I like the magnet trick and if it was me I would replace the tappets as much play as that one has I would be afraid of a failure and destroying the engine
You are 100% correct!!! On big twins from about 1973 on, they used 1/4-20 and prior to that, they used 1/4-24. I was using a 5/16 socket and had that on my brain. Great catch!!!! Thanks for the comment!!
