The Fuji 16mm 1.4 - my favorite lens. Also has an incredibly great focal distance, of about 5.5 cm or something crazy. It costs more than the X-T20 itself, but it's incredible for landscape and other wide angle shots.
I shoot with film but I’ve been thinking about switching to digital, and wow... this channel has completely convinced me to get this camera with this lens!!
Omar, to fix the lens EXIF go to the Shooting Settings (the little camera icon) and to Mount Adapter Settings. Go down to "Lens 5" and edit it to reflect 12mm. Now the EXIF data will say 12mm and I have heard that it will be able to do the math for exposure a little better if it knows the field of view of the lens. If you shoot JPEGs I would recommend while you are there to also do the Distortion Control and fix the barrel and pincushion distortion for the JPEGs. Then do the Color Shading Correction and using a grey piece of paper and use the selector to adjust shading until there is no visible difference in color between the corner and the center of the image. Then adjust the darkness of the vignette with the Peripheral Illumination Correction setting (a plus value makes corners brighter). None of this really matters if you are shooting RAW, but it is nice to have it say 12mm in Lightroom so that you can sort by lens and find all the pictures you took with this lens.
Hi there, I own samyang 12mm and xt10, somehow "Distortion Control Color" "Shading Correction" and "vignette" options are grey in my XT10 menu and I cannot reach them, any ideas?
Been watching your videos for a while and they are great! Really like your style - not too technical, real user experience, light hearted, goofy - keep it up!
I've never gone wider than 24mm in 20 years of photography. You definitely showed off what the lens can add to a portfolio. I'm getting this as I've been doing a lot more street architecture type shooting often at night. It's nice of samyang to share this little gem with so many different mounts, I'll be using this with a6400.
Last summer, I used the Samyang 12mm f2 with my X-T20 to shoot milky way. It was my first attempt to shoot night sky. The result was great. SOOOOOOO HAPPY !
Love this lens so much, I bought one for Sony E and another Fuji X. Manual focusing on this one is almost impossible to mess up if you're using it for landscape/city shots. At such a wide angle, almost everything is in focus from about 3 feet in front of you to infinity.
I'm a little hesitant to get a manual lens, but I just realized that I may be getting lazy with auto focus. I want something small, wide, prime yet affordable for travel soooo, this one's it. I agree when you said that some photos are half done and the camera doesn't do all the job because when I browse at old photos that didn't seem interesting to me transforms into something amazing upon post process, it becomes something creative than just taking amazing one shot photos.
I loved that lens while I had it! Perfect for travel, since its so wide it just was a back up when I needed wide angle shots. Manual focus was easy. I ended up selling it for extra cash, and miss it. Also good for astro photography.
Go to the mount adapter setting on your XT20, select option 5 or option 6 and set the focal length to 12mm. Then exit out. It's a table of six lens focal lengths that was there to work with the Fuji M-Mount adapter. The first four positions are fixed but position 5 and 6 can be customized. You will now see 12mm in the Exif but f1 will always show when you use any manual lens.
I'm a little hesitant to get a manual lens, but I just realized that I may be getting lazy with auto focus. I want something small, wide, prime yet affordable for travel soooo, thanks to you!
When I was looking for a lens wider than 16mm, I ordered a 12mm Rokinon and a 12mm Zeiss. My original intent was to keep the one I liked the best. I kept them both. I use the 12mm f/2 manual focus Rokinon in my fast prime kit with my 16mm f/1.4, 23mm f/1.4, 56mm f/1.2, and adapted 135mm f/2 Zeiss lenses. I use the 12mm f/2.8 auto focus Zeiss in my zoom kit with my 16-55mm f/2.8 and 50-140mm f/2.8 lenses.
Benjamin Freddie it's legit as far as the diameter of the lens opening goes. In a very non scientific test my X-T20 gave the same shutter speed at f/0.95 with the Mitakon as it did with the 16/1.4. That was with evaluative metering though. The vignetting might be the cause of that. Gotta try the the same experiment with spot metering in the center. But beside being a good low light lens, it's a lens with amazing character and beautiful bokeh.
