Have owned my 2009 for 4 years and a great judge of how good a bike it is has been proved by how it feels after I test rode the latest bikes to find its replacement. From a Multistrada V4S to a Ninja H2 SX, every time I've got back on the old bus it reminds me how smooth, comfortable and fast it is without box fulls of electronics. It's heavy but that disappears on the move. A massively underrated bike, rarely mentioned in the biking media. Till now!
I agree - I have a 2009 1400GTR which is what it is known as in Australia and I am struggling to figure out what I will replace it with. Every time I ride it I am reminded of its effortless power delivery, stability and although she's a heavy girl surprisingly agile in the twisty bits.
For this very same reason I still ride my 1991 Kawasaki xii Voyager.......
I traded my ZZR 1400 in for a GTR as my 64 year old knees needed more comfort as we like to tour.
At first I was worried I had made the wrong decision as loved the ZZR, but having owned the GTR for 6 months now I have to admit I love it. Done the Isle of Wight and Belgium so far on it, going Devon next week and Weymouth in September.
So nice to get to destination and can walk without feeling knee caps are on the wrong way round.
Loads of power just a great bike.

Hi Andy love these classic reviews, it just proves it doesn't have to be all about brand new bikes, and what a bargain in real terms for anyone who wants to tour the globe in absolute comfort. I was lucky enough to own two ZZR 1400 a few years ago so I know what a lovely engine the GTR has and that shaft drive what a bonus. Please keep these classic's going they are really entertaining. I have a 2008 C14 and it's a fantastic bike! Just over 155,000 trouble free miles! Does so many things well! Highly recommend!
Love my 2008 GTR. It’s got nearly 80k miles and has been fairly reliable. I do all my own servicing. Oil and filter is easy, but things like plugs and shim adjustment are a right pain. I changed the original screen to an MRA with spoiler, and had gel insert’s put into the seat to improve comfort. Also added heated grips and a Kawasaki gps mount. It’s a big heavy bike, but I’ve found mine to be fairly agile on B roads and as you say the torque is incredible. Fuel consumption is good, but tyres and brake pads don’t last long.
Thanks for yet another excellent classic bike review, Andy. As a 2014 Concours 14ABS (GTR 1400ABS) owner, I’ve had my fingers crossed that one day you would get around to reviewing this bike. I’ve wondered how you might assess how you would get along with it. I bought mine new in 2014, and have put just over 60,000 miles on it, and yet every time-every time-I finish a ride, I dismount with a grin and smile, “What a great bike!”
I had the ECU flashed by Ivan’s (in North Carolina in the US), and with a performance air filter and Delkevic aftermarket exhaust, it Dynos at 158 BHP and 103 Ft-lbs of torque. For those interested, in 2012 (I think) Kawasaki redesigned the fins on the fairing to deflect engine heat more away from the rider, and included an additional electronic feature-traction control.
A quick glance reveals that, indeed, the bike you reviewed does have an aftermarket seat. The stock seat is a gel-foam padded heat sink that can become quite uncomfortable after a couple of hours of riding. I fitted mine with an aftermarket sports seat, which is less padded but more manageable both for sporting rides and for all-day comfort.
In terms of the agility of the bike, although it may not be as flickable as a 600cc supersport, with practice it is as agile as one needs it to be. (For examples, see some of the Police Rodeo competitions here in the US or Japan where motor officers put their GTRs through the paces of slow-speed courses. 😊
I am looking forward to the next 60,000 miles or more on mine, whilst also logging miles on my 2005 Goldwing ABS (with just over 75,000 miles on it). Meanwhile, I will keep watching for more of your fantastic reviews. Cheers!

Always makes me smile when you class bikes of this age classic. Makes me feel old and the bikes I was riding when I started on bikes you probably class as vintage. Keep up the great content. Perhaps do a couple of bikes from the 1970s?

