Whether or not they are expanding on the original season with new characters and Pokemon, or they are retelling the story with just new characters, we don't know. They have not even confirmed the appearance of Brock and Misty in this film yet.
the new characters are technically Brock and Misty in Japan in the anime style that's how the animated in Japan
I think it's alternate universe. They introduced us to that when they did Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby to explain why the first Sapphire and Ruby didn't have the z-ring (Delta Episode). I'm interested in the movie. And want a Marshadow.
the reason why they didnt change artstyle in this movie to sm one
because they knew that SM art style was a mistake and they cant back to original one only till SM season is finshed
so they will switch back to xy art style in next gen

I think the reason why we were all perplexed when we saw the new characters and gen IV and VII Pokemon is because we tried to make heads or tails of it being related to the original canon. I believe this is in fact a retelling set in the universe if the game where Ash exists and is either mentored or assisted on his journey by a much older Red, or maybe an ancestor of Red. we do know that Ash and Pikachu are seen in a photo in Sun and Moon. This film is another way of having it all come together.
Gabriel Ramirez or maybe this is after sun and moon, and the clips of him from the first ep are flashbacks. Just my thoughts . . .

I doubt it will have anything to do with the games.
It's just a standalone movie to comemorate the 20 years of the anime, people read too much into these things.

When I first saw him I thought he Mr. Goodshow. The old man organizes the Pokemon League Tournaments in the anime.
He's also got a big beard and wears a baseball cap.

maybe some trainers in sun and moon travel to kanto so thats why there are alola pokemons😁
I swear for the love of god the pokemon company wants me to go full rage mode and walk into their office and give them each a sky uppercut. Not having misty and brock traveling with ash is one thing, which i can handle but would rather not, but they really need to change the structure of the show cuz i cant take ash going to another region and accomplishing nothing again.

Personally, I actually think the film is going to have to do with alternate timelines or something like that. I don't know why, I have no evidence for such reasoning, I just think that.
I think the movie is completely standalone, it's a celebration of the 20 years of the anime but without being connected to its story. So none of Ash's companions appear, which is good. If they picked just Misty and Brock it would just make every discussion about this movie extremely poisonous and you people know it.
Not to mention there isn't really much to do with them as characters that hasn't been done in the literally hundreds of episodes they were Ash's companions. It would be just nostalgia pandering for the sake of nostalgia pandering, and I'm pleased to see the movie isn't going to be just that.
It's an anniversary movie, there's space for nostalgia, but it really shouldn't be just nostalgia fap material for people who refuse to accept newer generations.

johnfranklin87 They have! The episode Lights, Camerupt, Action featured a movie based on the Pocket Monsters manga (the "scary Clefairy" one).
BJGvideos that was cool and all but I mean the things that actually separate the manga from the anime, not just names and stuff but actual content. I don't wanna say too much cause it could be considered spoilers so if anyone wants know what I'm talking about I highly recommend reading the original manga. It's insane!
johnfranklin87 The original manga? You mean the 4 panel gag comics? Those are pretty wild but I don't know why someone would want to see them animated.
I mean I'm figuring you're talking about Special but that's not the first (or the longest running, though it does have the most volumes), and I don't get why everyone wants to see IT animated either. The ones I want to see are Magical Pokémon Journey (a cute slice of life series) and How I Became A Pokémon Card (that is, if they could figure out the logistics of the rights to the card game, or how to drop that aspect entirely. It's short stories based around some of the images on the carda, done by their artist Kagemaru Himeno). Those would offer something new and fresh that the franchise sorely needs.

Watches a japanese trailer and doesn't know what's going on. Probably would be better if you watched the english dub trailer, but by now, you probably have seen the movie. But yeah, your confusion of the film is adorkable. :)
What's funny is that they hyped everyone about it in the first trailer but just to find out in the second trailer that Brock and Misty are most likely not in this new movie 😂
Honestly I'm far more interested in this movie now that it appears to be its own thing rather than just a retelling of the Original Season.
Especially since it's looking pretty cool so far.