i just got back from a short trick to Australia, took my 18-55 and 55-200 plus some new primes I bought lately he 12mm Samyang, plus 56mm F1.2 and 23mm F1.4. I used mostly the 23mm F1.4 and the 12mm. They were awesome. the 55-200 was fab for a wildlife sanctuary I visited. The 56mm I didn't use much, just not too much of a walkaround lens but I did get some nice shots of street entertainers. It was the first time I had really used the primes so I was using them more than the zooms, but it was interesting to see which lenses I used most :)
I bought this lens from your earlier review. It is indeed very sharp. Love what it can do. Been shooting some real estate for my friend and works out very well. However you are right about how wide it is for other purchase. It is too wide unless I have no room to back up. I do have a small issue with the focusing. I use focus peeking on my Sony a6500 as well, between focus almost to infinity and infinity. There is a small focus difference area. The peeking shows completely colored up on the subject, but the image comes out slightly blurry. Focus to infinity, everything is sharp. I still need to play around with it more. Need to do some focus testing to learn the sweet spot.
I think if I had the cash to spare the 10-24 would hands down be my go to lens for walking around. How is the autofocus on the 10-24 for you? Maybe I'll sell some stuff to get it
Just bought one of these for my Sony A7RV and while it's a really nice lens, the focus ring is ridiculously stiff! There's no way to turn it with one finger, you have to use 2 fingers and use a little bit of strength. Great image quality though and I'm glad I bought it.
If Rokinon watches, they should give you a kick back. I'm looking on eBay right now. I'm think I'll sell my XC lenses (16-50 & 50-230) and buy a XF 18-135 as my second lens. Mostly woodland and some bigger landscape type shooing...along with my motorcycles.
I bought this last year together with the Fujinon 23mmF2 lens and honestly I have not used the Rokinon that much. I feel the manual focusing is not great. Quality wise it is not great enough to replace the 23mmf2 or even my 18-135 3.5/5.6....I only bought the Rokinon thinking I will use it for night photography only. So far that hasn't happened yet. I might resell it. Honestly I suggest people who travel a lot to consider the 18-135 mm...it is really sharp for a zoom lens and you really can get the most out of it that is in par with the sharper lenses like f2s
Hello -- have learned a lot from your videos. Thank you! I ordered the Rokinon 12mm f2 for my XT20. After mounting the lens, what menu settings or other camera settings do I need to make to get the lens to work?
I had the Rokinon and it was very sharp but I found it difficult to focus in low light as my eyesight isn't great at night. I ended up selling it. Now thinking of either the 10-24 or 16mm f1.4. I do mostly landscape and street. I feel the 16mm would be better for me as it can do more. Love the channel. Love from Scotland.
I’ve probably watched all your Fuji videos, but seems you still haven’t tried the Laowa 9mm F2.8. Or the newer Nisi equivalent. Would be fun to hear your views on those 2.
The samyang/rokinon 12mm is my only non vintage lens because vintage ultra wides suuuuuucckkk for the price. So this is actually my only lens wider than 28mm and it really performs well especially considering the price.
Just came back from a big vacation - lots of architecture - used the Rokinon 12 a lot - much fun - but the viewscreen was often dark and the images are not crisp - lots of trouble with high contrast lighting conditions (interior stained glass windows) - the wide angle is really fun, but the image clarity is very disappointing. Just ordered the Fujifilm 16mm to replace this lens.
Hi Omar. You mentioned that the exif data says 50mm. You probably know this, but for manual lenses, you can set the focal length in the menu. Thanks for your videos, I look forward to the 18-55 travel video :)
Also useful to set the focal length to 12mm so if you’re using auto iso with auto minimum shutter speed it will go down to SS 17 instead of something else that’s not really optimal =)
Omar, What's the type of the battery in your X-T20.How does it work? How many photos can it supports? and do u need a backup?? Really need a battery video! Thank u!!!!!!
Hi Omar, Does the camera photometer work with this lens? Can you shoot in aperture priority (auto speed and iso)? I supose the value of the aperture does not appear in the exif data.... Good video, thanks!!
I tried using it as a walkabout lens in the evening for the extra stop. But, I don't find the f2 that useful at night if you are shooting handheld. I find myself switching back to the 18-55 f2.8 all the time. I can shoot handheld at a lower iso and get cleaner shots because of the OIS on the kit lens. I sacrifice some width, but at least I don't get blurry shots like I do with the samyang.
Hi, i do own a 35mm f2 fuji lens but wanting of getting a new lens. Would you suggest this over to a 23mm f2 fuji lens for street photography and tourist landmarks?
14 mm? Thanks for great video. You did not mention the Fuji 14mm for wide angle. I am seriously considering that lens ( I do need AF) and was wondering if you had any experience with it and your thoughts.
