Thank you so much for making this video. I have a 2008 Acadia. I started having water on the passenger side floor after a rain. A couple of times, my Acadia would not start because, as I found out later, the water got into the battery compartment.I went to several places to tr to get it fixed. I was quoted prices from $600 to $1400. I was hoping for a better way. I researched and came across your video. I took it to a couple places and told them about your video. They told me they would have to diagnose the problem and that it would still cost between $400 and $600. One shop said he would try it. It took him 30 minutes to do both sides. He charged me such a small fee that I gave him 4 times as much because I was so grateful to him. Thank you so much. Your video saved the day!
Brad if i could have brought it to you I would have. I really do appreciate your video. Yay UA-cam. One of the places I took it to was a GM dealership service department. They actually tried to convince me that they would have to replace the rubber seals around the doors and some other crazy stuff. I knew they were trying to take advantage of me. I am so glad I found your video. Thank you again.
I love this post because I literally had the same issue. Came out one morning after a storm and the battery compartment was literally filled to the brim with water. definitely cannot wait to try this video out first chance I get because the quoted $600 fix by gmc plus a new battery is completely ridiculous.
You guys with this leak all realize that by the time you see the leak your vehicle is heavily damaged? Don't believe me? Pull up the passenger carpet and squeeze the foam lining under the carpet. What also happens is the body harness that runs along both rocker panels and across the vehicle just in front of the front seats will rot out at the in line splices the factory uses. You will be chasing electrical gremlins for as long as you own the rig unless the whole front interior is pulled out, carpet either replaced or completely dried, all in line splices in the harness opened up and inspected or repaired. I have just been through this with an Acadia that had "Service SRS" message on the DIC. It all starts with something not working electrically and just snow balls from there.
Gratzkul me too!!! Mine has been leaking and I've tried everything! I bought some clear silicone and I was going outside to seal up my sunroof right now, they told me that was the last option other than taking it to the dealership and it being 300 or more to fix I'm so glad I looked at this video first to at least try that out. My traction control won't go off a long with service stabletrack, and many other alarms.Only getting 12 mpgmy battery has been replaced 3 times in 2 years my car won't shut off with the key out until it slowly dies it's a mess!! This car has been by far the worst purchase I've ever made it has been nothing but problems but this may have just saved me from going completely crazy and setting it afire myself!!! Thank you so much for this video! :) fingers crossed that it works! One thing I have found out when my motor light comes on and I'm sure many others have this problem the throttle body simply needs to be cleaned and the car will run so much better and that alarm will disapear.
Add some flex seal or silicone caulking around the end where the hose attaches to the nipple, that will keep the water in the tube instead of leaking into your car when it gets clogged. Get a piece of mesh like used for window screens. Cut a small piece and place it over the drain port opening in the sunroof area. This will keep the large debris out of the tube just remember to clean that drain tray when you wash your car. A small piece of foil with with lots of pin holes works too. The main source of the problem is the elbow joint, dirty water pools up inside against that right angle and when that flow stops it leaves behind buildup that drys and clogs the end of the nipple.
Thanks for taking the time to make the video. My left and right drainage tubes were clogged. Big rains caused the sun roof "pan" to overflow, leak out of various places in the ceiling, and finally settle in a nice pool on the mats. Looks like issue is now solved!
For those reading in 2018, there are also rear drain holes in the sun roof, and you may have to locate them under the rear of the vehicle behind rear wheel. Use Weed Wacker trimmer plastic rod to go up from the bottom. On my 2013 Acadia and others, water can enter at the A pillar (windshield) and get into a big fuse box along the passenger side up beside the glove compartment and cause lots of damage and problems. I am going to wrap that in plastic somehow and also drill a hole in the bottom of the heater fan motor housing that is just beneath the glove box. Rounded bowl. 3/8" hole. Keeps Heater motor from being ruined.
Thanks for making this video! We had the same problem on our car and, thanks to you, were able to fix it without any problems. Now we'll be able to check the tubes every few months to prevent major water damage to the vehicle. Thanks again!!
Thank you so much, great video. i just applied and finished for my Acadia 2008, it was clogged totally. but i have problem that my sun roof stuck, and cant open it , so i cleaned the pipes using air pressure..
Great video. Thanks for the help. For the next time, make sure to disconnect the battery first, as these tubes run right alongside the airbags and there's a possibility of accidental deployment.
+AtlSavage770 Savage possibly. You don't want to have too much pressure though or you might blow the elbow connection apart at the firewall. It's worth a try but understand that if you put too much pressure on it and it blows apart, you'll definitely have to pull the panels off and repair it.
