i have concerns too, but it's easy enough to get out of if it doesn't work. habs will have all three retention slots next year. laine at 8.7x2 came as a negative asset to montreal, because harris is solid but not worth a top 40 pick. laine at 4.35x1 might actually interest some teams, if we need to move him. honestly, 30-35 goals, 60 points, effort, enough defensive buy-in to not embarrass himself, and not causing any drama, and i'll be happy.

Last year we were 1st in the league for defeats by 1 goal.. Adding Laine and giving some space to Mailloux/Hutson(2 good offensive defensemen) is a really good move. If Laine can be healthy and motivated to play under that spotlight we're making a huuuuuge step forward lol

Laine kind of reminds me of Kovalev. A guy with all the talent in the world, but the effort isn't always there and things don't always come together. You know that if he can get it together for a full season, he can be a 40-50 goal scorer with the right line mates, but he's wildly inconsistent and if he's not playing with the right guys, he can disappear. So much of hockey is between the ears, and I know that as a former competitive swimmer with an abusive parent. I don't know Patrik's situation and it's really none of my business, but if he's been dealing with some stuff, it can be tough to reach your potential. Theo Fleury dealt with his issues by drinking like a fish, and while that can work for some people for a short time (I mean, there's a reason people abuse substances), ultimately it can make things a lot worse when the inevitable crash comes. George Carlin put it best when he said that when it comes to substances, you start off with all pleasure and very little paid, but as you continue to use and up your intake, the pleasure part decreases and the price you pay increases, until there's a severe imbalance and you have to do something. I'm not saying Laine is an addict or anything like that, but mental health is not a joke, it's not something you can just "suck up." It's a process. You have to be ready to get help and you have to have the right support network to make sure you get the right kind of help. No judgment. Hopefully he finds his game in Montreal because when that team is doing well, that fanbase is rockin'.
Analyst on the right not understanding the Laine move, probably plays checkers vs chess. This is abslolutely no gamble at all for MTL, worst case, they pay 2 years of Laine and get a 2nd round pick out of Harris. And Harris was going to get passed in MTL by the depth in defense anyway. Some people don't always quite grasp what St-Louis does to a player.
If 19 years old Laine can score 40+, the 26-27 years old version can too and Marty knows that very well.
He just cracks the shell the player has been building and surrounding himself with the whole time he was in dark places. He finds the man behind the shell. He is wise, so he makes people see their path. He's putting himself in your place and helps you find your way out because he can communicate it very well on his journey out of your shoes.
Potentially a perfect situation for Laine and Montréal fans. No expectations due to his personal situation and the team's overall "rebuild."

Pretty nice young top 9 we have coming up. We probably will swap Beck with Hage eventually but thats very solid. Along with fantastic defense. And goaltending. You start to realize how dangerous this team can be when all Their young guys come to the NHL.

i have concerns too, but it's easy enough to get out of if it doesn't work. habs will have all three retention slots next year. laine at 8.7x2 came as a negative asset to montreal, because harris is solid but not worth a top 40 pick. laine at 4.35x1 might actually interest some teams, if we need to move him.

The Habs traded Jordan Harris (a third round pick) for a 2nd round pick in 2026. Pretty good deal since they needed to unload a defenceman. Oh yeah, Columbus threw in Laine’s contract that only lasts 2 seasons and I believe his possible upside far exceeds the potential negatives!

Totally pumped, a guy who cleaned himself up, I would rather have him on this side of it. For what was traded, even if it's a stop gap, this is a good deal that a D piece needed to be moved. This grows the core and we'll probably see picks move a couple of immoveable players; Gallagher and Anderson.

Laine has not reached his peak yet. It's worth the risk of a guy who can impact your team a lot if he's on fire. He's been through a lot and I'm sure he's ready to prove everyone wrong but mostly prove to himself he can do it.
Same type of trade as the Kovalev one and Kovy ended up having his best seasons and time in montreal. I'm not wearing any Pink Glasses at the moment when I predict the same to Laine cause they both need to be the spotlight to thrive. The guy has had 12 pts in the playoff at 19. I wouldn’t use what the Leafs did with their core as model for the Habs. The lazy guy they got rid of ended up winning multiple cups and became the NHL Ironman, while the young players they were worried about him influencing have won one playoff round.

Laine kind of reminds me of Kovalev. A guy with all the talent in the world, but the effort isn't always there and things don't always come together. You know that if he can get it together for a full season, he can be a 40-50 goal scorer with the right line mates, but he's wildly inconsistent and if he's not playing with the right guys, he can disappear. So much of hockey is between the ears, and I know that as a former competitive swimmer with an abusive parent. I don't know Patrik's situation and it's really none of my business, but if he's been dealing with some stuff, it can be tough to reach your potential. Theo Fleury dealt with his issues by drinking like a fish, and while that can work for some people for a short time (I mean, there's a reason people abuse substances), ultimately it can make things a lot worse when the inevitable crash comes. George Carlin put it best when he said that when it comes to substances, you start off with all pleasure and very little paid, but as you continue to use and up your intake, the pleasure part decreases and the price you pay increases, until there's a severe imbalance and you have to do something. I'm not saying Laine is an addict or anything like that, but mental health is not a joke, it's not something you can just "suck up." It's a process. You have to be ready to get help and you have to have the right support network to make sure you get the right kind of help. No judgment. Hopefully he finds his game in Montreal because when that team is doing well, that fanbase is rockin'.

Analyst on the right not understanding the Laine move, probably plays checkers vs chess. This is abslolutely no gamble at all for MTL, worst case, they pay 2 years of Laine and get a 2nd round pick out of Harris. And Harris was going to get passed in MTL by the depth in defense anyway. So MTL would have probably lost Harris for nothing, instead, they get a 2nd round pick, plus Patrik Laine. Worst case scenario is still a good deal, now if Laine can get back to 40 goal form, its a huge win. Plus they can still trust to re-sign him after two years to a roster fitting wage. He just turned 26, Suzuki, turned 25 this spring. So he’s right in the mix age wise.

Let's see ... we got a 2nd round pick (from a low ranking team) for a 3rd round pick defenseman that was surplus as we have many other LHD in the lineup before him. He probably wasn't going to make the team and we might have lost him for nothing on waivers.
If Laine works out then we'll have gotten a top 6 player for nothing ... if he doesn't then we just won't resign him in 2 years.
