    Brent Spiner (Star Trek, Independence Day) joins us this week to drop some bombs about a certain someone’s return from the dead in Picard Season 3. Brent shares how he feels about being recognized (mostly) for a single character as Data in Star Trek - and later gets into the weeds on what his experience with the android has been like over the last few decades. We also talk about lessons learned from Joe DiMaggio, how he beat himself out for a Saturn Award, and tons of stories from his other roles in Night Court, Master of Disguise, and more!

    I watched the entire TNG a few months ago (took awhile), and the cast is great, but I was most impressed by Brent Spiner. He had in my opinion, the most difficult tasks, playing lots of different people/characters, and even just Data by himself, which has a lot of range in there.

      @@captainpoppleton They may appear lower in quality by today's standards, but in 1987 what "TNG" accomplished was pretty much top of the line, especially for standard-definition TV. George Lucas' company ILM was actually responsible for the Enterprise exterior shots in the pilot, which were re-used for the rest of the show. And when the Blu-Rays were put together in 2012, many of the effects were either cleaned up or completely redone in HD, depending on what resources they still had available.

      Data was my favorite character by far - I related to him struggling to understand a crew full of emotionally-driven people, while having no feelings of his own. Brent and other cast members would remark years later, that they often got fan mail congratulating them, for using Data as a symbol for the autistic community.

    Smart move, not only because of the payoff, but to remind Paramount that these Star Trek actors are aware that they have always run the risk of being typecast. It happened to all of the original cast. Shatner got to do some other TV, but the rest didn't do much outside of Star Trek. Spiner handled that spectacularly.

    • @PaulGaither
      @PaulGaither Рік тому +7

      What I always found interesting is that DeForest Kelley (Dr McCoy) had already been typecast as a bad guy in westerns and received pushback in playing Bones in ToS becasue executives felt audiences wouldn't belive that this bad guy could be a good guy. Nowadays, few people even knew/remember that he once played bad guys.
      It was also said that OJ Simpson was considered for the Terminator, but nobody thought he could pull off playing a killer, as he had ben doing comedy with the Naked Gun.

    Must be depressing to be paid off rather than to be put IN a movie. Spiner is a talented actor, I suspect the reason they paid him off is because they did not want to set a precedent for actors putting demands in their contracts to be given another role.

    • @diamondjim7560

      Spiner said he already had a movie deal in Independence Day when Paramount didn’t offer him another movie. What is surprising is that Paramount didn’t lock him down from working with another studio. Independence Day was 20th Century Fox.

    • @JohnnyNatrium
      @JohnnyNatrium 5 місяців тому +1

      That precedent had been set over half a century before. This specific clause branch of 'multi-movie deals' has been a part of cinema since old-old Hollywood. In fact from the side of film studios, it used to be common practice for them to demand that a theater would screen other movies by them, B movies that were less popular, if they wanted permission to screen their latest big A-movie (with budget and star-power, major production and writing talent etc.) which every theater wanted of course. That was known as "Block booking";
      "You want people to come see the next Humphrey Bogart hit in your theater? You gotta block in a bunch of screentime for these movies that some rookies shot with no-name actors in half a week which we spent nothing on..."

      @@Iri-b1j Yep. I'm a long time fan. Have seen each series front to back, multiple times.....Picard season 1 and 2 were very good. Not great, but very good. People were just sad they didn't get the nostalgia they wanted but I believe Patrick Stewart was right to insist that this Picard be more fragile and require more help from those around him. It's exactly what really happens when people age.
      Season 1's plot premise was excellent, with the Soji story line. Other parts of it weren't perfect. The Elnor story line was a bit meh, but not terrible.
      Season 2 wasn't quite as good in my opinion but still enjoyable. I liked the overall Borg/Q story line. And Picard's self journey was very well written.
      Season 3 basically caved to fan expectations. The quality of writing in season 3 was strange. The overall story was excellent but a lot of the dialogue was absolutely awful. I'll leave it at that cause you haven't watched it.

