I finally got these pickups installed on my own Mini Precision and they sound awesome! They sound so much clearer and deep than the stock pickups, and also these things are the most ergonomic pickups I ever had.
I just got this bass. As primarily a guitar player, this bass is so much easier to play than my full size Fender Jazz V bass. I’m amazed at the difference. Now I need to get those Dimarzio’s!
I bought a cheap glarry bass just so I would have one to record with. ( im primarily a guitarist) it could seriously use a pickup upgrade. Might try these out.
Great Bass Playing (by the way!) So, after watching your video, I picked up one of these for practically nothing. Next, I dropped in a Quarter Pounder (insead of the Relentless), a pre-wired american pots/switch/cap/plug assembly (I'm not great at soldering), added a Hipshot KA bridge, and a set of "drop-in" GOTOH tuners. Then I had the frets/neck professionally setup . Finally I topped it off with a set of Rotosound Jazz 77 short Flat-wounds. Thanks again for the idea! Tim
I like them purely for the metal covers. Usually, your only choices for p/j pickups are black or white, which can be limiting if you're in an artsy mood. So it's nice to see a manufacturer try something different.
Very nice brother, nicer Billy Sheehan commented on Facebook about the video, it's where I heard about. I just may get these for my P bass !! Rock on !!
I love my Squier Mini P. I have owned a tone of full scale and short scale basses since 1987, and the mini P sounds better than most. Even with stock pickups. I am going to put a thumb rest rail on mine using the top two pickguard holes nearest he neck joint though.
Glad you got a good service from Showtime. That's one of the two music stores in my area of WV. The other store (A Plus Guitars) just had an interaction with the person from Gamechanger Audio. Cool that two people I follow found and had good experiences with our area stores.
Upgraded cheap guitars with great pickups... I was a union stagehand on the Las Vegas Strip about 16 years ago... worked on a a setup at the Paris convention hall for a fertilizer convention finale dinner... backstage I saw a bunch of road cases with sixties stickers plastered all over and some old dudes with BenFranklin style long grey hair... I was helping set up setting up the stage... and it was Crosby Stills & Nash! Apparently I was the only person that could figure out how to set up the Dumble & a few effect pedals. I asked their stage manager about their guitars... Squires with Lindy Fralin pickups!
I bought an Ibanez SRMD200 Mezzo 32” scale bass. Just like Billy said… the edges and corners of these inexpensive P pickups were sharp and hard. Every time I slapped the E string, the corners stabbed into the fleshy part of my palm, below my thumb. It hurt and drove me crazy. Eventually, I pulled out a file rounded the edges and corner. Billy, thanks for improving design of the 50-year-old P bass pickup. I’m sure Leo Fender would approve.
LOL, absolutely time for an up date. I invented the first P Bass replacement in the mid 70's. I gave it more output, made it in Cream and added adjustable pole pieces. The new Relentless modernized and cleans up the design. Keep in mind that Leo never intended to have the pickup exposed, it had a metal cover plate. I put one in my custom Warmoth. Best, hottest, passive split coil I've ever used hands down. Yes, they need to make a similar coated and rounded j bass pickup similar chock full of magnets.
It's interesting how the vast majority of players down play an instrument if it costs less,... even when you add good sounding pickups (the heart of electric guitars),... the consensus is usually: "Great sound,...kind of sort of",... when in fact most players couldn't tell the difference in a blind fold test. Also,... I have never heard Phil play bass so I was pleasantly surprised! I have a "Green Dean" P-bass I might try these P-ups on,... could be a cool change. Thanks for turning us on to these!
This just popped up on my you tube and because of it I bought a Mini pbass and the Relentless pickups. My question to you was there any issues wiring these up. I probably fall into the 15 or so minutes not the 5 that it took you. Thank you love your channel.
