You got it. The purpose of the exercises here is to first and foremost train the spine - then work on the other muscles because the spine is the heart of your body. The stronger the spine, the more power you can produce. Old school guys spent lots of time on their thoracic which is something people are lacking these days.
Hey fun fact guys. He is fully aware that his back is bending! and no it is not because his form is bad or he’s doing these movements wrong. These are old school exercises that people used to do a lot, with a focus on actually strengthening the muscles that support the spine.
On point, and they are all safe if done properly and with the proper weight. One issue might be is that we often get too prideful about how much steel we can move, and try a zercher deadlift at 80% of our 1RM
Many of these exercises are primarily done to strengthen the spine (lumbar & thoracic spine) to withstand stress, which actually make me less prone any back problems or injuries. Notice that I use VERY light weights here (I could go 2-4x in many exercises), but I am not building shoulders and biceps here - I am actually building the spine which is something old school spent lots of time on.
You should really read up on the old school bodybuilders. They were fucking strong as oxes. Most of them could do many pull-ups at large amounts of weight, they were stupid strong and no steroids. No bodybuilder these days could compare. Look at Gironda if you don't believe me.
If you do them without knowing their bio mechanics, of course you are going to get hurt. If I am doing a Cat row... I know... My lower back is under risk... So i brace my core... And try to keep lumbar spine straight and bend only at thoracic spine...
Years ago, I tried experimenting with Zercher Squats and Zerchers Deads from low set pins in a rack(going from the floor looks CRAZY). I stopped doing them after I started developing black and blue bruising inside the crook of my arms and intermittent tingling and numbness in my fingers and hands. Eventually I tried them again with a heavily padded 6" PVC pipe overlaying the bar. TOTALLY different ballgame. It allows for (and encourages) the most natural good posture while performing upright style Squats, Lunges, and Walking Lunges.
They can be straining for the lumbar back if the thoracic spine doesn't take most of the force. With most old school exercises the point was to actually build strength in the thoracic spine
U seem very well conditioned and i think it's fairly ez for u Vahva. and probably wouldn't hurt u but for an average inflexible person these are dangerous XD
Better every day my friend. Yoga backbends would help you train for a lot of these. It's almost like a frontal extension with the glutes as your base. You don't even feel the lumbar.
My back is in the best shape so far. VAHVA Fitness The fact that you're withstanding stress in these positions at all is dangerous and disturbing. You can't build your bones and spinal discs like you would with muscles. Don't be stupid, take care of your body before you regret it in the 50'a and 60's
i don't mean to hate or anything , but you can't build you thoracic spine , since its mostly a bone and gel disc formation , what you may be able to strengthen is the muscles surrounding your thoracic spine however i personally think that probably there are way more efficient and less stressing exercises (even though i am no physical educator , i am just a physician , also sorry for the poor english , it is my second language).
I mean not really. He’s showing movements that people used to do, and doing them how they’re supposed to be done. Elgin uses clips of people doing movements incorrectly.

That... And also because you HAD to lift with proper form or you were gonna get messed up by the weight or the execution of the exercise itself. Good comment. 😎😎😎👍👍👍🍺🍺🍺🍺🍻🍻🍻🍷🍷🍷
very impressive. This is advanced stuff and not for regular people. Probably requires a lot of mobility and strength before even thinking of attempting this.

