I was having a ton of issues with my 2003 Montero sport and thought all hope was lost... For those who are stuck there are two ways I've heard work for the Montero. One is the on and off key method, the other is pressing the hazard lights six times. I tried both methods for hours on my own with no luck.
Try getting someone to help you. Once I had someone to put the key in and turn it correctly while I aggressively shoved the paper clip into slots 1 and 4 it worked first try. I would say if it's not working try getting a jumper wire rather than the paper clip its most likely due to the fact that your not getting a connection. Also test that the obd connector is working by plugging in a reader. First time I did it I blew a fuse putting the paperclip into the wrong holes 😅

So I was able to program a replacement remote but then my backup remote quit working. It seems I am able to only program one remote at a time. Is there any way that I can program two remotes? I can only program one at present. If I reprogram my original remote the new replacement remote I have stops working and vice versa.

Program all remotes one after the other before removing ground wire. Just press the remote buttons, not the whole sequence.
