Classic review of the rally of thousand jumps and stories - the 1000 Lakes Rally 1973 which was the 8th round of the World Rally Championship season. juwra.com/finla...
Nice to hear that Lampinen and Mäkinen actually had some English skills, no "Rallienglanti" to be heard. I guess it attributes to them already spending a lot of time all over the world at this point. Though that didn't help Tommi Mäkinen or Kimi Räikkönen later on! I'm proud to say that I got to sit next to Lampinen back in 1996, for a few laps around the Ahvenisto Circuit. Back then my father drove historic rallys with a Saab 96 two-stroke and one day, out of the blue Lampinen contacted him and asked if he could borrow it for few exhibition laps around the track. I was thirteen at the time and didn't fully realise how big of an honor that was. Lampinen seemed like a very nice and humble man, which I think is the perception of most people who have met him.
Mäkinen did a promo film for Ford in the mid-70s where he delivered a lecture on cornering in excellent English - I think it's on UA-cam, if it's not been taken down? It's called Rally Driving, and also features Mikkola and Roger Clark.

Fantastic film, thankyou for sharing this, have searched all over for this era
It was a suprise, that there were so many people by this special stage in 1973
Damn it would have been awesome being there in Finland in 1973 and watch the 1000 Lakes Rally! Seeing all those awesome Saab two strokes screaming!
Those are V4s already, you can hear it
Presented by Fred Dinenage, so this was probably part of World of Sport or whatever used to be on ITV in those days. Great stuff.
Amazing footage!
some nice close up shots of the cars. TimGreenwood