Thanks! Gymnast use similar exercise (jefferson curl) to mobilize their lower back and hamstrings. Strongmen do similar movement when they lift atlas stones. It's only when you call the exercise a "deadlift" and do it with a barbell when people lose their minds!
Why are you disliking this? He is purely demonstrating the movements, not recommending them. Glad we have so many superhealthy Sherlocks in the comment section pointing out the potential dangers of the exercises... Great vid man, will try the pinch grip dls :O
I would like to add a warning, I did the deadlift, but I did not have plastic weights. I used 2 45lb plates on an Olympic bar and knocked out a set of 10. Being 63 I was pretty damn proud of myself. I felt fine when I did them but the next day my trigger and middle finger at the second joint began to hurt, After a couple of days I realized I had strained it pretty good. What happens is you have to curl your fingers around the lip of the plate and the lip digs in pretty good, real good on your weak hand. Only use weights like he has in the picture. I will do them again except next time roll up a towel so there is not an edge to cause the strain
Hi, the purpose of the pullover here was to stretch the lats & ribcage. Old school guys would do partial rep pullovers after finishing their 20 rep back squat when they were breathing heavy.
VAHVA Fitness wtf is old school ??? crossfitters invented some shit? all weightlifting and powerlifting programs are old school !!! im sick and tired of guys who tell «old school» that and.this !!! put some flesh on that skinny body men and go the gym and learn.something about old school ! stupid crossfitter
We called those Pullovers by the name "Nosebreakers" cuz that's what would happen to anyone weak enough to drop the weight at the top of the move. Didn't realize those were considered old. Plenty of people still do that from what I see.
You need to use super light weights. I can go really heavy with press/squat, but notice that I am using VERY LIGHT weights here. Why? Because the purpose is to train the spine, not the conventional muscles!
zercher squat is good, IMHO. The backbend is insane. Dumbbell pullover gives nice chest definition and as far as I can see the aesthetic change in your chest is the only reason for it, but it hurts the hell out of my left shoulder so I no longer do it.
As he said he uses very light weights (a 30 kgs bar...). And just think when you perform a 150 kgs + deadlift with a bad/average execution...also valid for squat as well. I couldn't count how many I've seen at the gym.... Anyway that guy is stronger than 98% of us, has a better mobility and knows what he does.
Several of these exercise are very effective if done correctly. This was a nice try but to do correctly need to understand the rational for the movement. Foe example the cheat curl is primarily to get the weight up to the shoulder so you can perform a slow downward movement.
The disrespect in this comment section is too much. Old time strongmen are some of the strongest people in human history, in a time without steroids they've achieved things that we've never come close to today.
I do a lot of these lifts today, and it is because I wanted my back to be strengthened. Furthermore, conventional lifts just aren't fun, and these lifts are great for uses in sport, as well as bodybuilding. In addition to everyone in the comment section saying this will lead to back issues.... etc. Don't do these these lifts then. I will continue to do them because I don't have back pain or issues at all.
Also remember to focus on the conventional lifts because they do work! And stay safe and within your limits. These exercises are supposed to be done with very light weights, good execution and not on a regular basis
VAHVA Fitness the arched overhead press looks like it would hurt your lumbar and be unstable with the angle of the lift, the bar should be over mid foot but it isn’t with the arched overhead press, as for the cheat curl, that’s how you tear a bicep
Travis Kraft I... uh.. I sorta disagree with the third one.. Bit the rest are cool. I've always like doing standing military presses to and barbell arm rows.
You can really see the ignorance in the comment section. This exercises have a rich history in classical circus strongman. They are definitely for the advanced athlete but with the right body awareness they are all safe You need to understand that strength is joint angle specific. And that learning how to safely move load whilst in a compromised position (like a non-flat back) will hugely benfit overall strength Modern day strongman for example, most of their overhead presses with the log are done with an arched back, and the stone lifts are done with a rounded upper back. And they have some of the strongest backs in the world If you don't like these exercises or don't understand them then don't do them. But don't shit on them if you know nothing about their history
Love the oldschool, everything was raw and real back then because drugs where not existend, and a lot of them where stronger than a lot of enhanced guys today, i look at then for real naturell inspiration, anyway good videi
Zercher Squats are great if done properly (I sometimes do these in uni-lateral fashion using the Smith-Machine), it is basically a Goblet Squat. The Zercher Deadlift, please do NOT, horrible for your back, easily prone to injuries. The rest of the exercises used to be more of a theatrical nature in the past performed by 'strong-men' not necessarily for body-building.
I'm all for training the old school way for size and strength. Including exercises physical therapists say are risky. But if you don't have any current injuries or physiological structure issues and warm up properly, use good form, work at your level and not overtrain, etc. Barbell squating, deadlifting, Vertical and horizontal pressing and rowing all with a barbell, as well as performing weighted chins and dips are fine. They are the most effect but dips certainly aren't for everyone. However leaning back that far while overhead pressing and that exercise called the backbend looks especially dangerous regardless if everything else is in place. I know that's how they use to train but I wouldn't. Good video!
Thanks Eric! Back bend is not recommended for sure but... Many of these exercises are primarily done to strengthen the spine (thoracic spine) to withstand stress, which actually make me less prone any back problems or injuries. Notice that I use very light weights here (I could go 2-4x in many exercises), but I am not building shoulders and biceps here - I am actually building the thoracic spine which is something old school spent lots of time on.
Vahva Fitness thanks for the reply. If they are for protecting your spine then I'm glad I accidently found your channel. I see no one performing or mentioning those exercises anywhere.Looks like I'll be studying up on how to implement them myself in the future. An once of prevention is worth a pound of cure, or in my case a career saver.
Thank you for watching! The rationale behind these exercises is explained in more detail in this blog post ➞ bit.ly/oldschoolstrength
Please dont teach people half this dangerous stuff
This exercises are false.. For example cat row isn't healthy for Human structure..
People complaining that these are bad for your back but sit down hunched over for 8+ hours a day..
How would you know?
Hybrid Athletix it’s different, because your spine is built for that and not the excess weight
You can train smartly avoiding damages by sitting down 8 hours...
lol exactly...
or you know, workout, but not with pointlessly risky exercises.

