I have a Sawyer Mini in all my bags (my bags, the wife’s bag, etc). It a great piece of kit. My tip: I keep two water bags with the filter. One for clean water and one for dirty water. I take the top off of a bottle of Smart-Water, and put it on the ‘clean’ water bag. Smart-Water has a little drinking spout on the cap. The spout fits perfectly (may be a little tight at first) over the drinking end of the Sawyer filter, and makes it easy to back-flush the filter. That way, it is unnecessary to carry that huge plunger that comes with the filter.
As an American veteran, the ideal of Redundancy is still strong with me. Yes, I have a Sawyer Mini, as well as purification tablets, and a means to boil water. I also use the US GI aviator 1 pint water flasks/canteen, and the Sawyer Mini is a perfect fit to the screw on cap section of the flasks
Good video. I use the sawyer squeeze and the same CNOC bag. I prefer the squeeze it has a greater capacity, better flow rate, doesn't get clogged as fast and isn't that much more cost or weight. Just have to keep 'em both from freezing. Nate
i always carry a sawyer mini when im out in the mountains/hills etc and a millbank bag just in case works a treat packs down small and descent bit of kit .thanks for sharing
I've been using the Sawyer for a few years and have been happy with it so far, but I would like to point out another filter that I use. I also have the "Katadyn BeFree Tactical 1.0 L" and it's always in my smock, the one with is in my car. If I'm passing through somewhere and spontaneously want to explore the forest, all I have to do is put on my smock that's in the trunk and off I go! It also contains the "Katadyn BeFree Tactical" and it's really awesome! I highly recommend it! What is better about the Katadyn than the Sawyer is the water flow rate and I find it more compact when folded.
Use mine most days and have used it all over the world. No issues and very effective in a wilderness setting. Just be aware of chemicals when around arable farm land and urban areas. And never let it freeze! that 0.1 micron filter will soon be much bigger and crypto etc will be inbound! Great work as always pal.
Got a mini and micro plus purification tabs and millbank bag for emergencies. I quite like the Katadyn be free and then just fill up a bladder with it for hiking.
I use the lifestraw. It fits to a medium sized pop bottle I take with. I also have an issue water bottle - 85 pcle- I take filled and refill as and when. I do have the Sawyer on my shopping list but the lifestraw is okay.
So glad I found this channel great advice for kit when contracting away, I have been in so many isolated situations where you never can tell what you will need. Would like to see more videos based on recommendations of plate carriers/helmets and such. Anyway thank you for the channel, least I’ve got a new you tube worm hole 🕳 to go down 😂
I’ve got the same filter and bag. I’ve also been experimenting with some adaptors that will let me refill another bladder without taking it out of its home behind one of my rocket pouches.
ive got the sawyer squeeze, similar to mini except higher flow rate and outlet has thread as well so you can screw on a receiving comtaining.....very modable
Used to be on the sawyer team. Ugh the terrible flow rates. Switched over to the katadyn be free filter and never looked back. Pair the Be free with a hydrapak bag and you’re good to go. The downside is freezing. This mini filter is a good one to keep unused in your kit in case of emergencies if your primary filter is questionable due to freezing.
Do these filter chemicals? I don’t think they do unless you can tell me otherwise. If not it will be difficult to be sure of lower lying land water as you would get chemicals from the usage on the farm’s upstream!
Big fan of this system. I have a clean and a dirty bag for my system. I do it that way so I can fill my canteen(s), then run another 2 litres through into the clean bag, and refill the dirty bag with another couple of litres. That way I can expand my water carried by an extra 4 litres over my canteen if required. It's something I've done at the last water source before my campsite plenty of times so I have enough to rehydrate, make food and get a hot brew in the morning.

