The introduction “Hi, I’m Old Norse specialist Dr Jackson Crawford “ has always been a signal that I could expect a scholarly, entertaining video on Old Norse language, culture, and the Sagas. Your channel is an intellectual island in a sea of teenage make-up tutorials, screaming gamers and snake-oil salesman hawking bones carved with curses instead of blessings. I subscribe (and support) your channel, Word Safari with Dr Luke Gordon and a few others because of the expertise so generously given. Do not let small minded, jealous internet trolls cancel your hard earned achievements. If I’m ever lucky enough to see you at a BBQ, I would buy you a Coke, shake your hand and thank you for the wonderful content set against some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Dr = Drengr. Own it!

Dr. Crawford, as someone has had similar conversations with doctors in different field ranging from family medicine (ironically Dr. Jones), veterinary medicine, education, etc; I have learned that most don't think it pretentious that someone outside the human medical field calls themselves a doctor when they have put in the work to get a doctorate. If they know you hold a doctorate, then most will respect that and call you by your title Doctor. So keep on Dr. Crawford!

The fact you call yourself doctor is honestly one of the reasons I gravitated to your channel. There are tons of unqualified UA-camrs out there making videos on Old Norse and other Germanic languages and cultures who paint themselves as academics, and pass off their unsubstantiated dribble as legitimate scholarly research.

For the record, I've never thought using your title when speaking about your area of expertise ever came off as pretentious. In fact, one of the reasons I subscribed to your channel was because you are an expert, and not some random guy on youtube presenting their own opinions as historical fact. I hope you still use 'Dr' in your video titles at least, so newcomers will know they're viewing quality, educational content.

As a physician, the only time I have a problem with folks calling themselves doctor is when they come into my patients room and do so, and don't hold an MD/DO. This just creates a confusing and potentially dangerous situation. Anywhere else, go for it! You have absolutely earned that title, and MD/DOs don't hold exclusive rights to it!

To me, if "doctor" is misleading, it's because people don't generally understand it. It seems to me like the only way to combat that is to make people acquainted with other uses of the word, and one way to do that is with titles. I think it's really only pretentious if you're *insistent* on being called "doctor", but even that isn't that bad in my mind.

    • @paguristes5278
      @paguristes5278 2 роки тому

Should be ignored as the title doctor originates (ca 13th century) as an academic title. from docere (latin) to teach - in deed a licence to teach (licentia ubique docendi). Originating from the Universities of Paris and Bologna (law, theology and medicine). You teach and espouse a philosophical doctrine. To allow physicians to use the title even when they may not have attained a doctoral level of learning might be regarded as a 'bone of contention' as far back as Shakespear's use of the title. You are not a quack.

I found the attitude regarding someone other than medical doctors calling themselves "Dr." to be more of a U.S. phenomenon. Although from the U.S., I got my Ph.D. (Philosophy) in the UK, and I was always referred to as "Dr." with no issues whatsoever. They understood the time and effort I put in to achieve it and they would use it as a term of respect. When I returned to the U.S. there did seem to be some confusion that I was a "Dr." and yet wasn't in the medical field. I think this is unfortunate. I wish there was more respect for those that have put forth the time, energy, and effort to achieve this (I am the first person in my family to get anything beyond a Technical College diploma, so for me, my Ph.D. has been a significant personal achievement).

  • @knight907

Your use of the title “doctor” has NEVER seemed pretentious or unreasonably demanding of respect. When you’re talking about Norse literature, introducing yourself as “doctor” is simply providing a very quick establishment of your credentials to do so, and you absolutely should continue to do it. It’s a simple statement of fact, and not doing it leaves out a relatively important piece of information that really should be conveyed. In any other context, yes, it would be pretty silly, but in your videos, it’s exactly appropriate and the right thing to do. 👍

Thank you for sharing your perspective. During my own 36-year career as a full-time college/university professor, I have tried to get the students to address me simply by my first name. It is striking how many students resist this request. With grad students, I even have the joke that if they continue to address me as "Professor Sprouse," then I will have to address them as "Student Jones" or whatever. In recent years, I've become a bit more laid back, when it was pointed out to me that for some students, it is important to THEM that they address the faculty with the title "Professor" or "Dr." because it makes them feel important to assert that they are "worthy" of being taught by someone with this status. Jackson, I think that all of your viewers (including me) highly value the erudition and clarity your videos exhibit. For some, it may be comforting to have that erudition re-enforced through your academic title. P.S. If we ever meet in person, PLEASE just call me "Rex."