    Yeah Michael Rosenbaum, love your interviews of some of my favorite people. But really now, Michael… We need to talk.
    Rosenbaum, eh? Could be Jewish like me or, German. No matter. A rose by any other name…… But I digress.
    In listening to numerous interviews. Your guests, sound great. But your microphone? Sounds like it needs a bit of work. Let's review.
    Both microphones, SM-7's. B's. As that is the latest model flavor. And you have both of those microphones, plugged into, something. Generally it would be some kind of, Microphone Mixer. But not always these days.. And microphones typically need, a little extra help and pizzazz.
    While it sounds like you may be using something? In the way of, Dynamic Range. It's not the right kind nor enough. And your microphone is sounding rather, blasé. In comparison to your guests, microphone. Which have a much more present, full-bodied, robust, sound. Yours sounds a little like it, fell in the mud. And you brushed it off. Instead of washing it out. And now you have said, in your swimming trunks. At you know how that feels on your scrotum. It's not a pleasant experience. And your microphone is sounding a little like that. So what to do?
    Well Michael Rosenbaum. It's a good thing I'm here. A 20 year Veteran. Of NBC-TV News in Washington DC at the News Hub. But before that I worked for a major, national, advertising agency. In charge of all audio and video productions. And after making history and multiple major music award nominations for my engineering expertise. To put your mind at ease. Your fix is simple, easy, cheap, plentiful and will make a huge difference. It'll put you into a higher league.
    There is an inexpensive lovely purpose built gizmo. The DBX Corporation of Waltham Massachusetts. And they made some great studio stuff.. From the early 1970s. I have most of it in my studio. Except one item. I have gotten for numerous clients of mine. That I've set up a voiceover facility four. At their home. With one of these gizmos DBX makes.
    You will find plenty on EBay, used. They been around a long time now. It's called the Model 286,, Microphone Processor. Early models were in black. Later models were in shiny aluminum. It doesn't matter which one you get. New or old. It'll be a game changer.
    There's a couple different ways to utilize this gizmo. You can put one on your microphone exclusively. And plug that into your mixer.. Where your other microphones don't get that processor. They just going to the mixer.
    Or, you can put it on the output of your mixer. Even though it's a microphone processor. You can plug a line input, into it. And that way. It can process all the microphones. On the same gizmo together. Or!
    You get, 2 or 3 of those. You dedicate a microphone to each one. And the output of each one gets plugged into your mixer together. So everybody's microphone has their own processor. And it will sound like a Game Changer. When you adjust the controls on the front. To get your money's worth out of the gizmo. Which means. Turning everything up substantially. And it will do its thing. You will hear it. And you will be amazed. And you can usually find them for around, $100 or so. Plus or, minus a few. They are great little gizmos. They have an enhancer built in. Enhanced low frequencies. Enhance the high frequencies. Then the Limiter. Turn it up good. Make the LEDs light up across the board. And then everything will sound like crap. Then you turn up the noise reducer knob. And like Magic! All the noise in the background is gone. It sounds like you are in a Hollywood Voiceover Studio. And it's your kitchen. And it changed the acoustic sound of your room. It's gone! Like you put all this soundproofing in you spent thousands for. But no! You gotta DBX 286 plugged in.
    I have something similar that I put together. One version cost about $5000. The other version cost about, $7000. But I have no problems using a DBX 286. They do the same thing.. There's a slight difference in sound. As you would likely imagine. But really not that much different. It's a nuance different. Maybe more important for a rock 'n' roll superstar? Not so important for you. I'm just saying… It happens… No harm no foul, intended. Even if you are a rank amateur? Everybody has to start somewhere.
    Yeah I really do have that stuff one MIC chain is a, Rupert Neve, 1073/1081/3115, microphone preamp, Equalizer, modules. Any of those models.. I have 24 of just one of those. And they sound great. Or an API, 312 Microphone Preamp and 550 or 560, Equalizer, tone control thingy. And that gets plugged into a, UREI, model 1176. Fast acting, Peak Dynamic Range Limiter. But nothing kicks up some more background noise. So I get rid of that kicked up background noise with another gizmo. Called a Allison Research, Key able, Programmable Expander or KEPEX-1. And that's a magical device. That wipes out background noise and can electronically change room acoustics and reverb times.
    And if I don't use that on vocals. Then I might use my Dolby A-361, Type A, Noise Reduction Processor.. With no tape recorder plugged in. Because I've purchased the Dolby, CAT-22, Hollywood Voice Processor. Optional accessory to plug into their noise reduction gizmos. To turn them into 4 band i.e. multiband dynamic vocal processors. Also. Used in countless blockbuster Hollywood flicks. On all the dialogue. All of it. They don't do anything without it. That's how they sound like they do, Hollywood, style.
    Now I used to do a TV show called, The McGlaughlin Group and McGlaughlin's One On One. The Reason He Sounded so Huge. Was Me. That's Why He Loved Me As His Engineer for 20 Years. Yup 20.. 1981-2001. The Best Years of Our Lives. Before the Sky Fell. And the Real Bummer of That Was. I Was Doing TV Shows in New York City Once a Month. But I Lived in Fort Lauderdale While I Was Living in Washington DC and Working in New York City. Call Me a Jet Set Her If You Will. I Was Working 7 Days a Week. I Love What I Did. I'm Flying up and down the East Coast. Every Week. And I'm Just an Audio Engineer.
    And so I also did the NBC TV Network News. You have to have good voiceover sound for that stuff. But we don't sit there and do nothing to the sound. We process the sound to make it sound good.. So it sounds Professional. Because we are. And you can also be. Really easily. It makes a huge difference. I'm not bullshit you. It takes you to another level. You'll hear the difference for yourself real quickly. And you don't have to turn it up too loud. No louder than normal. But it brings up the bottom to match the middle and prevent the top from peeking out. While enhancing the sound. Smoothing out the sound. And reducing any, most at all, background noise and crappy sounding room acoustics. It gets rid of that. And it's a game changer. It's cheap. They are plentiful. Used ones are just fine. They have no real moving parts except some volume controls.
    As I really love your interviews. The microphone processing is just lacking. So if you just get one. And you put it on the output of your mixer. That'll make a huge difference by itself. It'll do everything I talked about. It's basically what we call an, Audio Console, input Channel Strip. One of 24-36-48. It depended on how much money you got. How big you wanted your… Audio console. To be clear, audio console. As they came in a variety of sizes. And I did get a big enough one until years later. And then couldn't get it in. Because it was too big. So I had to sell it. To another studio owner in New York City. A rising engineering*himself. And now he has the audio console of his dreams. Dave Grohl got one also in 2013 and made a movie about it. Which you can stream live here on UA-cam called Sound City.
    Sound City is, just one of the Best, rock 'n' roll documentary films of all time! As it is all about my Audio Console. Because Dave Grohl bought one very similar to mine from Sound City Studios. Where he and Nirvana recorded their breakthrough album. But they went out of business. And he purchased the audio console that made him famous. And mine is a better version of the same thing. Mine is bigger. Mine is badder ass! Then the one in the movie. But really the same as the one in the movie. By the same maker. Only mine was $9000 more and made for NBC-TV. Where I used it for 12 years. And then won the bid! Holy moly!
    Honestly I never thought I would own one. Now it's being sold off.. My dream gone.
