Folks have this romantic idea of living in the countryside. Its fine while you are young and have a car. Once needing services such as doctor, dentist, schools, library, hardware shop, etc. Once you dont have a car - you are scuppered! The Foodbank I volunteer for delivers to some very lonely older ill people who moved into romantic villages when they were fit and able in their late 50s and 60s. Dont do it, folks! Like Vivi - plan for increasing lack of mobility. I bought a courtyard garden, within ( currently) walking distance of the supermarket, doctors, library etc. When i get older still taxis to such places will be not too expensive. Currently i am so blessed - a half hour walk and I am by the sea! Vivi is really thinking this through. 😎

Very elucidating vid, Vivi. Was Charlotte Brontë an Irish Wolfie? I can picture you with one!
My boy is a Portuguese Water Dog (Portie). He’s in his final months. I thought I could muster Army nurse stoicism faced with his demise after nearly 15 yrs companionship. No way. I’m a sentimental mess, loving him more & more each day and frightened to death at the thought of his absence. Tears (I’ve needed a cathartic flood) as I write…. I don’t know yet if I’ll open my heart to another dog…a warm beating heart at the footboard, a welcome every time you come home. Probably. In time. They are the most incredible creatures. The best thing humans ever did…domesticating dogs. ❤to all the 🐾🐕‍🦺lovers out there.

I live in a bungalow in a very small city, about 10 minutes walk from the centre and it’s perfect - if I walk in the other three directions, I am more or less in the countryside and about an hours walk from the sea.
I can’t drive but I think it would make a big difference, but I don’t have good enough eyesight.
I grow flowers in pots out front, but the back is tiny and there’s just enough room for the bins.

Hi Vivi, both my children were bought up in a small Dorset village. They enjoyed the lifestyle and freedoms as children out and about with friends and riding their ponies. As soon as as they left home for uni, they headed for the biggest cities they could and that suited them both for uni and subsequent work opportunities. I think you are very sensible to want to live within reach of services and help should you need it. Here’s to a lovely ground floor flat with a garden and some new knees. It’s exciting to think of all the changes and challenges ahead. Take care Vivi. Xxx

I'm a couple of days late watching thanks to shift work. You are absolutely making the right move looking for a ground floor flat (or maybe in a block of flats if it comes with a lift and a decent balcony for a small garden?). I've grown veges in pots on my door steps in many rentals with no garden space. Spinach and tomatoes were always my two essentials.
None of us know what the future will bring. I have had two significant back injuries, one of them was simply twisting slightly wrong while picking something light up from the floor. With both of them I could not have managed stairs. Hopefully the knees will be the only severe health issue you ever have to face, but life is unpredictable and as we age we don't bounce back as well.
I can't wait to see what your new abode will be and then watch you create a home and hopefully a garden. As you say, it will be a new adventure and I love the way you are embracing the change.

Vivi, I'm vaguely familiar with London architecture from just a few visits, so perhaps my question doesn't make sense. But have you thought about broadening your house search to include newer construction - with a lift? I know you don't have a garden then (a balcony at most), but maybe you'd go back to having an alottement after your knee surgery? Hugs, as usual - you're beautiful in such vibrant colours. Pink for all the girls (and boys!)!!! 💪💕

I live in a village but very close to big towns. There are frequent buses and a station to get further afield. I have had gardens and allotments for 50 years and have recently moved to smaller house with a paved back garden. I’m gradually making it into something attractive.

The fire Service wouldn't approve for us to have a stair lift in our second story flat as we had a neighbour on first floor and they said it would be restrictive. It was just two straight flights of steps and the neighbour didn't mind. So no chance they would approve one for your building

Hi Vivi, I'm one of those that asked you about London smog. I saw them in 1961. We have pretty stringent rules about burning things here in California too. We just had to get rid of our chimney because it was starting to fall down and it would have been horrendously expensive to fix it and then we could hardly use it.

Vivi, I grew up with dogs and owning my own forever home I've now got one. Actually, she's my sixth. I adopt older dogs and the turnover is ... relatively rapid I suppose, but it's worth it every time. There are thousands of dogs that need homes, some of them need masses of exercise, some just want to sleep in the garden, what they all need is a home. The thing that would, I think, kill me is having a dog from a puppy and at some point having to make the one way trip to the vet (or have the vet come here) for the final visit. I can do most things, but I don't think I'd survive that. This way, I know it's going to happen, and all I have to do is make the dog's final years, however many that may be, as happy as possible. When the time comes, and I always know for a couple of months when it's happening, I can prepare myself for it. As soon as it does I start looking for the next dog, because it's the only way I can cope with having to say goodbye. There have been some where saying goodbye hasn't been as heart-breaking as others, but I'd give anything to have Honey Bear and Kelpie back. They were very, very special. There will always be special dogs waiting for someone to give them their forever home.

Sadly, electric bicycles in the UK have to be pedalled all the time; they don’t have handlebar throttles. The battery motor gives a lot of help on hills, but the knees/legs never get much of a rest. Also, country roads are lethal nowadays.

We have a small high set house on 1000m2 garden block (think house set on columns, we are in the dry tropics) So we have 11 steps to get upstairs, but have built a large enclosed patio downstairs we use all the time. No animals any more, so expensive. Good luck with your house hunting!

Last Friday I went out with friends to Hebden Bridge, Kirby Lonsdale , Devils bridge... absoluteley gorgeous drive, however, no real shopping areas... nothing for miles...we lost phone signals a few times in the hills. loads of for sale notices... I know exactly why.... you are right people have this fixed idea of the perception of living in the countryside... It would be a nightmare in Winter. I did the Shirley Valentine, there comes a point where one doesn't have the energy it's really tough going.... Head has to rule the heart.... I think some of the viewers don't get how difficult it is to access NHS these days... I have been waiting since January just for an ASSESSMENT on my hip... let alone being listed for surgery, as for privately.... there just aren't as many surgeons these days, so there is still a considerable wait ... meanwhile back in the real world we become more and more immobile.... If you had a garden big enough, would you put a shed in it?

Hi Vivi. Enjoyed the video. My question is if the first floor switched with you, would you stay at your current place and keep your garden? Have a great day !!

No. There would still be too many stairs......plus, I couldn't afford that flat.

We all love Vivi's cottage in the sky! But we need to respect her decision, which she has explained before and now in even more detail 🙏🤗
It may be stressful for our dear friend to have her plans regularly queried. I consider her sensible and wise, and that her judgement is spot on. And it's her life, her home, and her wellbeing to manage as best she can.
Let's be by and on her side, whatever the future holds 🏠

Who gets the use of the garden in your building now? Also, would you look at a ground floor flat with no garden if it was next to allotments?

    • @WhatVivididnext
      @WhatVivididnext  29 днів тому +1

We don't have a garden here. Hmmmm.......not sure re the last bit.....probably not as I want to plant flowers and trees as well as veggies and that wouldn't be allowed on an allotment.