You got it. The purpose of the exercises here is to first and foremost train the spine - then work on the other muscles because the spine is the heart of your body. This is correct! I don't recommend all of them, but proper strengthening of the spine is missing from many people's training nowadays
On point, and they are all safe if done properly and with the proper weight. One issue might be is that we often get too prideful about how much steel we can move, and try a zercher deadlift at 80% of our 1RM
There's a reason that these exercises have fallen out of favour.
never falled ,l started training i late 70's and still train but never forgot these exercixes
Nick Kraw : All are still being done today.
They are dangerous for you back , round spine !
Dan Rowley I never saw someone doing then
Strongmen still do these exercises to this day idiots, so sto saying there is a reason they were abbandoned.
10 ways to hurt your back like an old school bodybuilder ;)
Pullovers are still done nowadays

i was thinking the same to

They can be straining for the lumbar back if the thoracic spine doesn't take most of the force. With most old school exercises the point was to actually build strength in the thoracic spine

backbender looks totally unhealthy
It's brutal and I don't recommend it. It was a feat of strength and display of athleticism.
Crossfit: do heavy exercises without proper form.
Not even CrossFit want to have these!
welcome to fabolous snap city !

Cat row.. Elgintensity would love that

Thanks man! I think many of them are legit, but the back bend is mostly something to show off
VAHVA Fitness Agreed. Still, as you pointed out, they are pretty advanced moves:D
This was such a cool video and im sosorry for your joints after backbends ahahah
zercher squats is great, doing that every now and then.. pinch deadlift looks great 👍💪
Thank you ari
I love your exercises
Best of early 60s: The Bullworker. Excellent for isometric exercises.
Would love to try that!
Was this a troll video?
Great video, ignore the teenagers who show negativity. They know nothing about bodybuilding.
Thank you Swolbraham
The pinch grip deadlift seems quite good, as long as you're sensible and not trying to lift 400lbs with the pinch grip.
Pinch grip is excellent because your grip will break very fast if you use too much weight
I like the video, keep doing what you do
Thank you Edward, will do.
pull overs need more range of motion
matt jameson but it is a great exerxise
Hi, the purpose of the pullover here was to stretch the lats & ribcage. Old school guys would do partial rep pullovers after finishing their 20 rep back squat when they were breathing heavy.
VAHVA Fitness wtf is old school ??? crossfitters invented some shit? all weightlifting and powerlifting programs are old school !!! im sick and tired of guys who tell «old school» that and.this !!! put some flesh on that skinny body men and go the gym and learn.something about old school ! stupid crossfitter
thanks for filming this vahva .. but remember ; that the injuiries is coming this harsh exercise .. be careful
We called those Pullovers by the name "Nosebreakers" cuz that's what would happen to anyone weak enough to drop the weight at the top of the move. Didn't realize those were considered old. Plenty of people still do that from what I see.
If this was bad for his back. I am sure he would notice within seconds. Looks like its building strength to me :-)
I've never seen these excercises before , Why they aren't more popular?
Some of them are. Lat pulldowns and zercher squats are still done, and cheat curls as well. The front press is done by gymnasts.
the good ones like the overhead press and front squats are still used. and to be fair cheat curls arent really a separate exercise lol
i feel like if i did some of these that my back would snap in half and it just makes me cringe juat thinking about it
You need to use super light weights. I can go really heavy with press/squat, but notice that I am using VERY LIGHT weights here. Why? Because the purpose is to train the spine, not the conventional muscles!