Lovely machine, proper old school touring machine. Slow maneuvering in car parks when loaded definitely needs care, was on tour with a guy who unfortunately toppled over parking up. Took three of us to get it upright

2015 Connie 14 owner here. Came from a Tiger 1050 because I hated the scary vague feeling of the front end, and the terrible wind buffeting. I went for the 2015 because it was slightly updated from previous models. I’ve got the factory gel touring seat, 2 inch bar risers, Atlas throttle lock, a pipe, and tuned the ECU. Its now putting down 169hp at the rear wheel. I do love the bike, especially when riding alone. It handles well for such a big bike and has good feel on the front end. It is a bit heavy and cumbersome when riding 2 up and gets a bit hairy when navigating parking lots with a passenger. I’m going to be testing out the R1250RT at the end of this month to see how it compares and if it feels a smidge easier to ride 2 up.
2008/2009 bikes weren't electronically limited for speed. They could do 182 with the screen down and luggage off. A bit less with more kit added. 2010+ were limited, electronically, to 155mph. (Though so many people get an ECU flash for this bike by Ivan or Shoodaben [both of which are available in Europe] that, amongst many other things, removes that electronic limiter.) A fair bit of differences between the 08/09 and 2010+ that can all be found on it's Wikipedia page.
A few other things. This bike has a key fob for the ignition, not luggage. One of the first to do so. A bit, needless, really, but nice. It also has a slipper clutch. 158hp/111tq at the crank stock, and with how well it responds to an ECU flash you can get slightly over those numbers AT THE WHEEL, more power and torque at the wheel than a Multistrada V4 and BMW K1600? Yes, please. You just need a flash and a full system or even just headers. So, while she's a big ol' girl she sure can pick up her skirt and run when you want her to, and those taps REALLY open up when that variable valve timing for power kicks in, at about 5k.
I'm quite smitten with my 2010 ABS.
The 5k limit is the secondary set of throttle plates for low speed stability. You can manually remove them I did it on my ZX14. There’s a big difference.
Had the exact same bike bought new back in 2009 and to my mind of thinking it's the best bike I ever had.
Awesome power, comfortable and reasonable running cost.
Unfortunately, I traded mine in for a Triumph Trophy back in 2013, a bad move on my part !
In 2010, the bike underwent a revision where the front fairing was redesigned to keep the rider cooler. It also got traction control, heated grips and an Eco mode that is supposed to allow a bit more fuel mileage. My 2011 has been lowered as my inseam is around 26 inches.
Another fantastic review of a older bike, love these reviews just shows how great old bikes are.
My newest bike is a 2004 CBR600F and I adore it.

When I started riding bikes in the early 70s the frame mounted Windjamer fairing was the state of the art. What a change from today.
Craig Vetter did some cool stuff, particularly the, well-named, Windjammer. Also the Yamaha XS100 Martini, I believe.

Great Video, and great bike. Its a shame the Motorcycle manufacturers are so obsessed with electronic aids and forgetting what is the simple fundamental thing most riders want from a bike.. putting a smile on our face and just get on and ride! The GTR is the last of the golden age of motorcycling.

These classic reviews are great Andy. Personally I don’t feel I want to spend £15k upwards on a new bike with its attendant insurance costs ( esp in London) and I feel something like this is essentially just as good , and much better value

Thanks Mr Flyer, your helmet and gear looks great and video and audio is fine. I envy you being able to ride this type of bike, I'm just too weedy to manage it. In fact years ago before I bought my SV650s I was at a dealer where they tried to sell me a year old GTR1400 and the salesman became very angry and shouted at me for not being able to put the bike on the centre stand hey-ho! I hope you continue to review the older "classic" bikes as many of these are the ones I saw on the roads in my early riding days. :>)
My instructor had one of these when I started doing my lessons. He loved it. Also watching him show us the figure of 8 on one of these was a real treat lol amazed how agile it was for a big bike

I was hoping for this review. Love this bike. Almost bought one. Did a test drive, but didn’t loved it as much as I hoped to. Ended up getting a bmw 1200RT. But for sure I will have one in the future.

