I think you misunderstood the song. He wasn't talking about the political landscape, he was having an existential crisis over the idea that his comedy is not beneficial to society in any way. Part one of his hour and a half long existential crisis known as Inside, which you really just have to watch in order and in its entirety.
He's not complaining about political correctness and the state of comedy in that, he is defending those people and saying "yeah, I shouldn't be joking about this, its not beneficial to society in the slightest, but its all I know how to do." His work is of course beneficial and it betters many of our lives but that's where he's coming from.
Ah, glad I saw someone comment this! Yes, the song is a critique of self important comedians and white-saviors, and about how comedy feels out of place in a shitty time like the present.
Bo Burnham definitely isn't the type to be against "woke" agenda or whatever; he's talked extensively about how embarrassed he is of his older, intentionally offensive work

Its a repeat theme in a lot of his songs. Comedy is dead jumps in to it as well. Its a self reflection on his meaning of life. Is what he is doing actually worth doing in his own mind? Is he making a difference can he do more etc etc. Classic existential self reflection.

Please consider watching the songs from Inside all the way through in order, especially now that you've watched the first song from it! Inside is so, so good and is easily Bo's masterpiece. But the whole context of Inside is more important than the music alone honestly
Yes! I saw someone recommending Goodbye next, but that needs so much more context from the rest of the special for it to hit right. Definitely go in order.

Beyond questioning whether it's "okay to be joking", I like how this song is also mocking self-important comedians who constantly act like their work is some super-deep service to society. Like, yes, great comedy absolutely CAN be deep and valuable to society, but that's for the audience to decide, not the comic themselves.
I really don't see a lot of comedian, at least in France, who do it for praying their own way of thinking. That's the complete opposite for me, and it's actually enjoyable when we found comedian like Bo, where you need to dig for find different layer of meaning. (sorry for my approximative english)

One of those parts about this special, he is adding them laughs AND the "audience perspectives," even if there's no audience. It's weird and great. As is usual with Bo.
One reason I love Bo is he is so self aware. You have to ride a very fine line in comedy not to be tone deaf about significant issues in society. Bo's mix of self awareness and satire is everything.

Definitely gotta watch all of Inside. It's so fucking good and really gives a sense of how Bo was dealing with the pandemic, as we all were, and the journey of his writing and producing this special.

I think this song is kind of questioning the importance of Comedy. People talk about Comedy ( and art in general ) like it's this big world changing thing, and I feel like in this song Bo is really calling that into question. When the world is full of chaos and everything seems so bad what is Comedy actually going to do? Will it even make a difference at all? I really love the introspective takes he has on things.

I don't know if you've checked "Goodbye" yet. It's the last song of the special and really brings all of the songs together. He comes back to "Comedy" in a cool way.
so... I think you missed the mark on this one and misinterpreted the themes and nuances of the song. The only point you addressed at the end of the song is cancel culture, and fair enough if that's what you took away from it but I don't think that cancel culture is referenced overtly or even subtly in this song. You didn't mention it, but the overarching and most obvious theme is Bo's struggle with doing what he loves (comedy) and reconciling that with his own doubts about how much telling jokes can help when the world is in such a state - and he even pokes fun at this 'making a literal difference, metaphorically'. The men in white cloaks and the house burning are not to do with riots - those men in white cloaks are representative of real pervasive issues in society (racism/sexism/xenophobia) and how someone dealing with these very real issues will need a lot more than a joke to help navigate them. Similarly, in a time when so many of us are in very real danger whether through exposure to war or disease, a joke seems so insignificant to the safety that we need.
This struggle between wanting to express himself while acknowledging the relative insignificance of it all is touched upon throughout the special. If what you took away from it was 'You can't tell any jokes anymore because the world is too PC' then fair enough but there are definitely more obvious themes at play here that deserve acknowledging.

Check out his white boards during this song. They are very well thought out. I think it's what makes his content so great. Punching up instead of down. I absolutely love his integration of satire, real problems, and making the point with comedy.
I normally don't comment much, but I really like your channel and am big Bo Burnham fan. As somebody who has struggled with anxiety and depression for a long, long time I really respect Bo and you for being open about it. I hid it for a long time, tried to laugh and joke my way through it and it ended up costing me a ton, especially relationships with people I truly loved. Now I try to be open about it, and I write poetry/lyrics sometimes (poorly) but it's comforting to see an artist like Bo and youtubers like you being real about it. Anyway, love all your breakdowns and catching wordplay like I do. Thanks for your time man.

Absolutely loving the Bo videos! This is actually the first song that made me fall in love with his work because Inside was the first thing I saw from him. I love goofy humor but also serious introspection and pretty melodies, so this song ticked all my boxes! 😄 I agree you should keep going through Inside in order. So Facetime with My Mom would be next.

This isn't about your incorrect idea of cancel culture and pc. He's just saying that the current state of the world doesn't make a good setting to be able to tell jokes. So many things going on. He even satirizes the ignorance of white people and how their well meaning actions end up not being the help they believe themselves to be.
Yeah, I thought this was a click-bait title at first but turns out he just had a completely wrong take on the song. The song is so much deeper than cancel culture. I mean, hell, these could be a lot of the same thoughts that Bo has had while considering to do this multi-episode special. It seems very introspective and self-aware to me, while also being satirized for comedic effect.

Fun fact, the “duck walk” is a joke Bo has with himself because he’s like 6’5-6’6 which is too damn tall to fit comfortably in frame with most stuff like the whiteboard in the shot… so a long time ago he joked about how he would just squat and waddle around to feel normal. Lmao
If you google photos with fans from when he used to tour you’ll see a bunch of him doing the duck squat to fit into the picture with “normal” sized people.
So that little joke was mostly just for himself.

Its extremely short, but its a great listen. Just before his Kanye rant in "Make Happy" Bo dropped some knowledge called "The Me Generation" All the clips I see on youtube are about 1:17 long and I feel like its better from the actual special because there is more to it than that, but whether you watch the whole special or not, its still a good listen.

He was singing about his internal struggle with wanting to make comedy but also recognising that there are actual problems and the world at the time had gone to shit, and that he might not be the best person to talk about it all. And whether comedy is actually that helpful in times like that.
Also Bo has spoken before about people reading too much into his songs, and the idea of treating comedians as some kind of 'modern day philosophers' being really harmful.
His parts about being 'a special kinda white guy' etc. are him being self aware about how easily he comes off as virtue signally/insincere, and criticising people who do so uncritically.

Have you ever heard of the Snotty Nosed Rez Kids? They are an indigenous group out of western "Canada" who make truly amazing music. I reccomend Creator Made an Animal as your first taste of their truly amazing music.

I don’t see people being mean, just pointing out that the song isn’t about cancel culture, because it isn’t. It isn’t praise but it’s not hate. Construct criticism and/or correcting misconceptions isn’t hate. But, that’s what I think you might mean since it’s the only non-overly positive stuff here.

Bo is entertaining, but I find this line of thinking extremely concerning, as if it is not the content of our thoughts and words that hold truth, but the simple fact of skin or sexual organs that classify ideas worth listening to.