When I had attained my masters, defended my thesis, and was planning my return trip to America, I was chastised by one of my "instructors" and PhD for not continuing to a doctorate in my field of study. I stood in an office and allowed him to spew his vitriol for nearly 20 minutes. At then end, he asked me Why? Why could I not continue my education. I could be just like him. I told him, at a very tender age, that it was because I would turn out just like him that I did not continue my education. And then I went back home, pouted for a year because I had an advanced degree in a field I could not longer find any enjoyment in, and then worked in it until I was 30 and walked out because of how I had to beg for research grants. I've never looked back. I've worked in so many different jobs, but they were that, just jobs. I began writing books about six years ago and I was surprised to find, I'm pretty good at it. I've always been good at the technical writing of scientific papers, but fiction... well, that's real work.
I like your videos and catch them when I can. I enjoy them.

Dr Jackson would here, by me, never be addressed as doctor. But in a UA-cam video, one has to make one's credentials clear. And when no longer a lecturer, the PhD is the shorthand for saying "I not only know the subject, I also have done my dissertation."

Also, you are so incredibly different from most academics. You share the knowledge openly and want to give it to everyone. Dear Dr. Crawford,
Please, please, do not in any way get roped into guilt trips about referring to yourself as "Doctor". You sir, have EARNED that title, you have done your research within graduate school and successfully defended your dissertation, that title is rightfully yours and do not let anyone try to take that away from you. As for comparing yourself to "medical doctors", you are more of a doctor than they are. You defended your dissertation on original research, while they went to a "trade school" for medicine. Calling a medical professional "Doctor" is merely a courtesy. Of course, the situation and the circumstances change for using that title, (you made an excellent point about not feeling it necessary to introduce yourself as Dr. Jackson Crawford at restaurants or dinner parties or some other social event). On your UA-cam channel, while in the process of teaching, you are absolutely justified in using your title. You are a teacher after all, and a damn good one! The title of "Doctor" is rightfully yours sir, you can be proud of that.
Take care and wishing you all the best.

To a retired linguist (translator, transcriber, occasionally impromptu interpreter) who would fain be a real philologist, your engaging way of sharing your expertise seems to be beneficial. You demonstrate for young folk that the study of languages, especially of languages that are a bit off the beaten track, is worth their best efforts. That is the sort of teaching that adds luster to the title Doctor.

I certainly appreciate and respect your thinking on this, and I am disappointed that there are folks who apparently took offense. It has always been my understanding that titles such as doctor for Ph.D.'s or master in the trades reflect personal achievement and expertise rather than general authority or standing.
I would, however, suggest to you that being addressed as doctor could be handled in much the same manner as saluting in the military: "The senior should never expect it, and the junior should never forget it."
I, for one, have no problem addressing you as Doctor Crawford until such time as you would become familiar. You worked for it, you earned it, and I value what you are doing with it here and on Patreon.
    So, thank you, Dr. Crawford!

One of the reasons I was drawn to your videos in the first place was knowing that you had an advanced degree in the field rather than some random guy spreading misinformation. Not once did I ever feel like you were pretentious or trying to seem better-than due to your credentials; your presentation of information has always been accessible and informative, unlike many difficult to access and difficult to understand papers written for academic journals or books. And, as someone currently finishing my bachelors degree with the intent to go to grad school, your perspectives on academia have been helpful in demystifying the world that I'm headed towards.

