  • The most important stage of the Russian autumn economic work was harvesting grain and collecting the rest of the harvest. Autumn rituals were associated with a magical understanding of this process: the cornfield was imagined to be pregnant, and harvesting was represented as childbirth. In their work, the Siberians constantly turned to both pagan female natural forces and saints, asking them to successfully preserve the fruits of this year and the same harvest for the next year.
Galina Vladislavovna, Candidate of Historical Sciences, senior researcher at the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Novosibirsk, tells. The video was prepared as part of the project “Important Things: Traditions and Life of Russian Migrants in Siberia,” implemented with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives in 2023-2024.