Not quite the same problem I was having but this was still very helpful. My problem was the water would come rushing down the center of the windshield behind the dash. The result of that reared its ugly head last week when the engine kept running after the switch was cut off. It's been rainy here lately and my wife wanted me to just seal it which would have just created more problems. The ignition is fine now
After owning my 2008 GMC Acadia since new, I'm going to give this a try! I have had it to the GM dealership multiple times, only to be given a hefty bill and a river in my vehicle after the next rainstorm. SMH.
To save future reoccurrence of this problem a modification of the elbow is described in a GM service bulletin. When you look inside the elbow, you can see it in the video, there is what looks like a Philips head screw slot. It is a thin flexible valve that water will push open but will stop much low pressure airflow. It collects debris that will eventually harden to completely block water flow. It is a bit difficult to cut this thin rubber valve out. I tried a drill bit but it didn't work so I used an xacto knife and needle nose pliers to cut it out. Cleaning your drain pan area will also help prevent a blockage of these elbows. My sunroof track area had a lot of white grease that I cleaned out. I think the grease contributed to the elbow clog. I'm guessing that a new elbow was installed in newer models very quietly by GM. This small rubber valve has been the cause of a loss of millions of dollars to GM and its customers. I think it took GM quite awhile to figure this one out.
you know what worked for me and was way easier? take an air hose and blower attachment and blow air in the little holes up in the sunroof spot. Presto cleans it right out no more leaking and water drains right out.
Michael Young I tried that first off. I must have had too much debris in mine for that to work. But yes- definitely a great idea for the ones less plugged!
Michael Young I bought an '08 back in January of this year (2017) and the previous owner had the same problem, and they blew it out and they said it went away. I realized a couple weeks ago it was leaking out of the airbag slot on the side trim, just on the driver's side. Might try getting it blown out again, because I can hear it sloshing up in the sunroof when it rains.
Thanks! Great vid. Do you have or can you provide a link to how to fix a rear sunroof issue? I have a 2008 Enclave which is leaking in the back as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
2011 gmc terrain drainage hose came loose from the sunroof drain hole at the top. Solved my leaking problem in side the truck. Sucks that i dropped the end piece behind the dash
Who loves yaà?ya? Great dyi video .. thanks so much! Seems like everything has been going wrong around the house and with both cars great fix it video! This really helps
seems to me after watching some other videos that one of the culprits, besides being a GM ;), is that elbow that connects to the firewall, wondered if you removed that, extended the hose a bit, slid just the hose into the firewall and siliconed in place if it would help, that way its a straight shot out. If you lengthen the hose maybe use a slightly bigger diameter to slide over the original so there would be no chance of stoppage inside the tube. Just thinkin...................
tom Smith Yeah I’m not sure why they put an elbow there. I’m sure some brainiac somewhere justified it. I’d say you’re on to something as long as the hose really stayed in place and didn’t fall out and begin leaking all over inside.
@@BradSmith777 I assume they needed the grommet to seal the gap in the hole and ensure the hose didn't rub against metal and get cut. I assume they put the valve in there to try and prevent anything from getting into the hose from the engine area. (e.g. to prevent external blockages) Unfortunately, it looks like they out engineered themselves on this one.....
The only thing he missed was that those 90 degree rubber grommets have a type of 4 tapered fingers one way valve molded into them. If you look down into the end where the hose attaches, it looks like a plus sign or phillips head screw. These fingers require a certain amount of water column pressure to open them and drain the collection channel. consequently, any trash entering the drain tube drifts down to this valve and clogs it up. Good design in theory, bad design in the real world. I took a dremel tool with a small bit and cut / ground the fingers out of the grommet, no more problems.
aschles07 I ended up trading for another car since then, so it's hard to say. Good news is, the car was 7 years old when I did it, so hopefully not for at least a few years!
I did this about a month ago. The driver side elbow was super clogged and the passenger drain tube wasn’t even going out the firewall, it was just draining straight down into my fuze box. I figured I might as well clean it instead of sealing it up with flex tape like a real redneck 😂 after having to replace my ignition switch for the second time, I decided to tackle the job of cleaning the drain tubes. I was so excited for it to rain and for my car to finally stay dry. Boy, was I wrong. I got in to run to Taco Bell one rainy day and it was a whole ass tsunami coming out of both driver and passenger sides. I was so upset. I really thought I had fixed the problem for good. Now this is the second huge rainstorm that we’ve had since I did that and I made the mistake of not parking the car in the garage before it started. Once again, it’s pouring inside of the car. I give up. I have no idea where this water is coming from now. Could the elbows ALREADY be clogged again after just a month? Or is there another drain hole somewhere that I need to clean out? This car has been nothing but problems and 50% of them are due to it literally raining inside of the car. I hate that I can’t go anywhere in The rain and I can’t leave my car parked in the driveway during the rain, I can’t go through a Car wash either. It’s so frustrating. I love what this fully loaded vehicle has to offer, especially being a mom of three but these manufacturer defects are starting to break the bank. When I first got it, after a heavy rain, my whole battery compartment was full to the brim with rain water, I had to drill a hole in the bottom of the battery compartment. What kind of dumb ass designers worked on this vehicle? I have some things I’d like to say to them. Guess I’m just going to seal the sunroof and moon roof shut. That is the only time that this car ever stayed dry inside during a rain. I guess not being able to open the sunroof (one of my favorite features) is better than my entire electrical system shorting out. Guess ya can’t have it all.