Great vid Omar! Acctually, u are the one who convinced me to get the Samyang 12mm, and I love it. Got it prior to my visit to Prague. Its just awesome for the price. BTW.... do u have review of the 27mm pancake coming? :) Greetings from Sweden :)
Hi, your "low to the water" shot is one of those long-exposure jobbies, but you said you shot it at F2. Curious - did you have an ND filter attached? Or was there really so little light in the scene already?
Hi omar i hope you can answer me should i buy this lense now 2021 or you recommend another option. I am on budget ans i want ultra wide and for astrophotography
Just bought this and it’s the best Astro lens for Fuji. Even beating the 3x more expensive Fuji options according to many people. And as Omar shows it doubles nicely as a landscape/all purpose wide angle if you can nail the manual focus. Hope this helps
@@jacobcarandang8618 no doubt it helps brother. And i bought it and its so amazing. As you said jacob the manual focuse i need to nail to have sharp photos. Thank you jacob.
Hey Omar, just bought an XT3 and a 35mm f2, loving your videos and reviews. Going to Hungary and Czech Republic this year and am taking the 35mm with me. Interested in picking up a wide angle to get some of the beautiful architecture. I’m tossing up between this and the Fuji 16mm f1.4. Bob getting amazing reviews. I also have started dabbling in Astrophotography. Would be interested to know your thoughts.
what an awesome vid, extremely informative. i currently have an m50 looking into a budget lense , but the canon 11-22 puts me at 100 more. what its yout take on it for video. im looking into doing real estate video with it too and also trying to see if i can get creative Broll . any tips?? thanks in advance
David's Focus problem is, then you have to carry an extra body all the time just in case. It’s a bummer when things go bad, but they usually don’t. You do need a 2nd body for sure doing professional gigs though.
Hi Omar huge fan! :D Got the Rokinon... yyes I know its 2 years after your video but yeah... such a low price right now for that glass :D Ok to the point! So was wondering if you maybe tried using this lens for videos? I have xt30 and when I switched to video I could not record anything.... wel actually double checked and all works but am to lazy to delete... well nevertheless enjoy watching your channel. Keep up the good work! CHeers Rob (if you planning to visit Iceland will be more than happy to host you!)
ok - thanks Omar, I am convinced. Bought the 12 mm and put it on my x-20 right at sunsettime. But no, it wouldn‘t shoot I culd not use the release button. I missed the shot of my life.😩 Then I put on the kit lens again, but the release button was still blocked. What‘s the secret?
Went to B&h and Amazon to find this lens and it appears to be a little different than yours. The aluminum base at the mount is wider on yours and theirs has "Samyang" printed on them , not Rokinon. Do you think that it may be the same lens perhaps only upgraded?
james R.maybe that lens was meant for another camera, making the mount somewhat different? Rokinon is just a rebranding for the US market, it is the same lens.
Wide angle is much harder to shoot with a prime you are much better off shooting a zoom for wider than 24mm. Unless you are shooting astro or indoor portraits a prime is just unworkable for most scenarios my Sigma 20mm was very niche!.
Christopher Frost Photography has good review of both lenses. The Samyang 12mm f2 got "Highly Recommended" and the Fujinon 16mm f2.8 "Just about Recommended".
Yeah that's why I couldn't get into the XE3 as well. I take a lot of pictures looking up from below. I guess I could lie on the ground for some real dedication lol
Hello from Hong Kong! I have decided to buy my first camera----the XT 20 soon becoz of you Omar hahahaha Wish me a great photography journey XD. Also, Is the KIT 18-55 good enough for me as a beginner? Thanks and support!
One of my favorite focal lengths tbh. I tried it at the store and it focuses nice and fast. Couldn't afford it and all my other gearlust purchases at the time though.
What are you using for wide angle shots for travel?
Omar Gonzalez Photography I’m off to Paris in 2 days time and this baby is coming with me!
I use Samyang 8mm F2.8 II Fisheye.
the king.... the 16 ... -)
At the moment the XF 18mm 2.0 but, I have a Laowa 9mm on Preorder, you should have a look at that thing, 0 distortion and f/2.8
I love the really chunky, contrasty, rich images that it gives on long exposures at dawn and sunset.
Omar, your joy of photography is contagious
Omar, to fix the lens EXIF go to the Shooting Settings (the little camera icon) and to Mount Adapter Settings. Go down to "Lens 5" and edit it to reflect 12mm. Vacation in national parks and then finish up with a night or two in vegas. Perfect combo. Great video!