Philip, thanks for this video! I'm a bit late seeing it, but it's brought me some new information that will do me good. For one thing, I bought my first short-scale bass late last year and have been wondering if I made a good choice. Well, this New Year's weekend, I have learned about several short-scale basses with identical or nearly identical specs. The Squier Mini P-bass is one such. I actually like my Ibanez MiKro bass better than I would the Mini as my MiKro has a P+J pickup configuration (with the split coils reversed in position - treble side closer to the neck than the bass side). I'm just now returning to guitarist/bassist thing, and I really needed a bass that's easy to play. I have yet to think of modifications for either of my basses and doubt if my abilities are great enough to justify any, but that DiMarzio pickup is very tempting. I, too, would be interested in a J-bass style pickup done with the rethinking of Sheehan's P-bass pickup. I might get a full set, and even if I don't, I'm sure that there are many players who would. Larry DiMarzio, are you listening? Money to be made here!💲‼️
Hey Phillip! Bought a Harley Benton short scale a while ago with the purpose of experimenting on it, and damn that was a fun project! Made it fretless with some wood sheets filling the gaps, changed the pickups and the bridge (which are actually way more expensive than the whole new bass lol). Can confirm that short basses (never played a mini bass tho, that thing really intrigues me) are a magnet for this kind of things, they're just screaming for it! 😂
Oh wow Phil I didn't realize you were primarily a bassist. That lick in the first 2 minutes was a shock. What would you think about maybe throwing a set of these pickups in a Jackson Minion mini bass? And if you did, since that model has a Jbass bridge bar, what would you pair with them?
The tone out of those pickups is amazing. I've been casually looking for a P bass for a while. I'm kinda holding out to see if Fender re-releases a road worn P bass, or for the right medium scale MIJ to become available. After watching this video, I went straight to Reverb.. luckily, I didn't find anything that for what I was looking for.
I'm gonna have to pick a mini p bass up just for looping purposes. Although I never played a bass before. I'd like to try and learn though.. nothing beats a good funky bass line
Hey Phil couple questions. 1. How much does the shorter scale length affect the intonation? 2. How thick is the neck? I've been wanting a short scale bass since I have small hands and I wanted to pull the trigger on this but I'm very unsure about those 2 things.
Argh! I tried installing these pickups myself into a P bass and couldn’t figure out the wiring…the stock pickups have just one wire each, but these DiMarzios have three wires. I’ve never installed pickups on anything before, so this stumped me, and I don’t wanna eff anything up. 😭😭😭
Used Dimarzios with my stock pbasses occasionally and it always worked out so I'm not surprized. Will check these pups out. But this mini bass was floppy, It just didn't feel solid when I played it, it was more like a bronco. As soon as you dig in it's wtf land. I'm in the market for a new mid-priced shortie; maybe the G&L Tribute or Sterling .
And that's why I don't like P-Bass pickups and prefer soapbars, since they do everything that this P-Bass pickup does. I think that these are a nice innovation for those that really like P-bass pickups, but I've just been able to do this with soapbar-type pickups, which do much the same thing.
Is there a big difference between this model of the Sheehan pickup and the other with exposed pole pieces? Those are listed as P bass pickups and the ones with no pole pieces are listed as “middle pickups”.
I kinda forget you’re a bassist first. Chops are unreal.
Right?
Indeed, he should play more often.
Billy himself brought me here!
Me too nice shoutout 👍🏻
I knew you played bass but I never knew you could play a bass like that
Plays bass like a boss!
I always forget you are a bass player with an obsession for guitars
Billy Sheehan is a monster player and absolutely knows what he wants in his gear. love how simple, yet clever this innovation is.
Short scales are rad as hell. My main bass is a PJ Mustang
I love my viola bass short scale
My wife has 9 bass guitars....always plays her Mustang.
I agree, I have about 20 Basses and some of my favorites are my Mustangs and broncos.
@@juneau.bandca would have thought it was an RD Artist my guy
Is there a noticeable difference in sound compared to a normal scaled bass ?
The tone and look of these is off the chain, off the charts, off the rails. Too cool.

Thumbs up for no other reason than Phil’s funky slaps.
I just mad it took this long to get poleless stainless steel pickup covers on a P-bass pickup lol