In Germany you can put it direct on a supermakret plastic water bottel- with minus Celsius temperatures you have to keep it direct on your body -or it could burst the membrane and you do not even know it s not purifying the water any more.
Wow, that's better than the Days of WW2 SAS (Desert) operations, when they collected & distilled there own urine.... Keep in mind, Water sources were scarce....
I've heard little or nothing bad about the Sawyer Mini (or the Squeeze), but I also know they've got plenty of good company in that class of filters. Me, I'm looking towards some of the new LifeStraw/CamelBak models for an inline filter, since my much lesser CamelBak one broke a couple of years ago. I still own that perfectly good hydration bladder, however, and would feel some confidence in buying something built to go with it specifically. A Sawyer kit could go well in an emergency pocket, to be sure, in a Ziploc with some other water-purifying items. But my first bet is on the Lifestraw.
I use that one too i found it on Amazon for about £12.00. Came in a carry box but also use purification tablets as a back up if the only water available is from puddles and ponds. Never had a problem good video 👍👍👍👍
For mine I picked up a 2liter bottle preform/vial. Like the plastic unblown up 2litter. Same thickness of the mini maybe 1.5” longer. Weight is pretty much the same. And threw out the preform standard bottle cap an screwed on a smart water bottle cap to the preform with the little blue spout an flip cap. But the little preform I heated up a mail an melted a small hole in the bottom. Than put a little coffee filter down in the bottom of it. An filled the vial with charcoal. So than I connect my sawyer to the dirty water bag. And the clean side tip of the sawyer mine can than push into the smart water bottle flip cap nozzle. So after the dirty water passes through the filter to be cleaned. It’s than going right into an through another charcoal filter basically to clean up any taste that would of been. An comes out of the hole I melted into the bottom of it. Can either drink it from there or fill a bottle from that end.
I have the sawyer but as an emergency just in case unit because of its 100,000 gallons capability but I prefer my Katadyn pump when out because a pump can be stripped down cleaned and dryed leaving zero moisture in it when stored, meaning no bacterial buildup, which you cannot do with the sawyer and similar closed unit purifiers. The syringe will get a lot of moisture out of the sawyer but not all and so storage could cause problems because it's a closed unit, and pump filters are also replaceable. Pumps maybe a bit slower in usage but imo much safer for long term use.
Good on you, what Regiment? I’m at a passing out parade on Friday up there as it goes. Maybe a decent sleeping bag (l use a Softie 9) and a good pair of boots. Probably best to wait until you get to Battalion first though.
Great informative video. Think one of these will be ideal for the boss as she's pestering me to get her a filtration system when she's off camping. Thanks mate 👍
It all depends on the ground and the situation. Firstly, what is the likelihood of dead animals being upstream? If you're in relatively open ground I'd check a couple of hundred metres, and if you have an optic like a monocular you could check past this without having to physically walk the distance. However in a jungle environment it would take you a lot longer and a lot more effort to cover the same distance, so it's all down to risk vs reward.
As an old fart now I haven't seen the Sawyer before. Looks brilliant. Only ever drunk out of rivers and peat bog in Czech Republic and the spa waters of Karlovy Vary surrounded by Russians (and a right laugh when we were on the Becharovka). Only drunk beer in what was Yugoslavia all over before the war. Have drunk dug well water disinfected by rakia in Bulgaria. Had a right laugh with Russians and Bulgarians in Nessebar. Tried to avoid the Windging Poms. Cheers
From what I hear they don't last, they get clogged easily and the water flow slows down considerably, even after boiling it when It gets clogged, it's pretty much screwed and fit for the bin...You'd be lucky to get 50l out of it never mind the 100,000 Gallons...
You're supposed to filter the water for big bits and back flush it when its flow slows down. Yes, if they are abused they will fail. I've had mine for years and it's still going strong.

Used ours extensively in Ghana and other places. Works a treat. We have confidence in this product and carry 1 each in our bugout/get home bags.

Cheers, I used mine yesterday on the hills as it goes.
@@PreparedPathfinder sometimes carry a filter straw as a back up when im out 2-3 days
I keep one of these in my Smock kit as back up. Though being used to tablets I generally use tablets for my norm.
Remember a great advantage of Sawer filters is they use a ‘standard’ thread so can be used on many different (& free) water bottles etc.

Upvoted. My katadyn befree was a game changer. Plus it is 1L so water purification tablets are easy to add, just in case
That CNOC bag looks great, I've just been using a scrunched-down 2L plastic bottle.
Use mine most days and have used it all over the world. No issues and very effective in a wilderness setting. Just be aware of chemicals when around arable farm land and urban areas.

I love Sawyer. I have a squeeze in the main bag and the mini in my minimal bag.
Got a mini and micro plus purification tabs and millbank bag for emergencies. I quite like the Katadyn be free and then just fill up a bladder with it for hiking.

theres a new version of lifestraw out thats more like a sawyer

I recommend the Sawyer Squeeze over the Mini because the flow rate is so much better especially when used as a gravity set up 👍

Good idea mate 🤙
I use the sawyer mini also, there are loads to choose from but this is small and simple enough.
The sawyer is a great starter filter. Being available at walmart (at least locally) puts it in the hands and minds of many people. Good review

Yeah it’s defo more of an emergency type device, depends on how you are operating and how much water you’re filtering on a regular basis.
@@PreparedPathfinder Agreed
I use it in my get home bag, for the very reason
hold the water collection bag the other way round when collecting water that way harder for debris etc to flow into it
Would you still use a Millbank bag in any circumstances?
Yes l have one of those too, good for pre filtering bigger particulates from less clean water sources in an emergency.
Looks like a lot of potential for cross contamination, I guess that's why these pocket filters are so much cheaper than the pump style
Very useful info.
Great video I have two of them good job😃👍
Cheers Gary 👍
Where could I get the Cnoc bag you mentioned for it to screw into
www.ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk/equipment-c3/hydration-c34/water-bottles-bags-c35/vecto-2l-water-container-28mm-p16848
Is there anyway to tell when you have burnt it out? Or would you just have to see it from getting ill.
Where did you buy the CNOC bag please?
Currently on week 23 at ITC catterick , could you recommend some kit to get for going to battalion?
Good on you, what Regiment? I’m at a passing out parade on Friday up there as it goes.
Maybe a decent sleeping bag (l use a Softie 9) and a good pair of boots. Probably best to wait until you get to Battalion first though.
What’s the difference between the green and blue sawyer water filters?
Great informative video. Think one of these will be ideal for the boss as she's pestering me to get her a filtration system when she's off camping. Thanks mate 👍
Saya membeli sawyer mini, active carbon filter + aquatabs untuk emergency disaster bug out bag
How far do you recommend checking upstream for dead animals, contamination etc ?

100.000 glns for that little one ..size really doesn't matter then .
How prevalent are viruses in UK water, this doesn't filter them out.
I lasted 4 days without water before I died.
Be careful to have unfiltered water mixing with your filtered water container, looks a bit careless the way you handle it.
Sawyer Squeeze has much better flow rate