    Dear Dr. Crawford,
Longtime fan of your work here. I started watching you not long before I applied for the Linguistics program at Georgetown, in part because of your incredibly detailed lectures on PIE, Old Norse, and historical Linguistics in general. I'm currently getting my MA in Linguistics at Georgetown, and I completely understand (and reject) the notion that it's inherently pretentious to tout one's education. Spending five years researching, publishing, and defending one's expertise is certainly an accomplishment that entitles one to the "rank" of Doctor, and I also agree that it's context-specific as to when to insist upon its use.
I'd love to get my PhD someday, thanks in no small part to your work. Until then, I wholeheartedly respect and celebrate the achievements of my colleagues who've successfully defended, and I'll gladly accord them the title as often as it's warranted.
    Best,
    John D.
    MA student, Department of Linguistics
    Georgetown University

I appreciate your reflection on this (rather arcane) issue. Soon after I got my degree in History, I sometimes jokingly signed my name with “PhD BFD” because I felt that people on both sides of the “academic divide” tended to view the “doctorate” as some exalted status. The same goes with “Professor.” Whenever someone asks what I do, I don’t mention the rank but simply say I teach history.

Old Norse is important to me because it's a culture that shaped Earth's history. It deserves to be preserved, it's uniqueness and the roles it plays into much of today's time, imagine what the world would be like if Vikings never existed?? And as a norse pagan, you've helped me grow spiritually, and grow closer to the Norse gods that have called out to me for years. Thank you so much, even if you think that your time has been wasted or that Old Norse is something unimportant, know that i think you're wrong, and i deeply and sincerely appreciate all your hard work and effort on and off of this platform to preserve such a wonderful culture!! Much love from Georgia!

Coming from one of those UA-camrs who isn’t a doctor, but an amateur mythologian, your work and insights are incredibly valuable.
The idea that anyone would hold themselves “over” you in any way is absurd, especially when it comes to this area in which you are so clearly an expert.
Keep up the good work, Doctor-but-not-better-than-me Crawford.

It is an honorific bestowed on someone who has dedicated their life and education to deep and intense study of a subject that not just anyone can or will be able to accomplish. Anyone who get twisted over this has issues that need to be worked on. Cheers Doc. Keep up the good work boss.

I practiced in the Air Force as a Dentist for 20 years and there we were called Dr.or by our rank. Usually junior officers such as Captains preferred the the title Dr. but if you were a LtCol or Col, you preferred the rank! After retiring and having no license in the state where I was living, and not willing to go through the tedious process of getting a local license, I go a jereob with and airline working there for 20 years ending as an instructor/trainer. I more than enjoyed the job and people were shocked that I was a "Doctor"! My best moment of my career was dealing with a very difficult passenger who was an MD. He was shouting how he was fed up with dealing with morons. The Service Director at the gate told him tha Ct the 3 people he was dealing with were far from morons. She pointed out that I was a dentist who possessed a DMD, she was a Phd in Germanic languages and had taught at Amherst College for 22 years and the other agent had an LL.D from USC and all 3 of us were on our second career. It sure shut him up.

As a pretty-certainly-dropping-out PhD student I _really_ appreciate hearing this from you - looking over my troubled career, I feel like the power and prestige of titles in academia (and my hunger for them) have factored all too heavily into making decisions that hurt me and revering people who didn't especially deserve it. And the sting of a well-intentioned relative jokingly calling me "Dr Walker" while I'm thinking about how likely it is that I'll never be who they think I am... oof.
Anyway none of this is meant to diminish the work you or any other Dr has done for their PhD - it really is an achievement to be proud of. Not necessarily any less of an achievement than a medical doctor's either. I certainly don't think the First Lady needs to be taken down a peg. But this video helped me feel better about myself, so thank you.

Dr Jackson Crawford, you deserve the title because you have done the work. Part of the United States has been anti-intellectual for decades and looks for any way to diss the learned. All your followers would call you Doctor happily. I also think that you deserved the title of Professor given what it means in the USA when you were teaching at various universities. You deserve the respect inherent in both these titles.
