I was about eight at the time and growing up in york. I remember every house in Yorkshire got written to and sent a copy of the letter. It was quite scary but even then I remember thinking it odd the killer would write to the police. It’s amazing they couldn’t discard the letter and tape and got taken in so easily.

If the lead investigator wasn't so damn sure that Wearside Jack was the ripper then Sutcliffe would have been caught much much sooner

The police did not find this killer, he practically handed himself in with a sign on his back saying 'I'm the ripper' before they 'caught' him. This is possibly the biggest police bungle in recorded history.

I know what you mean, the fact that a murder victim is referred to as "a prostitute" but someone on the other side of the tracks is called "a loving innocent Mother of 2" - or whatever - it stinks of bias. If I got killed, I'd be called a '30yr old man', simple as, unless I was a junkie of course then I'd just be a 'junkie' and no-one would care.

Poor old Dick & George couldn't catch a cold. What an utter embarrassment for British policing. Cannot undo it. I suppose at least Dick is happy to do interviews. What a total balls up. They belong in small country town solving petty crime cases like someone stealing a load of bread from the corner store. It is just astonishing to think of how much they got wrong and the lives that were lost due to their utter incompetence. So bloody sad.

Barossa Boy Humble was a drunken vulnerable man when Patrick Lavelle drew the West Yorkshire police attention to him because he had stabbed and almost killed his brother Harry in a drunken frenzied row.
Lavelle who worked on the Echo and edited it for a time had made it his life's work to find the so called Wearside Jack and had fingered dozens of other men over the years to the W Y police.
Some questions have to be asked.
Why did Humble's family, friends and associates not identify his voice in 1979/80 when every Geordie was a Ripper suspect? Also bearing in mind that he denied the allegations vehemently for some time after arrest, what effect did the attempted murder of his brother Harry have on his decision to cooperate with the police?
If the police were so certain Humble was the author of the letters and tape, why do a deal with this man who caused murders?
Why not prove it to a jury in a public court with handwriting experts and voice experts?
Why were the police 100 per cent certain in 1979/80 that the letter writer was in fact the Ripper whose rare B blood group was found on some victims and it matched the saliva on the envelope and stamp. But finally why did the Lancashire police not investigate Humble in connection with the Preston unsolved murder of Joan Harrison whose murder was linked to the Ripper murders by the letter writer?

UP TO 8 NOW ,YOU SAY 7 ,BUT REMEMBER PRESTON 75. This letter was post marked 8 march 1978. Shouldn't that 9 and not 8? 24 Jan 1978 was the night that 21 year old Yvonne Pearson was killed. So what's this got to do with Wearside Jack? 26 March 1978 was the day when the body of Yvonne Pearson was found. The letter was sent 22 days after she was killed. Why did he not mention it? Why did he not boast about her body not being found? Why did he not mock the police about the latest victim? Clearly