This has got a retuned engine of the lump I had in my ZZR1400 I had at the time and that was a beast. This was the comfort touring alternative and as you’ve said fits the bill. Solid bike. 👍

Great classic video review on the 2009 Kawasaki GTR1400. Big motorbike with lots to give. I like all the extra it came with on the Motorbike. Idea for touring or doing the shopping. Won one of those for the weekend at the bike show when they first came out. 795 very comfortable and fast miles in a weekend. Midlands > North Wales > Lakes > winding roads of Yorkshire before a rapid trip back down the M1. Very comfortable and planned on replacing my FJR1300 with one. All it needed was a cruise control and a slightly taller screen

My 2010 was the best bike I ever owned. Toured 2 up around Europe, felt like we’d just ridden around the block, it was that comfortable!
The TPM system is a bit of a pain when the batteries fail, or in cold weather when it gives you a warning of low battery.
Progressive braking is a must, otherwise look forward to warped discs.
They’re the only negatives that I can think of, the positives far outweigh them.
The seat on your test bike is aftermarket. 😉

Love the review, always fancied one of these being a sorts touring fan boy. Only thing when I did my research was they drank fuel. My K1600 was doing over 20mpg more so that was my final decision maker for me
I am so glad this bike is getting some love. It really DOES make you feel alive. I used to own a GTR and my key thoughts were:
1. At motorway speeds I would get 70mpg +
2, The insurance was extremely cheap considering how much bike you have.
3. Its incredibly easy to go fast because its so heavy. The weight stops the front wheel lifting up and makes it so easy to just open the accelerator and race off.
4. With panniers off, the handling is actually really good.
5. It comes with a centre stand, but good luck using it, its wet weight is about 310kg.
I have also had a z1000sx and I have to say, if your doing alot of motorway miles its the far superior machine.
That's a big old weapon Andy and no mistake looked really nice, the only thing that would concern me is what's corroding under the fairing those down pipes would take some reviving . I would have to get under all that plastic to clean it, that would drive me mad 😂good one what a goer 👌👍
Andy another good clip like i have said before and you aswell you dont need all the rider modes etc just more things to go wrong any bike that is up to 20 years if its been looked after is as good as a new one ABS and traction control is all you need. Keep the classic reviews coming my self a honda vfr fan my early vfrs which i have 2 of them are over 25 years old and on carbs no fuel injection still both good bikes.
Have always loved the sound of Japanese in-line 4s. The Connie has the power to bend space and time when you need it to lol.
I bought the 2021, last year and love this bike. I sold the 2004 R1150RT and very close in comparison. But I think I like this one more. I hate electronics, so it's perfect for crunching miles.
This is probably the bike I miss the most. Mine was a 2014. I guess I’m a bit of an electronics snob these days and if they would put some modern tech and cruise on that bike I’d own another and never let it go. I was never a fan of the add on cruise that some offer for it. With an old hand injury and many surgeries, cruise control is a must for me these days on long rides. Miss my Concours.
Owned a 2010 model for 4 years. Loved it.
First major trip from new was Sydney NSW to moto GP Phillip Island in Victoria, two up with all gear for a week trip.
Pulled out to overtake a semi trailer on an open stretch road.
This missile two up with heap gear, went from 100kph in 4th gear to a crazy 200+ in 6th with consumate ease..
I quickly realised my terminal velocity and slowed quickly, the point being these things are insanely quick for a long distance tourer. Very underrated motorcycle, it wasn't light but the weight vanished once the wheels were turning.

I bought the same bike new in 2009. It is a great bike. I still have it. I didn't realize how big it was so big until I bought my 14' Street Triple R last November.

A buddy from work got one in 2013-14. Oh man, what a beast!
I absolutely love my 2016 GTR. I often ask myself, what i would or could replace it with and so far I’m stumped. The keyless system can be a pain especially if you don’t carry a replacement battery. But other than that, it is as you say, a tourer that keeps you smiling and keeps the young uns guessing at the lights ;-)
Switch from the standard 2025 battery to a 2032. The only difference is 0.7mm in height and it stops the 'transponder low battery' warning. It looks to me like the metal tangs inside the fob get weak and don't keep very good contact, the extra height sorts it 👍
Got to agree with you mate...I often watch motorcycle reviews & often think what I would replace it with! The only difference to my mind is the newer motorcycles (BMW 1250RT) have a lot more electronics but that can be a disadvantage if it were to go wrong. Ride safe
Great review as always. Loving the old classics. These GTRs were the alternative emergency service bikes to the BMW RTs. I still see a few [slightly younger ones] knocking around.

