Such a mysterious, dark key. Fabulous sonority and fabulous playing. There is so much in this music, each movement is an absolute gem. Thank you so much.
Masterful performance this! The violin has a very unique voice that would make it very difficult to play for most violinists. It sometimes sounds even muted, yet in the second section, it enlivens. So, it must be the skill of the violinist that this violin appreciates and is "willing" to cooperate in the production.
To listen to the music of Bach is always delightful and the performance of Sato and Ares is absolutely amazing, fantastic! Many thanks, "Netherlands Bach Society", for the post.
So beautiful combination. Mr. Sato, you play always far beyond my expectation. Beautiful long tones with variey of colors. Thank you so much. It soothes my soul.
Enchanted interpretation and performance, right from the start. Very good bond between the harpsichordist and the violinist. Bravi! Thanks NBS for this magical upload.
As a young man nearly 60 years ago, I first became hooked on Bach through a double LP of Yehudi Menuhin and George Malcolm playing the Violin and harpsichord sonatas, which I listened to again and again - until the records started to wear out! I always re-acted strongly to the 1st movement of this sonata (no. 5) and came to realise just how well Bach understood human emotions and how uncannily he could express them. This movement is marked as "Lamento" in some manuscripts, and indeed the violin does the lamenting while the harpsichord provides empathy and consolation. Menuhin's lament reaches an almost unbearable peak about 5 minutes in, but then the stolid suppport of Malcolm's playing (he does not attempt to make the harpsichord sound pretty) gradually calms the violin down - reaching a lovely togetherness at the end of the movement. I have therefore looked forward to the NBS recordings of these Sonatas with anticipation - and some trepidation. Sato and Ares make an excellent interpretation, and I have listened with huge pleasure. If I say that I think they don't quite reach the depths which Menuhin and Malcolm plunged, this is in no way a criticism, and may be coloured by my youthful memories. ua-cam.com/video/d6m6-ScSjms/v-deo.html
Those 2 recordings are completely incomparable due to the complete shift in interpretation paradigms. You cannot achieve the same level of (melo)-dramatization through baroque interpretation as you can through romantic interpretation - at least on long held notes. Beyond the benefit of "historical accuracy", baroque technique makes up for it generally through more refined and engaging articulation. However I think this piece just doesn't benefit from it as much as some others might.
Fantastic bow control! It's more difficult than than it would appear to get an even sound over the entire length of the bow on long sustained notes such as the ones in the first movement.
I'm more privileged than Bach! I can listen to Bach in utube or in other electronic devices. Bach didn't have the opportunity to listen to any of his recordings!!
Great note arcs, concave. Give the sound an assertive start then let it dissipates. In contrast, common violin play uses convex arcs; start the sound and then push it louder.
I’ve watched this several times now, and compared a few other versions. In this one, at the start the violin seems to be full of painful emotional intensity, while the harpsichord seems to express “keep calm and carry on”, but they seem to come together as the piece develops. I wonder if that is what Bach actually intended? This unique contrast must, to a large extent, come from the players, but I wonder if the Baroque temperament has something to do with it? I have checked back with *Van Doeselaar on the Silbermann organ in Freiberg* starting at 3 min 16s, and he said that Baroque audiences expected this sort of harmonic tension. I find the harpsichord just a little soft: I wonder how it would sound on a fortepiano?
@@stephenlee1756 You’re exactly right, I’ve studied each of the periods of music and my favorite is definitely Baroque because I prefer the baroque style
I disagree with the description that the second movement of this sonata belongs to the older trio sonata style. The right hand of the harpsichordist wasn’t meant for a second violin the same way the left hand wasn’t written for basso continuo.
Isn't there yet the sonata no. 4 BWV 1017 for violin and harpsichord on UA-cam? Or did I overlook it? For sure I am looking forward to another wonderful performance!
Excellent bow control! The camera work isn’t as bad as usual, but I still wish you’d just set the camera and stop dancing between view angles. It’s very distracting and unnecessary. Set the camera and play
Yes, the harpsichord is unpleasantly harsh and loud in this recording. I think it's a recording issue, like microphone placement or mixing. Somebody needs to listen to this again and rebalance the audio, because most of the All of Bach recordings are spectacular in comparison.
0:06 Largo
7:23 Allegro
12:27 Adagio
15:57 Vivace
Two men in a room with Bach weave absolute magic. Transcendent!
What a beautiful sound Sound the violin of Sato San makes.
What a pleasure ! Finally two musicians who have a serious dialogue while maintaining their individuality. Many thanks !
And three centuries later they are still more alive than ever, a music of sublime beauty, limitless voluptuousness, wonder and delight for the soul.
voluptuousness?????🤣
I love how smoothly the violin enters the melody. Always a delight to listen to.
Sato finds the very Bach's soul for every Unser Vaters piece. Congratulations!!!

One of my favorites! Wonderfully played! Really a fan of the stark contrasting tonal qualities of the harpsichord and the violin. So beautiful
Bravo Bach! A real jewel of a sonata.

Enjoying the minimalist vibrato!
I agree. It changes the whole piece. So much more calmer.

pure beauty and refined expressions. For sure a reference recording!!!

I learned the largo part a while back, by far my favorite piece to play for people, thinking of re learning it again with correct bowing lol
Than you both for this wonderful afternoon tranquility you have given ❤

In jeder Form wunderbar und heilsam.

I loved the Adagio! Also, I stan Mr. Sato playing on jeans 😅

Dat hebben jullie heel mooi gespeeld! dank!
Sublime.

Soberbio.
Superb
Magnifique 😶
The quotes from the a minor 2 part invention. Very clever doctor Bach.
Piękne. Pozdrawiam + z Polski.
Ohbmy, so many quotes.😊
Pretty good!
One melody in the allegro reminds me of one piece of the Musical Inventions for clave

This violin is made by Cornelius Kleynman (ca. 1684)
