This drum is one of the most difficult Iranian musical instruments to play. His play was wonderful. His drum was singing the same as the actual singer who had song the song. He is a genius musical player! Amazing!
Do you know the name of this snapping finger technique ? I saw it also used on bendir or darbouka, and yet haven't find a good explanation of it anywhere
@@roelwalstra Let’s say “unpitched” percussion instrument for the smart a’s out there. Otherwise by a broad definition even the piano is a percussion instrument so we need not go as far as Marimba.
Hi. I am Hossein Heydari, Tonbak teacher, be with me with this original and old instrument. Tonbak step by step training from zero to one hundred. I love you
Woow... This was something new,for me.. You know,if you listen to this part with a headsett then you will hear that he actually plays the melody of this part (Balal Balal).. That¨s impressive actually =) Good job !
Tombak player here. You will usually see the tombak played in a duet or along with other Iranian instruments. The tombak sets the beat (or “zarb” as we call it in Farsi) wether it’s 2/4, 4/4, 6/8 or any other. If you look at any traditional iranian play you can see that the tombak is there, alongside with maybe a daf (another percussion instrument) and a few string instruments alongside with a vocalist (I suggest you look up Morghe Sahar by Mohammad Reza Shajarian for a good example). So to answer your question, this isn’t a traditional play. This an interpretation of the bakhtiari song Balal Balal. But Mortazavi is the greatest tombak player in my mind. He’s gotten more creative with this instrument than I thought was possible

There are many more percussion instruments that can be used melodically!

@@81wwwolf The drum in this video is certainly being played as a pitched instrument. Maybe not 12 tones like other instruments but pitched nonetheless
I'm speechless!! Knocked out by this~

Can someone from Iran please tell me if this is traditional music or if it's a contemporary virtuoso interpretation? Either way, this is fascinating.