Have you checked out the top elbows at the sunroof to see that they’re properly attached? I would also consider taking the dash off like you did to do the clean out at first and the pour some water in the trough and see where the water goes/comes out at.
Any chance that water damaged your amp? I have a 2009 Saturn Outlook XR and my speakers have no sound out of them from the radio, turn signals, alarms....nothing....but the radio still illuminates. I just got my wife a 2008 acadia slt2 about 3 weeks ago. we do not get much rain here where we live but when it does rain, we notice water leaking in the vehicle on the front passenger side at the top of the A-pillar causing water to run down the a-pillar and the headliner gets wet. will this be a fix to my issue also or is there something else going on? my wife says she hears a "sloshing" sound while driving in the rain... Big thanks for anyone who can provide insight on my issue.
Gil Graue sounds like this is exactly what the problem is. My suggestion to you is that you open the sunroof and see if there is any standing water in the trough. If so, then that’s your issue. Hello, thanks for the video, I just want to know if that worked for you, I have the same problem with a 2007 Acadia and I'm looking how to fix it! Any advice!!
44lilron I'm not a mechanic, but I would assume you are dealing with the same thing, it's just finding it's way out a different way than mine did. I would be willing to bet that it's plugged up in the top drain hole instead of down where mine was. Let me know what you find out! Good Luck!
+Brad Smith I fixed the issue, O'Reilly's sells a clear window strip sealer, I put it all around the panoramic sunroof and Bam! no more water. we been getting some serious rain here in Texas but not a drop in my car...
+44lilron with as much rain as you're getting down there, you're lucky it's not coming in through from the bottom up! lol When it dries up, check that top drain hole and see if there is something plugging it. Might be an easy fix. Stay dry and safe
Those drain plugs have been an issue on alot of GMC crossovers. I have a 2008 GMC Acadia that same thing would happen and it would soak the carpet from the AC system and headliner from the rain and snow from sunroof drains all the time. Even after cleaning or flushing them out they would clog back up quick so I finally cut out the inner thin plastic relief valves from inside all the plugs in the vehicle from the pillars to the floor board plugs. The valves in the plug look like mini heart valves so I took a drill bit by hand and cut it out so now the water and dirt go straight passed no resistance from that valve and I haven't had that issue at all after that. Those plugs clog up easy because the relief valves block the debris like a filter and back up the water. Really dumb design by GM
I hate this SUV, is just problem after problem, we have to clean that filters very often or whe have the Niágara falls inside the car and smells horrible because the humidity
Karen Mora have you ever considered the idea of cutting out the rubber “x” that everything gets plugged at? I’ve never tried that, but it would make the most sense to me as a next step.
Love the video and i will be attempting cleaning of mine too but i have a qestion before i do , i just came from carwash and i went to vacum the car after i was done i got in to go home and service airbag message poped up on dash along with the airbag light would clogged drain cause water to go somewhere where it would mess up the airbag module or is this unrelated
from my understanding it could absolutely have something to do with it. The water will build up in the hose and will leak out at the firewall, which, in turn could possibly find itself getting into the electronics.

I'm curios, did you consider using a small air hose to clear the blockage?
Harold Robinson I did try that. Mine must have been too plugged up.
Could you please tell me more about your heads-up display?
Harold Robinson could you be more specific about your question please? What do you need to know about the heads up display?
Hello, thanks for the video, I just want to know if that worked for you, I have the same problem with a 2007 Acadia and I'm looking how to fix it! Any advice!!
Hey Jonathan thanks for the question. Yes it absolutely worked for me and never have had any problems since.
mine leaks from the back, out the back up sensor and over head lights. any idea what the issue might be?
You can thank gm for the rear leak you have a hole next to the rear roof that rusts out over time I was told it was A designed flaw
Ronnie Bryant can silicon seal? I'm having this issue. Water coming from rear lights thanks
I saw a guy blow both of them clean with compressed air from the open sunroof area water exit holes.
Is it still leak free? Or are you still having issues? Also did you have issues with the rear sunroof?
Justin H I traded it off. It will eventually get plugged again because of the poor design. It didn’t have a rear sunroof.
I am getting water in the back now it's coming out of the seat belt holes in the 3rd row seating and as of today my car will no longer start
