  • Back with more Alphacore talk. Tried really hard to not have this just be a list of complaints and questions but... well, you'll see.
The 3rd entry in Eric July's Rippaverse. Written by Chuck Dixon, penciled by Joe Bennett and lettered by Eric Weathers.
    Synopsis from Rippaverse.com:
"The Except team, known as Alphacore, is called in to take care of Except-related problems that the Florespark Police are too outgunned to handle. But not everyone is a fan of their superpowered heroics, and not all of them are on the opposite side of the law. So when a thwarted bank bombing launches an investigation that spins into a string of murders-by-Except, Bryan Solari, Braxwell, and Ingrid Valdez must work alongside fans and non-fans alike to uncover the mystery of who has been the puppetmaster pulling the strings behind these crimes.
How does Alphacore operate? Who is on the team beyond our three main heroes? And who will they discover is behind this recent string of felonies?"

    Edited:
I disagree that about needing to know all the character's origin stories? Wolverine's powers weren't fully revealed for 2 years after his introduction, his backstory didn't come out until 16 years after the character was introduced. Batman didn't get his full origin story until Frank Miller's "Year One" in 1987, even though he was introduced in 1939. Most if not all of the most well known superheroes that we have today have had their backstories and origins honed over decades. Superman was first introduced in 1939, but he could basically do anything the writers imagined and everyone on his home planet could do what he did. It wasn't until the 1960s that it was established that his powers came from Earth's yellow Sun. We know enough about their powersets and backstories to understand the story being told in the specific books in which they have appeared.
If Braxwell gained his powers from eating a bowl of Fruity Pebbles, would that have any bearing on the story in Alphacore? If Bryan Solari is cloned human from government experiments, does that change anything either? If Valdez has the power to make any man fall in love with her by having sex with him, is that relevant to the story thus far? If Braxwell can speak and read any language he encounter's would that make a difference?

We didn't know his origins but we knew what his powers were. Big difference

@@HiddenHandMedia How many comics was Superman in before we knew he could fly? Superman was introduced to the public in Action Comics #1 which was released in 1938... While it is hinted that he could fly by the art in a comic book from 1941, it wasn't cannon until 1943! Superman's powerset started off as being able to do anything the artists and writers could think of. Which is why even in the second Superman movie, Superman pulls the S off his chest, where it grows into a transparent sheet that wraps around one of three Kryptonians, and makes the him fall to the ground... Which one of Superman's official canon powers was that? And was it introduced in his first or second book?
My point is that all of the most popular superheroes did not explain or even have an official canonical set of powers in their first or second issues. Yet you pretend like that is some major proof that ISOM sucks when his books follow the format of his full powerset being revealed over time. This is something anime, Manga, movies, TV shows, books, video games, and other superhero comic books do all the time, but you pretend it is bad writing on Eric's part. You, Warts are pathetic for repeating this garbage.

Thanks for being one of the very few reviewers that's being honest about this book. The Rippaverse has this issue of "let the reader figure it out" and it's not working. You gotta give your readers something to actually work with. Instead of having to buy overpriced trading cards, put an character info page in the front or back of the comic. Like 90s X-Men or manga.

Hey, thank YOU for the view and saying something so encouraging for a small timer like me!
I can absolutely understand and even get behind bread crumbs and foreshadowing, but foreshadowing would be showing eyes in the dark or a monkey paw in issue 1 of Isom, before introducing the hell monkeys in issue 2. I don't want to get ahead of myself in reviewing the Isom trilogy, but the way they were introduced was jarring to me because they weren't foreshadowed.
Right now, three books and 304 pages in, there aren't really breadcrumbs, it's just an endless series of "and then THIS happened!"

@@Frost_Comics yep. I don't think the Rippaverse has the luxury of taking their time with the basics of world building. Especially with how they're currently releasing books. People are already jumping ship and it's showing in the sales. I hope the Yaira and Goodyng books do better, but they gotta give the reader something to work with.

@@NoneNone-oy3sz Five Nights at Freddy's had crappy graphics, mediocre and repetitive gameplay, but it became a multi-million dollar franchise. Compare that to similar trends like Among Us and Fall Guys. Similarly low graphics and gameplay that was fun for a bit, but nobody plays either anymore. They had their time in the spotlight and were forgotten about, but FNAF kept making the same game over and over only to have its fanbase continually grow. The reason for this was the lore that was hidden within the games that had fans working to figure out the story, how the games fit together, and they are still trying to piece together a definitive timeline. Because the fans had to work for it rather than have it spoon fed to them, they felt more rewarded when they figured something out that was later confirmed in a game, book, or other source. It creates a more immersive and rewarding experience when you are given all the information to figure it out on your own.

Lol, thank you. But! I will say the dialogue was at least very distinct. Everyone sounded unique instead of how everyone in Isom sort of wounds like July. I also liked the gag with Galvan biting his tongue and it messing up his swearing. The plot was well paced, I just had no investment in it because the characters were made out of cardboard.
At the same time I teeter back and forth between a lower score and my 3 depending on how frustrated I feel. Usually my score dips lower after I read someone talk about how awesome of a character Braxwell is. Lol
