In the service of the V.O.C, he founded Fort "De Goede Hoop" and Fort " Duijnhoop", the first Dutch settlements at the Cape of Good Hope. Van Riebeeck and his 90 settlers (including eight women) laid out gardens to grow fruit and vegetables for the crew of the V.O.C ships that usually visited the colony for a few weeks. South Africa went to sh_t when Rhodes and his posse took over the Cape. If it wasn't for his imperialistic policy, South Africa would've been a lot more peaceful. Where Blacks would've had all the amenities of the modern world, alongside the Boers. Rhodes is the one who started the wars with the Boer, and later, his posse, forcibly integrated those EXTREMELY conservative people, with the formerly liberal Cape. It is on that fateful year: 1910, that South Africa became destined to become the most toxic place this side of Africa. You had the Afrikaners, who had pure hatred for Black people, and a resentment towards anything British, become a dominant political population who eventually took out the less-conservative, anti-nationalist _"South African Party"_ , and replaced it with their Afrikaner-nationalist sh_t that brought so much pain and suffering to innocent human beings. I read about _"John Charles Molteno"_ , an Italo-British man, former governor of the Cape, and a great liberal man, whose policies saw Black people's freedom GUARANTEED in the CONSTITUTION. This saw many Xhosas recieving a good modern education, including the first ever acquisition of a degree by a Black woman in the entire Africa. The legacy of this were all the Xhosas that were leaders in the first ever opposition, to the coming oppression. Which eventually led to Mandela. (But that's just our timeline). I can only imagine how life would've been if the British government had decided to allow the Cape to become a federation instead be in union with South Africa, or become an independent republic, or just got rid of Rhodes entirely. We would have a _MUCH_ more educated, well-adapted Black population, that would've gotten the same education that every White person was getting in the Cape and the Boer republics. We would've had Black people that were less radical, and as conservative as a White _"Boomer"_ is today. We would've had a lot more peace, a lot less racism, and this side of Africa would've been the most industrialised, and the most-economically powerful UNDISPUTEDLY! Not once have I heard the name of Jan van Riebeeck. As a representative of the V.O.C. ( East Indian Company), he was the one who saw the possibilities of Cape Town.
He didn’t actually. He didn’t want to be in the Cape. He wrote to the VOC asking them to let him come back. After a long time, with help from the indigenous populations, they managed to survive. Then the vryburghers started etc. And just btw, vryburghers comprised the odd coloured and black person because the VOC/early settlers couldn’t have managed without them. I hate how people whitewash history.
@@SmilingSoulful Van Riebeeck boarded the ship "De Dromedaris" on December 16, 1651, accompanied by "De Goede Hoop", and "De Reijger", but did not leave until a week later. He had been sent to set up a refreshment station at the Cape of Good Hope. On April 6, 1652, Van Riebeeck landed at Table Bay. A hedge of almond trees was added to keep stray livestock out of the gardens.
Van Riebeeck remained commander of the modest fort until May 7, 1662. After that, he was succeeded by Zacharias Wagener. He arrived in Batavia on 5 July. Van Riebeeck was governor of Dutch Malacca from October 1662 to October 1665 and buried his wife there, who had died of smallpox on November 2, 1664, and several children. Balthasar Bort became his successor. In Batavia, he became secretary of the High Government of the Indies. He remarried the widow Maria Scipio in 1667. wow ...what has the ANC DONE
A lot
If only the Boer weren't such hateful people. If only!

Give me a minute while my eyes adjust from overexposure to all the bright white light... I understand this video as a valuable artifact of SA history, window into the past and source material for building social commentary/debate, but I am still astounded at the amount of bias and misinformation contained in this video. It is either pure propaganda designed to hoodwink the world into thinking what a paradise SA was/is, or alternatively, the author and endorsers actually believed the narrative they were portraying. Or a bit of both. Not sure which is worse. Needless to say, it was not paradise the vast majority of SA.
Well said Andreas! It gets me when people bang on about the good old days and good for who unless you were white. They also go on about how it looked so clean and nice back then as well. Most of Cape Town and the Western Cape is still just as clean and stunning to this day.
Now the filthy Cape of evil
It's still wonderful to me.
Good old days!
Fuckin shithole of note now...
Wait, but South Africa didn’t have TV until 1976......

100% BOER racism and wildly inaccurate statements are never the answer. And once again please make use of punctuation. You don't like it in South Africa then move to another country. It's literally that easy.

Was this a propaganda video promoting racist apartheid goverment? I dont see them showing life in township in langa and gugulethu where they kept blacks and also mitchells plain and cape flats? It would have been nice if the show life of all south africans not just minority
Probably would have still been better than it is now..government has failed us.
@Jeremiah Morley i was not allowed by law to make such a video in that place. You do know that this is a 1960 video. Durr
@FOMO FUD what democracy? When 90% of the population were by prevented from voting, who can that be called democracy?
@FOMO FUD i know about that about that farce.. That had nothing to do 90 %of the population of the country as they never even participated in it. Also wht other choice could they have voted for. Country was broke. Sanctions killed the economy. Debt was way to high. Black majority was woke demanding their freedom. Libaration moverments were being unbanned. And western backers of old regim saw it was no longer sustainable to support such illigitimate goverment. That was a real farce i tell you. People that could be credited for fighting for democracy are those who while they were afforded privilages on the bases of colour as early as 40s , 50s and 60s sacrificed all of that and took out the fight for non segregation. A lot of them spoke the truth to power when it was not fashionable to do so. They went to jail. Exile and some had it bad. Those are people we will forever praise.
@FOMO FUD look even if they had voted no. It would not have changed anything. The wheels of our revolution were not turning back. Dont get me wrong. As you say it was your first vote , i respect you as well for what you did. The problem with people still having hatred is really what you see in social media. You have racist openly praising good old apartheid south africa. These so called keyboard warriors spread fake information. Critical of anything new south african with their false claim of genocides. With false notion that some foreign goverment will come and rescue them.. they fail to account and be honest of what really happened in this country. Sometimes we ask why did we not have nuremburg type of trials after end of apartheid as it happened in nazi germany. Maybe we would not have such blantant racisim promoted everyday. Be that as it may i hear your point now.
the bad old days..
Before Bantu Colonisation began in the 80s
These old videos always show the beautiful side of apartheid South Africa. I’m yet to see one that shows both sides. I mean, the army killing black people for being black in townships.