Last summer, I used the Samyang 12mm f2 with my X-T20 to shoot milky way. It was my first attempt to shoot night sky. The result was great. SOOOOOOO HAPPY !
I'm glad that the cons you mentioned are about the focal per se and not really of the lens, because I have just bought one second handed for 150 usd.
Omar thank you for all your great Fuji videos, Fuji fans in Dubai
Love this lens so much, I bought one for Sony E and another Fuji X.

Going to buy this lens and take some pictures of cows.
This is my favorite youtube comment of the week
That comment is udderly ridiculous! 🐄😊
That's no way to speak about women
Steaks and stones may break my bones...
Thank you for the information!
Lovely shot at 4.10 when altered, from the mundane to a brilliant photo, as you say a lens is one thing, thinking is another!
I love Omar's videos. 🏆
When I was looking for a lens wider than 16mm, I ordered a 12mm Rokinon and a 12mm Zeiss. My original intent was to keep the one I liked the best. I kept them both.

I use the 12mm f/2.8 auto focus Zeiss in my zoom kit with my 16-55mm f/2.8 and 50-140mm f/2.8 lenses.
This one is on my wishlist. A lens that should be on your wishlist is the Mitakon 35mm f/0.95. You'll love it.
I've seen that one. Is that aperture legit?
Benjamin Freddie it's legit as far as the diameter of the lens opening goes. In a very non scientific test my X-T20 gave the same shutter speed at f/0.95 with the Mitakon as it did with the 16/1.4. That was with evaluative metering though. The vignetting might be the cause of that. Gotta try the the same experiment with spot metering in the center.

This dude is so entertaining, haha, loved it

definitely, that little pine tree worked nicely as a monochrome print....
What monster would dislike this video.. really good shots Omar
“It’s really not such a bad little tree. All it needs is a little love.” Black and white love!
I'm using my 10-24mm f/4, love that thing! Probs my most used lens.
De Pe I have been wanting to pick up the 10-24. I love the super wide look. I bet this lens would also be great for video.
I think if I had the cash to spare the 10-24 would hands down be my go to lens for walking around. How is the autofocus on the 10-24 for you? Maybe I'll sell some stuff to get it

Its a fun lens for APSC, i use my 14mm 2.8 FF on my XT1
Great video ... the Rokinon is high on my list for my next purchase.
There's a new lens from China--The laowa 9mm f2.8. It really good for the price.
More expensive, more vignetting, not as bright, but yeah 9mm without distortion is very interesting. I think both are cool options.
Sacha Martin laowa is also very small. Was never bothered with vignette for stills, but not ideal for video..
If it's anything close in performance to the Sigma 16mm f 1.4 DC DN, it's a great lens. I would love to see Sigma make lenses for Fuji!
Hello -- have learned a lot from your videos. Thank you! I ordered the Rokinon 12mm f2 for my XT20. After mounting the lens, what menu settings or other camera settings do I need to make to get the lens to work?
Stephanie Day there’s a “shoot without lens” setting. Set that to yes. :)
Beautiful photos, Omar!
Love from Scotland.
video on point Omar. really nice intro and b-roll! Love the videos and the lens. Thanks for all of your great work and have an awesome day.
I've just bought one, it's amaaaaazing!! :D
Really nice review.. and great lens .. i will pick one for my xt3
Great video! Love the pictures. That lens is pretty amazing for the price.
I’ve probably watched all your Fuji videos, but seems you still haven’t tried the Laowa 9mm F2.8. Or the newer Nisi equivalent. Would be fun to hear your views on those 2.
ok, your video encourage me to continue use my xt10 and rokinon 12mm more
LOVE my Samyang 12mm, took it to Japan last year and got some great shots, can't wait to hear how you've been liking/hating the 27mm Pancake!
3:50 in color is nicer
I am really enjoying your series. Which Rokinon lens would you use for wedding photography on my Fuji T2?
The samyang/rokinon 12mm is my only non vintage lens because vintage ultra wides suuuuuucckkk for the price. So this is actually my only lens wider than 28mm and it really performs well especially considering the price.
What software do you use for your raw files?🙂
Didn't know that! Thanks!
Where is that?
Second page within the "Shooting Settings" menu - Mount Adapter Setting
Also useful to set the focal length to 12mm so if you’re using auto iso with auto minimum shutter speed it will go down to SS 17 instead of something else that’s not really optimal =)
i was gona tell you that. in fact you can do 3 lenses i think so....get 2 more Roks :D p.s. the 56 is only for weddings :P
hello is it a good combo xt-30 + this rokinon 12 for real estate photos?