Miss my 04 kawasaki zx10r most. Loved that bike. Replaced it with 08 zx10r that had just came out at time. Knew instantly I had made a mistake. To late tho, great video man. On second gtr 1400 nowadays. Great bikes eh? Hello from Scotland 🏴
I live in California, and I purchased a 2019 Concours 14 (as they are called here)
there have been but a few upgrades to the 2009 model that you were riding. mine has two levels of traction control, two levels of ABS, comes with heated grips, and has had a slight bump in horse power and torque. it is a big beast, but it is indeed very comfortable on longer rides and on highways.
Another fantastic very practical bike which I should have owned but alas did not. Yet. Test ridden when they were new.... brilliant.... although I did find myself going supersonic rather too easily 😯 . I used to conveniently forget the throttle really does work both ways !! 😄 Kawasaki are top drawer at producing big motors with serious punch. What a shame it was deleted from the range, imagine an updated developed model now.....

I just finished a 3200 km trip in 4 days thru Alberta, British Columbia, Idaho and Montana camping, on the 2017 Trophy SE. I hit all the backs roads and fast roads and the bike never skipped a beat. Almost 40,000 kms now in 4 years which living in Canada is not too bad 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ I did look at these too but no cruise control was a deal killer especially for a long distant cruiser 👍👍👍

I have a 2012 C14 and it's my favorite bike I've ever owned. Brutally fast and comfortable. It's the Intercontinental ballistic motorcycle!
Also that is definitely an aftermarket seat. Looks like a Sargent seat. Possibly a Corbin

I once owned an 09 GTR and in 2010 rode it from Perth to Darwin 🇦🇺 it was an awesome bike for the distance I had to cover, king of the road bike but did have a couple of issues during ownership but nevertheless a good bike. Now back to riding FJR’S as for me they are easier to maintain. Great video Andy 🤙🇦🇺

Got to agree with your reference to the maintaining the FJR mate, I opted for the GTR as I do my own maintenance & had done valves on a GTR previously. Ride safe
Nice review as usual Andy. Funny to hear an 8 year old bike described as a “classic”, to me classics are bike that are from the 80’s or earlier like the Yamaha FS1e I started riding on in the late 70’s. It would be good if you could get a 70’s bike to try like a Honda CB750, Suzuki GS750 or even better the GT750 two stroke triple.
I’ve often found enclosed body panels to be a double edged sword though, yes they make cleaning the bike easier, but they make maintenance more difficult as it means a lot of fasteners to undo to get at the engine, they can also hide corrosion or make preventive maintenance harder.

@@sergentcolon1you weren't far wrong Nigel, still made up to 2018, so it's actually could be called a 4 Yr old bike. But MF does say any bikes built prior to his test pass.
As if by magic haha, I literally asked on one of your recent videos if we were ever going to see the concours review because I’d seen you post a picture on Instagram. I’m seriously considering this as my next bike on from a 2018 Tracer 900GT. Currently doing a lot of motorway miles my only hesitation is my size, I’m 6ft6 and cannot find a model to test ride! Great review as always too. I’m debating financing a H2SX (not SE) or buying the GTR1400, interested to see how you think they stack up etc
I've never ridden a Kwacker 1400 but I remember when they first came out it was considered a MONSTER of a machine.
I had a Kawasaki 2000 GTR 1000 concourse great bike, but I prefer the V4
over the inline 4 of my intercontinental ballistic missile 2007 Honda Pan St 1300.
Has 30 litre tank so gets 480 km range. I took the GTR 1000 Connie up to Alaska and back with slightly aggressive tires handled great on gravel roads. I just prefer the Honda styling and a must after market Sergeant or Corbin seat and of course after market pipes sets them off. Kawasaki made Connie for a long time great bikes.
Hi, another great review. Never really looked at these before. I like this type of motorcycle. Currently own a BWW K1300GT, similar specs and style. (I think better than an FJR). Have you considered doing a review on the BMW. Not as many about but I think still a great bike.

Nice review I've enjoyed watching. I've got a 2008 model and I like your first impressions of the bike and the ride. It reminds me why I fell for it in the first place. I have different bikes for variety but every time I ride the GTR is a joy ride - I'd blast some Black Sabbath tune on my headset and through a sunny day or stormy weather I'm just smiling all the way thanks to the wide fairings and heated grips. Bike has never let me down and as you said one won't even need any more extras than that.
I'm looking to ride it a few hundred thousand miles until some main component gives up and I hope that I'll be able to replace it with a 2020 ish model down the line.

