On March 6th, 2020, CWO-4 (ret.) Williams visited with Sailors and crew aboard USNS Hershel "Woody" Williams. He spoke to them briefly before touring the ship with family and friends.

Yesterday, 29 June 2022, CWO4 Hershel 'Woody' Williams, USMC ret.] passed away at the age 98 years and 8 months.
He was the last living Medal of Honor recipient from World War Two.
Before he died, he watched his great-grandson graduate Marine Corps Boot Camp, Parris Island SC.
Semper Fi, Marine.

The last CMOH recipient of the Greatest Generation. This country will never be the same. Rest in Peace Marine.

A absolute true hero. I believe he used a flame thrower on Iwo jima. That was an incredible dangerous job since on bullet and you were toast. RIP to an incredible American hero.
