exploring the world and whatnot. I know the world. I just want to reach the start of the game - getting 60 and begin preparing for raids.
    What I can do in 1.5h in Classic? Log in, conjure consumables, do 2-3 quests. This takes like an hour because of the nonsensical abyssmal drop rates on quest items and/or having to wait for mobs to respawn... the rest is just boring traveling in between. And that's on normal realm so I don't have to worry about alliance trying to embiggen their dicks by killing lower levels. It would be way worse on a pvp realm. And I am a mage so I have a little advantage in traveling, so...

      @hainedubstep 5 років тому

      I agree with the first part of classic being more hardcore than BfA. Also the video idd compares casual classic playstyle to hardcore BfA playstyle. Because you can have sense of urgency in classic too, even with 2 raids and only 1 difficulty mode. You still feel behind if you don't finish them each week. You have to get consumables in time ready for raid else you feel behind compared to those who has all consumables for raid days. You have to get your BiS ASAP else you feel behind etc.
      However, I don't get why you complaining about leveling in classic. It is clear that if you lack time for playing then this game shouldn't be a part of your life. My advice is to stop playing classic altogether if you only have 1.5h each day or you should manage time better. If you can, you should play 1 day per week. Sum up that 1.5h per day 4 days a week. If you play 1 day a week for 6h you should be able to level and later gearing up more consistently. I remember when I leveled back in 2004, I only could play on saturday evenings, so what I had was max rested char and I was pulling of 2 levels each session. That way you won't feel like you are doing nothing. Rested experience is crucial if you don't have all the time in the world to play, but if you log in daily and even play 1.5h I don't think you will ever get one and a half level worth of 200% xp.

    Really well said, and really well made conclusion. Credit were credit's due.
    I'm actually surprised there are still dailies in modern games, feels so oldschool and chore-ish.
    There is nothing worse to your fun than a ton of daily obligations - as explained, no must, but having that feel of falling behind drastically when not doing them, instead of playing it in your own time and simply play the content that you are interested NOW. Also... you can't say Dailies foster limitation, when they are so many and take up a lot of time... Even with few time,,, especially more then, I don't want to do dailies! Cause it would be the same thing all over... and having even less time for the stuff you actually want to do. Instead of , "hey today I feel like ramping up my gathering skills - let's just do that." I feel progressing were I want is much more fun.
    And it's a great point, maybe you need more overal time to level up in classic. But it's simply part of the game, play each weekend a little bit, for a great adventure - not even a must. (before raiding, but then the only weekly is the raid, nothing else!). That's casual!
    Through leveling and similar it simply offer's to be played for longer but very casually. I wouldn't even say seeking some help or searching a team during leveling isn't casual, it's actually a very natural thing that is fun and part of the game play. Every casual can do that, since it's an innate skill of you as a human! The leveling certainly isn't hard or unforgiving, you simply need to get used to it a little - perhaps after you got used to the more modern games that spoonfeed you everything. After you find that lookingi at the mob level and area helps, to not get too strong enemies, it will be much better.
    A little not-super-ez mode can reward looking into the actual features of the game such as crafting, or herbs for instance. Or a little trading here or there to buy some potions maybe. Adding depth. Exactly what blizz advertised the game for: An epic journey to look back on.
    PS: I'm not a classic guy, but when I played it, I felt really, wow this is all so greatly done. It's a really good game. It only takes time. But that's why it's an MMO with sub costs right? You play it for longer and hopefully without a feel of stress or chore!
    (which could only be coming through external means - if there is nothing ingame wanting you to, such as no dailies)
    I totally get why people sticked to wow (in release) so long.
    But today's people are different, especially through media (websites, yt, live-streams), the minmax pves lurking forums cause they are passionate about it so you meet those guys most, or the hardcore pvpers, cause that's the nature of pvp: hardcore and competition. I think when I tried this game, I simply went into a BG mid leveling, perhaps spend some res on a few enchants, and rocked, even though I was new, I just had fun and that's how I improved.
    - Contrary, today you would be shout at for not preparing properly, and so on. Not really casual friendly or gamer-ish.
    It's an MMO - and based on the people.
    And with that we can conlude: Today's communities are much less casual friendly, and back then it was casual friendly. THUS: THe game back then was rather casual friendly, but today's game less so! Especially when devs don't remove such chore-ish features such as dailies and other "obligations"...

    I have to admit. I was worried, that it was really just a nostalgia, which attracts me to the game. I don't have that much time I had 10-15 years ago. So I play it just when I have a time and I fu**ing love it. Just few hours, do some quest, skill up my professions, travel, explore...I am right now lvl 40 but I love the journey - and that is the point. Classic is about journey.
    And btw keep up the great work Madseason!!

    I have a lvl 81 rogue. I have this character since MoP, I mostly played with him for 2 months in 2015 and 2 months in 2016, he has almost 7k pvp kills - I got a good amount of pvp achievments with him - and the profession is almost on par with his level, it was, by far, the best experience I had with WoW even thought I did some end game content in Cataclysm and Wrath of the Lich King.