Great review and fantastic that you are looking at real world useful bikes, you should also look at doing a review of the BMW K1300s another very capable sports tourer that easily run with the newer bikes on the road at the moment.

Nice bikes, loads of torque, but a pain in the ass to do plugs, valve clearances and shims.
Took me all weekend to do the shims on mine. Real pain to do.
I looked at that bike in 2009 actually but ended up with a 2009 BMW K1300GT, (which I still own) , as the Kawasaki didn't have cruise control or heated grips and seats that I wanted for long distance touring. But I agree a well maintained bike from the era is just as nice as a current bike without all the over the top electronics to worry about. Cheers!

Yes me too - unfortunately it's difficult logistically for me to get older bikes - I'm lucky to have this source of up to 20 year old machines from SuperBike factory....

Euro 4/5 was what ended it, combined with the shrinking of the tourer market.
I bought one Andy just before the first lockdown for me and Mrs Goth to go to Italy on I loved it alas had to sell its a rocket ship
I loved my zx14. I tested one of these and felt it was too tamed in comparison. Very comfortable though. For me, the ZX14, if it came with factory fitted frameless panniers, would have been perfect.
Get LSL ABM bar riser kit for the ZX14R. It will make it a GTR
@@rockyp3917 I did and not quite a gtr but a hell of a lot more comfy than standard riding position. Just had to swap clutch line and use the supplied front brake line.. mounting the reservoirs is a bit of a pain but I used mirror h/bar clamps with original brackets and perfect fit, miss the fairing easily. It does affect the steering lock a bit but nothing major . 👍😉
Morning Andy, I have one at the moment, 08, and it rocks, at 165bhp (PC3 filter and endcan) she will stay with most things on the road! And drag peg with ease, on my own or 2up ! Amazing bike !
Absolute 'Bentley' of a bike! Were I facing a working breakfast beside Lake Como with the latest Doris McStarlet tomorrow morning, & given the choice of taking along either this beauty, a new Interceptor freshly PD'd out the crate, or even a 470lb. promissory note from some ethereal BSA dealer on Mars, I think I know where my money would be going! : )

I guess BMW has the market to itself these days with the RT, no one else seems to make a “sensibly” priced shaft driven sports tourer anymore 🙁.

Beautiful review, I have always loved the big Kawasakis, I never got one though because I was intinidated by the sheer power. I even had two cats that were called Kawa and Saki.

Awww Andy, this is rubbing salt in the wounds for me. I part exchanged my second GTR for a new r1250gs te in march and I am missing it so much, it really does fit me perfectly and looks wise nothing compares, the rush after 6000rpm is addictive and the torque just makes an easy ride. The only negative I would say is the numbers on the speedo are a bit small.
I'm not saying the gs is a bad bike, I don't think there is such a thing these days but for me it really is an awful bike, I just got suckered into the gs hype.
I can only have one bike and I am currently looking for another GTR or failing that, a decent low mile FJR and luckily, some change back.

Interesting camera placement ... I tried the same, but because of the slight curve of my windscreen the suction cup would gradually loosen over time.

I got myself a new scorpion helmet recently, it is probably the most comfortable helmet I have ever had for my particular head size and shape, but it is definitely not the quietest helmet in the price range.
These bikes are great value and just as good for most of us. I especially like the Boris non pc versions 🤣🤣

My daily rider: 2008 GTR. It sucks that I have to keep it around 3grand most of the time. When sneaky, on a straight road, I've seen 135 mph happen, accidentally.
I totally agree, I’ve sold my new Ducati and bought a ZZR 1400 and a Triumph tiger explorer for the same money .
STILL doesn't have cruise control in 2022, but its an awesome bike.

That’s a beautiful bike.
My dream bike is either a Concours or a Hyabusa. The emotional side says I love Suzuki and want arguably their most iconic bike, and the rational side says the Concours is more comfortable, factory luggage, more comfortable, and shaft-driven.