Did you have to use an ND filter at 6:38?
I LOVE this lens too. Just did a review on it. I've been using it a lot for street photography and also for some fun video work on gimbal.
Great video. Thanks to your reviews I just purchased this lens :) Going to spend the day with it tomorrow around the Shuswap B.C area.
Omar please prepare a tutorial video of astro photography using this lens... :)
Hey, Omar are all your shots you took handheld or were some shot on the tripod? Thanks
myrk98466 all handheld except for the night or slow shutter ones
Did you use an ND filter for the water shot?
What about using a the 12mm for the canon and use a speedboster to even give you the option to go wider?
Great lens for real estate photography!
Cool. How many Fuji bodies do you travel with?
Great vid Omar! Acctually, u are the one who convinced me to get the Samyang 12mm, and I love it. Got it prior to my visit to Prague. Its just awesome for the price. BTW.... do u have review of the 27mm pancake coming? :) Greetings from Sweden :)
Had my one for three years now, it's a keeper ...thanks for confirming that though :-) Your photos are great.
Lol the office space reference was gold
Hi, your "low to the water" shot is one of those long-exposure jobbies, but you said you shot it at F2. Curious - did you have an ND filter attached? Or was there really so little light in the scene already?
I think i did! Sorry didn't mention.
Ha I wasn’t paying attention then watched again and you specifically mentioned Prague! May pull the trigger on this and save a few hundred
what an awesome vid, extremely informative. i currently have an m50 looking into a budget lense , but the canon 11-22 puts me at 100 more. what its yout take on it for video. im looking into doing real estate video with it too and also trying to see if i can get creative Broll . any tips??
thanks in advance
How does this do for interior photography?
Looks like a place I need to visit with my xt2 and the Rokinon 12mm. Great video! Did you take 2 camera bodies or just the xt20?
David's Focus hi David. Check out Omar’s death of the xt20. He only took one body…and has a story to tell because of it.
Harold Bernard thanks Harold... Ouch! That would not be much fun, I would probably take a second body.
There is a shoot without lens setting.
Unless you are shooting astro or indoor portraits a prime is just unworkable for most scenarios my Sigma 20mm was very niche!.
very nice promo, you made me think to pull the trigger on this one, thank you!
love your videos keep it up!
Prague mentioned?! Cool! Ahoj!!
Can you make a rokinon 12mm f2 vs xf 16mm f2.8 please. I'm torn between which one to get.
Christopher Frost Photography has good review of both lenses. The Samyang 12mm f2 got "Highly Recommended" and the Fujinon 16mm f2.8 "Just about Recommended".
It's certainly the 12 inches behind the camera that makes the difference
Hey Omar what is the name of the tripod you show @6:34 i want to get one
Gorrilapod
what music did you use in the video?
Very good job. Thanks.
It is not a screensaver, it is a wallpaper 😁
Great review, thanks.
just now I see this video, and my manual focus skills suck lol, although I love the look maybe in the future I'll invest in an auto focus lens
The glass sculptures are Chihuly! :D
14 ft legs🤣 that's the way I'm explaining things when I'm using this lens and need people to move toward the center
Love your videos! Thank you for share!
Really like this lens. Unfortunately with x pro 2 it is not that easy to take picture from below.
Yeah that's why I couldn't get into the XE3 as well. I take a lot of pictures looking up from below. I guess I could lie on the ground for some real dedication lol
I had this lense for sony and hated it. When i zoom the picture the details arent very good. Like that it is very wide though
The raw file of the landscape looks a lot better than the edited one. hahaha
amazing i was on a long debate whether getting this or the sigma 16mm f1.4 for my *ahemsonya6500. sigma won by the larger Fstop and AF.
I bought one too because of your review haha. Thanks bro
Great review
Hello from Hong Kong! I have decided to buy my first camera----the XT 20 soon becoz of you Omar hahahaha Wish me a great photography journey XD. Also, Is the KIT 18-55 good enough for me as a beginner? Thanks and support!
I love the 18-55 kit lens. Probably one of the best kit lenses out there.
What do you (or anyone you know) think of the 23mm f2?
One of my favorite focal lengths tbh. I tried it at the store and it focuses nice and fast. Couldn't afford it and all my other gearlust purchases at the time though.