Glad i saw this before i did lower spine day
I love old school exercise
I will attempt the pinch deadlift with 500 this week
zercher squat is good, IMHO. The backbend is insane. Dumbbell pullover gives nice chest definition and as far as I can see the aesthetic change in your chest is the only reason for it, but it hurts the hell out of my left shoulder so I no longer do it.
The pain in the shoulder is something you could definitely assess. I personally like the pullover and it's great for mobility
Phenomenal history lesson💯💯💪💪💯💯
Thanks mike!
respect for being barefoot!
please explain to people why we shouldn't wear shoes.
well done exercises.
good luck
Thank you artur
10 ways to get a herniated disc.
Or 10 ways to not get one!
Dear lord... good thing we left those exercises in the past where they belong
Legit pullovers and zercher squats were the only good ones there
I personally like the arched OHP, great for the thoracic spine if you do it right. Also power bicep curls are pretty common and good full body lift
VAHVA Fitness the arched overhead press looks like it would hurt your lumbar and be unstable with the angle of the lift, the bar should be over mid foot but it isn’t with the arched overhead press, as for the cheat curl, that’s how you tear a bicep
Proof that old school isn't always better.
just way more challenging and makes you work for ever set but ya your right . modern lifting is easier
more challenging and more dangerous in my opinion since the lifters were still learning the techniques to build muscle
The first exercise makes my back hurt just by watching
Euro is a fucking stud
Dude knows his shit .
I love this channel I have learned a shit ton from watching thanks bro
Thank you Michael!
This was interesting.
Thank you Travis
VAHVA Fitness :'(
Adobong manok
Travis Kraft I... uh.. I sorta disagree with the third one.. Bit the rest are cool. I've always like doing standing military presses to and barbell arm rows.
@Davina Rose Fan Yes, it does. Good catch.
hope he payed a visit to the ortho after snapping his shit up
My back is all good - and one of the reasons is because I actually strengthen the spine. Notice that I am using relatively light weights here.
I really love your athletic body man
You can really see the ignorance in the comment section. This exercises have a rich history in classical circus strongman. They are definitely for the advanced athlete but with the right body awareness they are all safe
You need to understand that strength is joint angle specific. And that learning how to safely move load whilst in a compromised position (like a non-flat back) will hugely benfit overall strength
Modern day strongman for example, most of their overhead presses with the log are done with an arched back, and the stone lifts are done with a rounded upper back. And they have some of the strongest backs in the world
If you don't like these exercises or don't understand them then don't do them. But don't shit on them if you know nothing about their history
Emir EC on point
I think there is a reason almost all of these are forgotten
Zercher squat, but Zercher deadlift...I did not know this exercise!
hé looks fit as fuck lol all these keyboard warrior here.. hé is doing something right
Yo good stuff !!
Thank you Dominick S!
2.19 , iff you want to destroy your back , do this
daniel nunes all the movements will break your back.
Zercher deadlift should be approach with caution but it's basically not much different from strong men lifting their atlas stones with a round back
Amazing bro
Thank you man
I love old school
keep doing that and you wont be able to workout soon
Many of these exercises are primarily done to strengthen the spine (lumbar & thoracic spine) to withstand stress, which actually make me less prone any back problems or injuries. Notice that I use VERY light weights here (I could go 2-4x in many exercises), but I am not building shoulders and biceps here - I am actually building the spine which is something old school spent lots of time on.
VAHVA Fitness putting strain on the spine isn’t going to strengthen it......
they are old school for a reason
