Just say "I haven't passed yet." Don't take it as a failure but see it as a learning opportunity. There is a lot of power in "Yet", you are telling yourself that you will get there and that your eyes and heart are still fixed on your goal.
I took the step 1 last month. I'm very disappointed, the exam is not even close to the practice material that the prep book sells online. The level of difficulty is like 5x or 6x.
The most sensible advice I’ve come across on UA-cam. Wish I’d seen this earlier. Too many people insist to go about UWorld “all subject all systems” but that’s meaningless without consolidation.

This was SUCH good advice. I am a Caribbean student and have completed my basic sciences and am in the process of studying for step 1. I wish I heard this earlier and was able to realize what useful advice this is. For anybody confused over all of the resources available and hearing everybody's advice- look no further. This is the best step 1 preparation video I’v seen !! I have been doing 1-2 sketchy micro videos everyday like you said around 20 mins everyday, & it has helped me immensely !! P.s. Finally Ive found an IMGs making videos! Nice video, very organized and congrats for having this predisposition. Dr, in your experience what are the self assessments ( online quizes ) that can really guide a person to know about the range of the score they are?
You have 2 main types of online assessment tests. These are your NBMEs and your UWSAs. However due to the limited quantity, you should be cautious on doing your NBMEs prematurely. The most predictive tests are said to be NBME 18, 21 and the 2 UWSA tests, however this may not always be the case. I suggest waiting till the last month of prep to do these predictive tests. When you do start your NBMEs though, start with the oldest ones. They may be relatively less predictive, however, its good enough to start off with.

Finally a video about preparation from an IMG's perspective. Thank you so much for this video and channel. I would like to ask a question regarding the question bank. Ofcourse the gold standard is Uworld but I have heard many people (US grads) saying that Uworld should be left for dedicated period. So would you suggest starting off with some other question bank such as Amboss during consolidation stage and then coming to Uworld during revision stage?
That's a great question! I just want to say that this is a completely different ball game for U.S grads compared to IMGs. U.S grads take 8-12 weeks to study for this exam. This is mainly because their entire medical school curriculum surrounds these books and so they are definitely more ahead in terms of preparation. This is not to say that IMGs have less knowledge, it is just that our curriculum doesn't support Usmle preparation. This is why most IMGs prepare for Usmle after their medical school. When it comes to usmle, 60% of the information is in FA whereas the other 40% of the information is from Uworld. So its definitely important for you to start learning Uworld as soon as possible. I don't think you should use Amboss as a learning tool. It has way to much outlier & non-high yield information tat its not worth it to learn from it. Instead, use it to practice question strategy. You'll only know 60-70% of the information when you take your USMLEs. Its upto you to use the questions banks and train yourself to make educated guesses and use common sense, to bridge the gap. With the knowledge you attain from 2 rounds of Uworld, you can use Amboss to practice question strategy.

Thank you! This is a very commonly asked question. Anatomy is a tricky subject to study for. However, although they might ask direct anatomy questions, this is very rare. Most anatomy questions are related to pathophysiology and you’ll cover most of what you need during your preparation time. Towards the second half of your prep, I do recommend anatomy shelf notes. It takes one day to read and cover a lot of information. To answer your second question, I’d recommend boards and beyond with your limited time, because it’s shorter, organized system-wise and it complements first aid!
Hey! How'd you compare Kaplan vs BnB for someone's who's still building basic concepts and has enough time on them. I've been watching Kaplan for some subjects like Pharm/Behavioural and I think it's been a good journey. However, I've read much more comments on the internet in favour of BnB. Is it a high yield thing for the dedicated study period or should I switch to BnB? Btw, Congrats on the match! :)
Thats a great question! Before telling you the differences, I think both are really good resources with enough content for you to understand First Aid completely. Both have different pros :- Boards and Beyond: - BnB is organized according to systems, so it is easier to follow First aid along with it -BnB is more concise and provides the right amount of extra information, so if you're battling against time, this would definitely be better Kaplan: - - Kaplan is a little bit longer but covers alot more concepts surrounding the high yield concepts. So you definitely get a better understanding with Kaplan, however it comes with investing more time. Comparing the two, id use boards and beyond and use Kaplan for specific weak topics. However I think Kaplan is the best for biochem, pharm, neuroanatomy and immunology My next few videos should cover this more in detail however that's the general gist of the difference! Good luck!

It’s definitely possible. I know many IMGs who’s matched into internal medicine and then attained a fellowship in Rheumatology. I agree that it’s a long path, but the end goal makes it all worth it :)

True! Doing uworld the first time with "all" filter is just bulllshit. We need to learn system-wise first! and mainly annotate them lesson wise!!

Finally Ive found an IMGs making videos! Nice video, very organized and congrats for having this predisposition. Dr, in your experience what are the self assessments ( online quizes ) that can really guide a person to know about the range of the score they are?
You have 2 main types of online assessment tests. These are your NBMEs and your UWSAs. However due to the limited quantity, you should be cautious on doing your NBMEs prematurely. The most predictive tests are said to be NBME 18, 21 and the 2 UWSA tests, however this may not always be the case. I suggest waiting till the last month of prep to do these predictive tests. When you do start your NBMEs though, start with the oldest ones. They may be relatively less predictive, however, its good enough to start off with.

Love this. Using RX 360 videos vs kaplan for concepts. They do a pretty good job I think.
Finally a video about preparation from an IMG's perspective. Thank you so much for this video and channel.
I would like to ask a question regarding the question bank. Ofcourse the gold standard is Uworld but I have heard many people (US grads) saying that Uworld should be left for dedicated period. So would you suggest starting off with some other question bank such as Amboss during consolidation stage and then coming to Uworld during revision stage?
That's a great question!
I just want to say that this is a completely different ball game for U.S grads compared to IMGs. U.S grads take 8-12 weeks to study for this exam. This is mainly because their entire medical school curriculum surrounds these books and so they are definitely more ahead in terms of preparation.
This is not to say that IMGs have less knowledge, it is just that our curriculum doesn't support Usmle preparation. This is why most IMGs prepare for Usmle after their medical school.
When it comes to usmle, 60% of the information is in FA whereas the other 40% of the information is from Uworld. So its definitely important for you to start learning Uworld as soon as possible.
I don't think you should use Amboss as a learning tool. It has way to much outlier & non-high yield information tat its not worth it to learn from it. Instead, use it to practice question strategy. You'll only know 60-70% of the information when you take your USMLEs. Its upto you to use the questions banks and train yourself to make educated guesses and use common sense, to bridge the gap. With the knowledge you attain from 2 rounds of Uworld, you can use Amboss to practice question strategy.

I failed my USMLE Step 1 exam 2 times first was 2012 second was 2018 and I lost money on review questions and also wasted a lot of time studying which never helped me .

Thank you! This is a very commonly asked question. Anatomy is a tricky subject to study for. However, although they might ask direct anatomy questions, this is very rare. Most anatomy questions are related to pathophysiology and you’ll cover most of what you need during your preparation time. Towards the second half of your prep, I do recommend anatomy shelf notes. It takes one day to read and cover a lot of information. To answer your second question, I’d recommend boards and beyond with your limited time, because it’s shorter, organized system-wise and it complements first aid!

Hey! How'd you compare Kaplan vs BnB for someone's who's still building basic concepts and has enough time on them.
I've been watching Kaplan for some subjects like Pharm/Behavioural and I think it's been a good journey.
However, I've read much more comments on the internet in favour of BnB. Is it a high yield thing for the dedicated study period or should I switch to BnB?

Thats a great question! Before telling you the differences, I think both are really good resources with enough content for you to understand First Aid completely. Both have different pros :-
Boards and Beyond:
- BnB is organized according to systems, so it is easier to follow First aid along with it
-BnB is more concise and provides the right amount of extra information, so if you're battling against time, this would definitely be better
Kaplan: -
- Kaplan is a little bit longer but covers alot more concepts surrounding the high yield concepts. So you definitely get a better understanding with Kaplan, however it comes with investing more time.
Comparing the two, id use boards and beyond and use Kaplan for specific weak topics. However I think Kaplan is the best for biochem, pharm, neuroanatomy and immunology

I also want to match on IM, then search for a fellowship in rheumatology. Looks so hard, anyways ive always looked up to indian imgs, lets hope for the best (mexican img)
It’s definitely possible. I know many IMGs who’s matched into internal medicine and then attained a fellowship in Rheumatology. I agree that it’s a long path, but the end goal makes it all worth it :)
